Vacation Time

I will be on vacation most of the next 2 week, heading both north into Canada and south to Diamond Lake.  It’s the best weather of the year so time to get outside and the weather looks quite slow as well.   No posts until at least Sunday the 30th.

Wow how many vacations do you get a year? And are they PAID vacations? Seems like you are always going on vacation. How does that work exactly and why do you get SO MANY Days off?

  2. n3eg says:

Finally – Death Ridge 2017. It’s about time we had some warm weather around here.

  3. JJ78259 says:

I think it is finally hot enough for me to return to Portland I fly in Wednesday, San Antonio had 104 yesterday and today!! Can’t wait!

    • lurkyloo says:

Welcome back JJ! Guess the weather will be right up your alley. I’ll be absolutely miserable. You have fun!

  4. Jake-(Gresham near Nadaka Nature Park) says:

Perfect. Record heatwave with no thunderstorms insight. If I’m going to suffer I want something in return. Sigh, so hot you could call it air off the stove top. Oie.

  5. JERAT416 says:

Are we talking July 2009 potential this coming week? Sure looks like it.

  6. PDX will reach at least 108 next week, with a low of no less than 75. Then, this winter will bring, at a minimum:
    =36 inches of snow
    =an all-time low of at least -4
=at least seven nights below 10 degrees
=at least four days with lows below 20 degrees
=at least twenty days with highss below freezing
    =no 50 degree+ temps between Dec 15 and Feb 1.

Portland’s all time record high temperature of 107°F may be in jeopardy…

    157 PM PDT SAT JUL 29 2017

    TEMPERATURES
Record High temperatures are likely inland climbing to around 100 Tuesday, heating up to 103 to 108 Wednesday and Thursday with heat possibly continuing into Friday. Low temperatures are expected to remain warm dropping only into the mid 60s to lower 70s.

    https://inws.ncep.noaa.gov/a/a.php?i=14675149

    • PDX could be hotter than Phoenix next Wed/Thur, depending on how the forecast plays out.

    • Paul D says:

I’m hoping for the biggest forecast bust in history – record setting low high temperatures on those days. They say we hit 100+ and we stay below 70.

It’ll never happen but a guy can dream ☺️

    • @Paul D – Alas, heat waves like this are one of the easiest of our weather phenomena to forecast, so it’s highly likely this forecast won’t bust epically. The biggest bust foreseeable would be for it to be a mere garden-variety heat wave, instead of a record-breaking one.

  8. Garron 1/3 of a mile from the Hillsboro airport says:

Man this is a long drum roll while Mark is on vacation! He actually gets some interesting weather to come back to!

    • Joshua Downtown PDX says:

I wouldn’t call 107 degrees and sunny interesting. I would choose adjectives like brutal, excessive, ridiculous, absurd, annoying.

  9. Brian Schmit says:

  10. JohnD says:

It will be interesting for sure to get Mark’s heat wave analysis when he returns next week. If it is going to be hot, why not flirt–or finally break!–that all time PDX 107′ reading! We’ll see. More likely garden variety 100 readings. But too early to tell!

  11. Paul D says:

Far too hot this coming week. Please stop the madness….

  12. Garron 1/3 of a mile from the Hillsboro airport says:

‘BECAUSE MARK IS GONE” There is a slight chance that temps will WAY over achieve middle of next week! I’ve seen some models calling for 110 D/F. It all depends on the track of the thermal low and how far west it pushes as to how many days end up over 100, and if it pushes a lil bit farther east earlier, and being in the 90’s instead. Still gonna be hot and nearl 90 or above all the way through next Sat. at this point!

  13. JERAT416 says:

If AccuWeather and even UWX are any indication, whomever is making the 7 day forecast while Mark is gone may have a cold bias. Next week could be quite hot. I still prefer the two 100 degree days then a quick cool down over a whole weak of 95-100.

  14. My highs for the past 3 days: 81, 76, 67. 4:30 PM and the marine layer overcast has yet to burn off here (though it’s trying). Currently 66. Maybe I’ll best the 67 by a degree or two if it burns off soon?

Oh well, beats the Eastern/Midwestern summer ritual of highs in the 90s and dew points well into the 70s hands down. I’ve experienced that sort of summer before, not my cup of tea.

