Strongest April Windstorm in 50 Years Arriving

Wow!  That accelerated quickly….

Our models were correct and we have a major spring windstorm moving into the valley this morning.  Wind gusts are looking more like the strong models showed.  Hold on…it’s going to be a wild ride the next few hours.

The initial burst of wind has hit Portland…PDX has hit 53 mph, and Salem has a gust to 60.  54 at McMinnville.  I see a gust to 78 mph on the West Hills, a speed I haven’t seen at that location in at least 10 years.  A weather station on Chehalem Mtn. near Newberg has recorded a gust to 73 mph.

Widespread power outages have occurred of course.  I see PGE already reporting almost 50,000 out.  This is going to be an April storm to remember.

Satellite imagery shows the surface low just west of Tillamook so peak wind gusts should be between now at noon.

8:34am…Okay, generator is on…power went out partway through blog post.  Looks like up to 80,000 PGE customers now and a 56 mph gust at PDX.  61 at Hillsboro!  Wow, quite a storm.

Power restored at 9:00 am Castle Rock Washington.. Cowlitz County.

  2. The combination of “great” winds and rain, here in NE Portland (near PDX), are going to make travelling (to the store etc.), very interesting. Power still on.

Severe weather can happen anywhere! Wow just watching Kptv live stream what wide spread damage!

  4. Kathleen says:

No power here for the last 4 hours. We are in the Eola Hills just east of Amity. No idea when it will be back on. Heavy hail just now.

  5. Lee Wilson says:

    Note: No banks are open
Stores that have no power are closed
And you have to be insane to drive wherever there are trees?

    And this is round 1?

  6. Lee Wilson says:

Here is how we are coping with the outage.

  7. Garron near Hillsboro airport says:

Wow! I am officially impressed! Only took me an hour to drive 3 miles down Cornell. Majority of the traffic signals were out from 185 and Cornell to past Cornelius Pass road. Tones of trees down and even a good section of our fence has blown down.

  8. jeloughrey says:

The power was out at my house in Rose City/NE PDX from about 7:30am-9am. Part of my fence is blown down. The tall Doug firs around here are bending pretty hard. Looks like we have a few more hours to get through. It’s not just the wind gusts that are impressive, but the predicted duration. Crossing my fingers for no more damage.

  9. SR says:

The fence across the street, which got knocked over by the F0 Orchards Tornado, just got blown over again. Good thing he only did temporary repairs while he waited on the insurance company!

  10. Phil in Beaverton says:

Wow, wasn’t expecting this kind of wind in April.

My phone barometer seemed to hit bottom around 7AM at about 979hPa. Now it’s risen up to 983hPa. I suppose that’s good news. Any ideas about how much longer this lasts?

  11. Wendy-Silverlake, WA says:

Power went out at 7:40. Winds are insane. My greenhouse has been completely ripped apart. (Looks exactly like the one you have Mark according to a picture you sent about ice one time)

  12. Lee Wilson says:

Were off the grid…no power save for solar.cowlitz PUD is swamped

  13. Lee Wilson says:

Friend from Kalama has no power, there on emergency generator.
All of Kalama Washington is with out power..

    We just lost power.

  14. Lee Wilson says:

I am wondering how many people ignored the wind warning.

The George has got to be going about now.

  19. Jake-(Gresham near Nadaka Nature Park) says:

Mark, power shuttered here several times till we lost power for about a minute 30 minutes ago from the initial escalation.

Neighborhood looks like there’s a giant leaf blower over it. Haven’t seen this since my childhood in the mid 90’s when a fir tree took out 2 houses and car parked in one of the driveways. Smelling some nasty upscale to this with the saturated soil.

    Repost from previous:

Power bumps continuing in the Downtown core.

Power out in my Mom’s neighborhood as of 0715.

Loud explosion and power is out in my neighborhood as of 0725.

Coworker just got a call from his neighbor, power is out in South Milwaukie (unincorporated) and he has a tree down through his house.

Ouch, I feel bad for your that person.
      We are having internment blinks.

The winds slows down time 7 the surges to 40 to 60 mph.

It’s making me real uneasy when my son keeps speaking of tornadoes…
