4pm Sunday…
Yes, I know many of us were just on spring break. But this coming week I’ll be on an anniversary trip with my wife. I’ll be wearing these…pretty cool eh?
Hurricane themed board shorts. Nice streamlines, satellite imagery & weather maps while swimming. A weather geek’s dream.
I’ll be back at work Monday May 1st.
Chief Meteorologist Mark Nelsen
It’s almost certainly not going to break 80 at my home, and may not even break 70, given the marine influence. But it doesn’t matter. I’m going to be camping in Yakima Canyon, and the forecast high there is in the mid-80s on Thursday. It’s going to be a little on the surreal side going from the coldest May Day in 94 years (official high at SeaTac was only 50 ˚F) to those kind of temperatures.
Weatherunderground shows 84 for Thursday in Hillsboro and it says “clear” but below that it shows 0.28″ of rain. That ought to be interesting 🙂
Yes, Thursday should be my warmest day of the year yet, as well(probably around 70F here) but thundershowers in the forecast as well. Could be intresting, all right.
Now it shows chance of a thunderstorm. That makes sense.
Well of course we’re gonna get something severe thunder stormish! Mark’s on vacation! Oughta be an epic event! Book it, Thursday high of 90, followed by a derechos with front line winds in excess of 50 MPH, 1″ hail and thunder storms. The dew point forecast is NASTY for Thursday, if nothing else it will be mugggggggggggggggggggggggggggggggggggggggggggggggggggggggggggggggggggggggggggggyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyy
Spent weekend on the Deschutes River. Saturday was warm low 70’s but winds really picked up and sky clouded up with sprinkles Saturday night. Still mild and good night for campfire. Fly fishing was tough with high water and the wind. Sunday was very gusty so went to Shears Falls. The hills were a nice green with alot of areas covered with yellow flowering Arrowleaf Balsomroot.
National weather map interesting with a winter storm warning up for snow on the Volcanoes and blizzard warning for parts of northern Kansas. Its a winter that is really trying to holding on. I wonder if this has anything to do with the solar minimum?
Steelhead falls Jason?
Shearers falls.
I have a picture of a cloud formation and I was wondering if you could tell me what it’s called. Not sure where to send it for you.
Awesome!
This is what this consistent rainy weather has blessed the mountain with.
Deep powder✅
Sunny bluebird day✅
Time to ride✅
Beautiful!
very nice!
Enjoy it while it lasts- I heard we’re getting an El Nino next winter! 🙂
The NOAA weather guessers are saying ENSO neutral through June. Then a 50% chance of El Nino Aug-Dec.
Who knows, maybe the strong La Nina we’ve had will persist a bit. The NOAA April forecast was way wrong.
It happened today!!!
606″ Season snowfall
202″ Snow Base
Skiing tomorrow… woohoo!!!
I took this today
I took another March 30th this year last time Mark was gone.
Awesome, beautiful!
Holy crap, dude! Great pictures!!
One thing about this rainy/snowy/wet past winter weather, cutting firewood this early spring has been quite a workout. The wood (trees) are so heavy with water, they are just soaked. Then add cutting on a hill side where the dirt is muddy (when you step and slide a little) and the stickers are healthy and green. So just standing to cut is a workout in itself.
The last several years have been somewhat dry and woodcutting has been a breeze. NOT THIS YEAR!!!! LOL
FOX 12 WHINER BLOG
I don’t think it’s whining for people to want one or two sunny, semi-warm days in late-April/early May. If people are whining about rain in November or December, that’s certainly fair game for criticism, but at this point in the year it’s not out of line for anyone to want nicer weather.
I better not come and read you whining when the sun and 80 degree temps arrive later. 😉
I think it’s understandable that people are complaining. Let me give an example in my neck of the woods: The first 38 days of this past winter (from Dec.21 to January 27th) i had 21 days without precipitation. That’s pretty good! But, look at my first 38 days since spring started on March 21st: Just 6 without rain, counting today(provided some intresting clouds on the horizon don’t come here). If it was the other way around(6 in December/January, 21 in spring) I wouldn’t be sounding off, you can be assured.
