2pm: Snowstorm Beginning

We’re all seeing the snow now in the metro area with the storm getting started.  Hope most of you are home!

I see a few school districts didn’t release the kids at noon…that could be a problem.

We’ll be live on FOX12 likely the rest of the day.

  2. Nancy Larsen says:

Thanks to your suggestion, we picked up our kids by 2pm. We’ve been home safe and sound enjoying the beauty of the snow, watching a Christmas movie, and eating warm chocolate chip cookies and milk. Thank you Mark!!

  3. Jenny says:

Yes, I was surprised that Beaverton school district didn’t listen to the forecast and release early. Luckily I was able to pick up my son but last I heard other kids were still waiting for busses to pick them up an hour after school was over!!

  5. MasterNate says:

So will there be snow showers tonight or will it just all come to an end soon? Usually we have lots of showers after a front moves through. Just wondering about additional snow accumulations.

    • BeaverDreams says:

Looking at the radar, seems like an ongoing wave of moisture rolling in for couple more hours at least….

  6. Nicole says:

    2.5 inches in Salmon Creek.

  7. Katrina Bruland says:

I picked up my daughter at 2:30, no issues at all going over skyline. Home at 2:45. At 3:00 I decided to move the car somewhere else but it was too late. Son’s bus was stranded at skyline and Cornell at 3:15. Neighbor’s kid has to SPEND THE NIGHT at LIncoln!!

  8. Shane says:

So I’m guessing that Vancouver largely got missed for the 2+ inches of snow

  9. Andy says:

Moderate snow Albany and Jefferson Or…1.5 ” in Jefferson.

  10. Wendy-Silverlake, WA says:

So much for high and dry here. Not big snow flakes, but they are adding up.

  11. Dave in South Salem (500') says:

Mark, nice to see your station hit Beaverton School District for ignoring your advice. Salem Keizer closed early so all good here. Ignoring your warning ruined a lot of peoples day that’s for sure.

    • Dave in South Salem (500') says:

Portland schools were hilarious. I love you guys for calling them out on their stupidity. Mark said long ago early release is the best plan. They doubted you until it was too late.

  12. BeaverDreams says:

Safe to say the forecasters underestimated this for Portland metro

  13. Andy says:

Snowing Jefferson Oregon area, Half inch and still snowing… 30 deg…Albany 8 miles away nothing .

  14. marinersfan85 says:

Safe to say I told ya so!

    • pappoose in scappoose says:

Let’s see. We MAY get lucky and see a solid 2″ in much of the metro area…no, wait…we may get 3″ if we’re lucky enough to find ourselves under a band of heavier snow…no, wait…

For those with a smartphone that has a built-in barometer. Help contribute to science by allowing your phone to send air pressure data! Really great feature for hiking trips too! Oh, and it’s ad free. 🙂

I know people have mentioned this app before but I thought it could use some support!

  16. Jay says:

Longview/kelso is getting alot of snow right now.

  17. Jake-(Gresham) says:

Started at 1pm with a temp. of 32F.

Currently, 27F and snowing good with gusty winds of about 20mph.

  18. Dave in South Salem (500') says:

It’s almost a whiteout here. Been all snow since 1pm. The cold air must have bottled up against the South Salem hills. We are over an inch for sure because the lawns are covered.

  19. Prairiedog says:

Interesting watching the onset of the moisture. Molalla had rain then it turned over with the evaporational cooling. I had an hour of moderate sleet before it turned to tiny flakes. The infamous warm nose moving up the west flanks of the Cascades is always a nuisance but looks like the mid levels are cooling back down. Other places just stayed snow. I dropped from 34f to 30f once the moisture got cranking.

  20. W7ENK says:

There’s a loud, obnoxious horn going off steady in Downtown Portland near the Hawthorne Bridge, it almost sounds like an old Civil Defense siren. Or maybe someone crashed their car nearby and the horn got stuck? Seems louder than that…

Anyone else near downtown hear that?

  21. Mark H says:

How far south will the precipitation be snow? Freezing rain all day in Eugene

  22. Gregg in Bend, formerly Troutdale Gregg says:

15″ in Bend so far and still snowing heavy

  23. BeaverDreams says:

Is it safe to say this storm has moved further north than was anticipated??

    • Jake-(Gresham) says:

Its track is pretty much spot on but it is none the less slightly North with more intensity than anticipated. A lot more people going to be in the 3in end in the PDX area of the prediction than the lower end when this is all said and done IMO!

  24. Diana F says:

wow Live News on Channel 12, showing the snow AND showing the roads are a mess!

AND a weather blog to follow too~

Home all snuggly and warm. Well, me and the Cat. Who stares out the window and does NOT want to be messed with while doing so.

Merry __ Christmas, Fellow Weather Geeks!

  25. Jack in Corbett says:

Out here in Corbett the snow is very fine / dry and blowing side ways given our 60 to 70 mph winds. Temperature has dropped to 24.8*

  26. Taylor (Happy Valley) says:

Snowing pretty significantly in Happy Valley right now. And it’s very cold too 26 degrees here.

  27. Jake-(Gresham) says:

I’ve gone off into snow coma (watching this… can’t help it):

  28. Mark H says:

Are we gonna get any in the south valley or staying rain?

  29. W7ENK says:

Snowing pretty good in Downtown Portland right now. A good solid dusting on everything but the road surfaces, which are just wet. That’ll become a problem here shortly…

  30. Jason Hougak says:

    I’m so excited
