7:30pm Sunday
This has been a nice little “welcome back to work” evening for me. I’m sick (who gets sick in June?) after doing a cruise with my family through the western Caribbean the past 7 days. We hardly saw any rain, then I think I found more lightning right over Portland once I get back!
First, we had our hottest day of the year so far…hitting 92 at PDX
Then, as models had hinted…thunderstorms developed over the Cascades and moved down into the eastern/central part of the Willamette Valley. Note the UW WRF-GFS morning run showed the thunderstorms…this is a 24 hour rain total:
The UW-MM5 model showed the same thing but (this really hurts), King ECMWF did not bring showers over us.
But in addition to areas of heavy rain…
A strong surge of wind poured across the metro area as cool air rushed out of the bottom of those storms and spread westward. Peak gusts were very impressive and the line of wind could be seen on the radar reflectivity as well.
At this hour almost 10,000 PGE customers are out of power…rare for thunderstorms in our area. Quite a few broken limbs around the area. 30-40 mph gusts are pretty strong for June!
We remain in a very warm airmass the next 3 days, so high temperatures will still be around 90 (plus or minus a few degrees) through Wednesday. The thunder action should remain over/east of the Cascades tomorrow.

Awesome 🤗🤗🤗🤗🤗
I got a 93F maximum yesterday- quite a scorcher, but the good news is, the winds picked up late last evening and overnight from the ocean, and today’s a lot more pleasant.
NWS has our area “marginally severe”

Since the link won’t work. I will post the pic for you to see.
The “marginal” area is confined to the back side of the Cascades and Central Oregon. Too bad it doesn’t include the Willamette Valley!
Sadly it looks as though models have shoved the big thunderstorm potential off to the East of Portland Metro. The Cascades should get pounded though, and from here we might see a good light show out over the mountains.
I want to say the models are just a representation of what could happen. There is a possibility the bullseye could move to the West more. I will keep an eye on the satellite pictures tomorrow.
Thunderstorms have a mind of their own. Just like Mark said last night, “we can’t forecast were a thunderstorm will develop or what community will be hit by the thunderstorm”. It’s just a wait and see thing for now. We know we will have thunderstorms, we just hope they will hit in our area…hehe. 🙂
It didn’t hit 90 yesterday – woot! Hopefully it won’t today either.
No thunder up this way. 81˚F for a high yesterday and 85˚F today.
I was coming from Clackamas and watching the clouds roll in the whole way home. By the time I got to the Glenn Jackson bridge, the gust front started pushing through and boy did I feel it in my little car! The view of the storm In Clackamas and on the bridge was pretty cool. At on point, another cell was moving past SR500 in Vanc and the velocity on radar hinted towards the beginning of possible rotation. I tried to look for it but never did see any. Saw cloud to cloud lightning once and a few very small hailstones mixed in with massive sized raindrops. Haven’t had time to look at the models this weekend so was just going off of the AFD. Looks like we may have another chance of tstorms today.
Saw the cape for Wed afternoon!
I have, if things don’t change between now and then, I think it could be a very active Wednesday. Maybe some of the thunderstorms could be severe!!!
I don’t see it anymore.
The CAPE for Wednesday still is impressive. This is the look from GFS. I will do the EURO here soon.
This is the EURO. Very impressive if you ask me. At least for the NW.
GFS doesn’t look as good now but the NAM does