Mike I don’t BLOG in the summer
Why I choose not to blog in summer
1. I’m way too busy at work getting water well pumps repaired
2. Our summer is hardly interesting weather wise
3. I’d rather float a river or go rock climbing
4. Summit Cascade Peaks
5. Camp in the back country
6. …
But, you can’t do all those things in the Summer if it’s still raining! 😛
All I ask is for 2 sunny days in a row. Tis all I ask. Throw tomatoes at me all you want….. =D
Did not ever once said I wanted rain in summer. I enjoy having fun in summer just like everybody else. I just choose to enjoy working even in the rain and mud. There are bigger things in life than complaining about weather.
If you don’t wanna hear folks complain about the weather, you don’t wanna visit a weather blog.
Jason, if it rains all this Summer? I’m blaming you. Your pictures will have condemned the lot of us! Doomed! Doomed are we all!
Quick, purchase the last rain coats as the swimsuits come in falsehood! Buy your tickets to Hawaii and make sure your children have rubber duckies for the streets! We all drown. Soon!
On a serious note. It’s sunny outside. Nobody say otherwise. I hate you all. My coffee machine better not break.
Hey Jake! It looks like your two dry days in a row are coming this week! Let’s see a smile on that face 🙂
Do my eyes deceive me? Do I see sun coming next week!
It’s a mirage.
Salem now more than 20 inches of rain above normal since October 1st. But finally it looks like our long Winter of discontent is about to end, hooray. Peace.
Over 20 inches above normal rainfall since October but finally some relief in sight. It looks like the Winter of our discontent is just about over, hooray. Peace.
.
For you guys over on that side of the crest it’s been lots of rain. This side has been wet relatively but the worst thing has been the wind the past few months. I’m over the wind, I’d prefer rain to it.
Almost a half inch of rain as of 6am. Lots more to come.
It can stop any time now…
We had a dry and partly sunny morning up this way, but now that the sun has heated the ground, the convective showers are popping up. First one is underway right now, and I expect this them to be the overall pattern for the rest of the day.
Quack, quack!
Lots of sunshine here for the afternoon. Good to see it, as I recorded showers early this morning. From October 1st to now, I’ve had 54.94 inches- that’s not a record for the Oct-Apr. period.

This year it should be called miserable precipitation instead of measurable, given all the lovely varieties we’ve seen 😦
6-12″ of more snow… bring it!!!
I see we have winter weather alerts popping up in the passes..
Fun weather..
I hear it snowed at 2,500 feet..
I am so ready for warmer weather.
Enjoy your vacation Mark! To all those “jealous” people that work in jobs that don’t get vacations 1 word-schooling. You work hard in life and usually you get rewarded. Much deserved Mark!
Another great night to recline by the woodstove as the rain can be heard on the metal roof.
We all miss you Mark. Thanks for telling us fans of our favorite weather geek what you’ve been up to lately. Have a beautiful anniversary trip for you and your wife. By the way………very nice pants!! Linda Cramer
Oh, how I wish we could put together 3 straight days without rain for the start of May- I don’t think we’ll see it for April. My total up til now is 5.74 inches.
195″ base at Timberline and 590″ snow for the season. Likely to break 600″ season and 200″ base this week. Weather blog is so slow it’s rediculous. The weather that is happening outside should be something to talk about. Still wet, muddy and enjoyable!
Hey Jason, only 5″ more snow needed at Timberline to get up to a 200″ base. Think they’ll get there?

.SYNOPSIS…Yes, Virginia, there is more rain coming.
We all know what happens to our weather ’round here when Mark goes on vacation…
4 feet of thunder snow followed by 90 degrees the same day and a Columbus day level storm and basketball sized hail….
Happy anniversary Mark! Just absolutely beautiful weather at the final round of the Valero Open yesterday about mile from my house. It made it a great round of golf to watch. Little warmer today clear blue skies.
Have to cut Mark some slack for taking Many vacations recently. This last winter must have been hectic with all the extended work hours. Have fun on your trip.
Happy Anniversary! Be sure and use sunscreen. Our sensitive Oregon skin burn easily.
Happy anniversary. Wish you the best.
Have fun in whatever warm place you’re going Mark!
Mark goes on more vacations then anybody I know. Be safe and have a happy anniversary. The winter weather is about to begin in the mountains. Winter weather advisory for heavy snow down to 3,500′. Time to get in some fresh powder turns.
They must have a generous vacation plan for people who have been there as long as Mark has 🙂