    • Garron 1/3 of a mile from the Hillsboro airport says:

You know what seems funny? The morning clouds seem to have been quite absent down here, which is quite weird! The last several years IMO have seen quite a bit less morning clouds than what I remember to be normal!

  15. Jake-(Gresham near Nadaka Nature Park) says:

The dead heat of Summer is what I’d say we’re in now, brown lawns, and no more allergies for many because of the pollen downturn overall. I’m feeling it already the past 2 weeks. Love this time of year. As long as we doge the triple digits.

  16. W7ENK says:

Last evening’s sunset was — in short — amazing.

A little timelapse I got from the car, just a few blocks from home.

    Enjoy! 🙂

  17. W7ENK says:

I guess Klamath Falls got slammed with a massive thunderstorm last evening, just before sunset. Tim (Supercell1995) sent me a link to some video he got, it looked like an incredible storm!

Watch to at least 5:20 — it’s quite a good show!!

    • Aleta Mekvold says:

My brother said it was something else! It apparently lasted just over an hour.

    • Jason Hougak says:

That’s powerful. My closest call was at Honey Lakes in early 2000’s west of the 3 Sisters in a tent. Had a brief nice afternoon and then thunderstorms moved in and poured all night with intense thunder and lightning. We backpacked with 6 people. My buddy Ryan told his cousin he wouldn’t need a tent. Luckily I brought a tarp for him.

    • Boydo3 N. Albany says:

      Nice footage Timmy!

  18. Roland Derksen says:

This won’t be my driest July (the best I could do there is No.4), or my warmest, but I’m thinking it could become the one with the most hours of sunlight. The current record for us is 411 hours in July 2013.

    • Garron 1/3 of a mile from the Hillsboro airport says:

Interesting! I wonder what the record for most hours of sunlight is here?

  19. Jason Hougak says:

We need some monsoonal thunderstorms for some weather action and water. Even after the super wet spring it’s drier than a popcorn fart out there!

  20. WEATHERDAN says:

According to GFS big heat wave about August 3rd-7th. Maybe over 100. We shall see. 92 today and 91 Tuesday. July seems to be ending on a warm note. Peace.

  21. JERAT416 says:

So much for a quick cool down Tuesday. I’m guessing that the 7 day will gradually get warmer with eventually all days 85-92.

  22. Tyler Mode in Battle Ground says:

Yesterday’s low of 60 degrees is my first low temperature at/above 60 since August 29th, 2015.

This morning’s low of 49, makes it the 12th day with a low temperature in July in the 40s. This is the most I’ve recorded in the seven July’s I’ve lived here.

  23. Lee Wilson says:

WE are ru,Ning our ac on solar..one way to keep the bill down

  24. High Desert Mat says:

I’m heading to Diamond Lake today for a couple days. Hope to see you there Mark!!

    • High Desert Mat says:

Just got back from the lake. Didn’t see you there Mark but had an awesome time regardless. We rented a studio but got upgraded to a cabin for free because the people didn’t want to move. We didn’t complain. Great place and great time. Mt. Bailey and Mt. Theilsen really cap off the views. Can’t wait to go back. Weather was perfect too.

  25. Hans Wipper says:

    Have a good trip Mark!

  26. W7ENK says:

    lol

Shyow’nuff, monsoonal moisture moving up out of the Desert SW by Sunday/Monday, possibility of thunderstorms in the Cascades and foothills. Perhaps a stray wanders down into the Valley?

  27. JERAT416 says:

Now you’re gonna make us have tons of thunderstorms since you’re gonna be gone mark haha

  28. Paul D says:

    Another vacation? Enjoy!

  29. Roland Derksen says:

Welcome to my country, Mark! Looks like the weather should be fine, but watch out for the fires if you’re heading toward central BC. You might be detoured on some of the routes.

  30. Lee Wilson says:

We been getting free power during the day.
the only power we been paying for is the power we use at night.

And Yes that is really a negative 2, were on a budget pay program
so that means we got 2 kwhrs of credit, other wise we got free power.

These are just samples of the amount of power we are using,
if you try to add up the useage, it won’t be accurate as I randomly slevted out useage .