With a 20% chance inland for thunder & lightning today, we want to remind everyone, When Thunder Roars, Go Indoors!
I was looking at the models (GFS and EURO) and they both have a good indication that Wednesday and probably Thursday could be interesting too with Thunderstorms. Let’s just hope we get another chance to experience a good thunderstorm 🙂
What’s it looking like for the East side? (Sorry, I don’t have the time to dive into the models right now) I’ll be working out near Hermiston on Wednesday, forecast is (was?) calling for 99 degree sunshine. I don’t really want to get caught in a big storm out there, especially on the site where I’ll be working…
I hope you can see this. This is for Wednesday 6/20/18 on the GFS model. The Euro model kind of looks the same.
lol
Take a close look at Portland.
See The Dome? HAHA!!
Thanks for the page, BTW. That’s a good one, haven’t come across it before.
LOL, I see that too but when we had the thunderstorm yesterday, it really didn’t have a bullseye on the Portland area and we still got hit. If anything, I’m willing to drive to the action…hehehe 🙂
That’s 5pm PDT. I should be just about back home by then. Looks like my path from the Eastern Gorge all the way down into the PDX Metro anti-bullseye is being kept clear for me. Doesn’t that just figure?
Hehe, I think your possessed so you can’t get any good weather…lol. I was looking at the flow on that day, it’s coming from the south to southwest. Normally that’s a good flow to have thunderstorms hit the Portland area. We will know more when Wednesday get’s closer. If the models are correct. We could have thunderstorms Thursday morning (which is a rare thing for us). There was one time I can remember getting thunderstorms in the morning and I believe that was in 2008. I was at work and around 8am we got hammered. I came home and found out my modem was not working. The apartment complex got hit by a surge of power and damaged it. It took a few days to get a new one 😦
August 18, 2008.
I had to walk to work in that. Had 2 strikes come down within about 1,000 feet of me, the second one crackled directly above my head. Unfortunately I just missed catching the lightning on video both times.
I also remember a pretty good outbreak of sunrise thunderstorms in June 1997. I had just graduated high school, and it was in that surreal week between graduation/no more classes, but the underclassmen still had a week of school left. I watched the boomers slide by to the West over the hills/Beaverton about 6am.
It’s rare, but we do get them. We’re overdue.
So cool 🙂 yea, we get them but it’s rare. I just looked at the EURO, it is very impressive for Wednesday afternoon and Thursday morning. Let’s just hope the models keep this up for the next few runs. 🙂
Last Saturday I was at the Coast, and you guys got slammed with thunderstorms all day.
Yesterday I was in far NW Vancouver (Salmon Creek) at my Dad’s celebrating Father’s Day. We completely missed out on everything, didn’t even know there were thunderstorms going on in Portland. It wasn’t until I came home, noticed all the tree debris covering the roads in my neighborhood, found all the damage done to my yard and garden, discovered the power was out and saw the quarter inch of water in my rain gauge that wasn’t there when I left a few hours earlier did I then realize that something had happened. Got the skinny from my neighbors grandson across the street, kid told me about the rain, hail, wind, lightning and thunder that lasted for a good hour.
Not sure, but my garden may have suffered some permanent casualties. It’s too late to replant now. 😢
Driving home at sunset, this was as close as we got to the action.
Is there like a mini-dome surrounding you? Nah, I don’t think so, not after this and last years snowstorms. But sorry you missed it, and sorry for the damage to your garden. The thunderstorms here in India are spectacular, so I’m having a blast.
Ahh, but there is. I’ve been referring to it for years, and it’s a fairly well know phenomenon around here. Thankfully, The Dome hasn’t been keeping as much snow away as it has in the past, but as trade-off it seems the effect on thunderstorms has only grown stronger.
Really, it’s a silly tongue-in-cheek thing, but it sure would seem as though it’s a real thing, right?
Boring Larry in Cove can attest, he grew up in my neighborhood a couple decades before I came along, and is quite familiar with the existence of The Dome.
I wish I would’ve checked the forcast a little closer. We decided to take thr boat out for father’s day. We were enjoying a nice little beach on merwin, and then we noticed the clouds coming over the hillside. We packed up as fast as possible, but not fast enough. We didn’t get to far when the skies opened up. Thank goodness for our Bimini top and extra towels. Nothing like pelting rain while being in swimsuits. It definitely made for an unforgettable father’s day.
Congrats on such a cool storm 🙂
Here in India we have had decently strong thunderstorms for the past few days. Gusty winds, sheets of rain. The first of the four I have seen so far brought thunder and frequent lightning for a good 30-60 mins. Exciting stuff! We might get another today….
It was toasty today and apparently it was a stormy day as well.
I’m glad we were at the beach today.

Mill Plain area, in the 40 minutes it took for the first line of thunderstorms to pass through, the temperature dropped 22° — from a high of 88° down to 66°. Should relieve any doubt about the lapse rate in that column of air.
I feel your pain with being sick Mark. I’m sick too 😒 I was coming home from being downtown when I hit that gust front around 82nd and I-84. Everyone started slowing down. The wind was crazy, there was all this dust in the air and debris (branches, paper, etc). When I got home, lightning and thunder went on for 30 minutes. Funny thing, I saw it on the weather models a few days ago (mostly the GFS) 🤗🤗🤗
I hope you feel better Mark 😉
Really is an interesting little pattern anomaly. Enjoying it! Hiked Mt. Defiance in the a Gorge yesterday. Rain free to the summit. Then T storms/rain rolled around off/on on the descent. 9 hr. sojourn.
Sorry you’re sick, Mark…. that’s really a bum way to end a vacation.
We hardly got to 80° here in Damascus… and loved the wild and crazy thunder/lightning storm. we had pouring rain, too. Yippee!
