Snow Storm Beginning

Two obvious changes this evening:

  1. There is FAR more moisture available than models were showing, at least this evening.  There is very heavy rain moving through the central valley right now.
  2. Our snowstorm has begun a good 3-4 hours ahead of schedule, this is clipping the end of the evening commute.

We’ll be on most of the evening on FOX12 with snow coverage…I’ll see you there!

This looks like a classic deformation band drawing in that subtropical stuff. Not too different than 8 or so years ago. Portland will get a foot, valley will get not much.

  2. W7ENK says:

    5-3/4″ as of 10:45p

The trees in this area have become so laden with snow, if this continues all night it may start to become a serious problem. :/

    • W7ENK says:

No sooner do I say that…

I just got a message from my Mom who lives about 1 mile from me here — she had moved her car off the street and into her driveway so no one would slide down the hill and hit it. Her Doug Fir just started self-pruning, and the first branch fell directly onto her car. 😥

  3. pgiorgio says:

This reminds of a 1992 snow storm where Rhonda Shelby was predicting a few flurries 24 hrs before much of portland got 8-12 inches. Good lord NWS predicting maybe 1 inch of snow 8 hours before the storm

It’s 10:45 P.M and it’s SNOWING like crazy up here in Kelso, WA (North). the 1/8″ I reported earlier, forget about it. We’re at 3″ easy now. I can’t believe Kelso and Longview schools are still waiting to call off school for tomorrow.

  5. Lee Wilson says:

Castle Rock School busses on Snow routes..but we’re to listen for additional information in the morning.

  6. pgiorgio says:

I’m calling this forecast a major bust. Snow is all the way up to south seattle in WA. Models were terrible predicting this just hours away. Precipitation amounts are much higher than models showed and snow totals will end up much higher than forecasted even by the most robust forecast of 1 to 4 in. of anyone in town.

    • Dave in South Salem (500') says:

No, he said it could change. The placement of the low made a big difference. It came in a bit further north than models said. There are actually two lows so it’s harder to say what would have happened given the data he had.

    • Marc (Brush Prairie, WA) says:

Couldn’t one always assume the weather could change when giving a forecast. It’s OK to call a bust when you see a bust. This is a big one. Clark County expected 1 inch of snow and they might end up with over a foot. That qualifies as a forecast bust.

  7. Megan says:

Just sleet where I am in Newberg. Hoping for snow.

  8. pgiorgio says:

Mark are you sticking with 1 to 4 inches? Seems like most already have that from reports

  9. Ken in Sheridan says:

Started snowing at 5:30pm – about 1 inch now – everything white and it’s still coming down. No wind. 32.4F.

  10. Diana F says:

Neighbors are outside doing the Fire Dance! IN A SNOWSTORM!

  11. BeaverDreams says:

Absolutely dumping here in West Slope…..I’d say 4-6 inches at minimum before morning, and that could be underestimating it majorly.

  12. Jake-(Gresham) says:

Annnnnnd…. there goes the whole freeway system:,-122.5884876,13z/data=!5m1!1e1

    • Hal in Aims says:

but there are trains and the bus and..and…..check with W7 on how that works……

    • Jake-(Gresham) says:

      Yeah… no kidding.

Accident reported both on I-84 Westbound and Eastbound. Choke

Sigh, told my brother to go down 122nd and then take Glisan to get home. If that fails then things are totally done. Emphasized on avoiding the freeways.

Man, the news is showing gridlock in a lot of places. Not again.

  13. R.G. - Oregon City 365' says:

Snowing at a good clip in OC; radar not handling the transition line well. Closing in on 1″. Took a while for the snow to cool off the wet surfaces with the initial precip as rain.

    • Ev in The 'Couve (Lakeshore, 150' msl) says:

Thanks for letting us know, R.G.

I was very curious as to what was actually happening down there. You guys are getting dumped on, judging by that radar…

  14. Hal in Aims says:

heat some water Mildred………we’ve got us a snow storm………

  15. Ev in The 'Couve (Lakeshore, 150' msl) says:

Would love to hear someone from Eugene report in.

Also: is OC and environs really seeing rain now? I don’t believe the radar is handling the precip types correctly, but it would be nice to hear from someone down that way to see what’s happening on the ground.

  16. Dome is keeping the snow well away from me but not the wind. Lights just blinked. Looks like I might be in for a Fraser outflow windstorm. Haven’t had one of those yet this year, which is sort of a surprise given how many outflow events there have been.

  17. Joshua Downtown PDX says:

What’s up with the snow line being eroded to the south and east?

  18. Katpdx says:

    Emily! Snow!

  19. Like a Kid in Snow - Dallas says:

It started snowing here in Dallas around 6:15ish and two hours later we had 3 inches!! Not sure how much more we will get? It is tapering off now and the radar is showing it turn back to mixed precipitation? I didn’t think it would be changing back over, isn’t it only getting colder?

  20. Jake-(Gresham) says:

Temp 32F wind 20mph with gusts to 30mph:

  21. Max in Fairview says:

Wow, what a mess on US 26 in the West Hills.

  22. Garron 1/3 of a mile from Hillsboro Airport says:

A good solid inch at the time of this posting, and dumping!

  23. Shane says:

    Awwww yeahhhhhh
