Wettest Day in a Month!

11pm Thursday…

Wow, some real downpours out there this evening.  Yes, it has been noted as a forecast failure on the report card for next week too…I’m sure you were wondering!

Take a look at the rain totals for the metro area.

PLOT_Rain_Metro_Autoplot

The PDX number is incorrect since it appears we’ve seen .53″ so far today; the wettest day since May 15th.  In Troutdale it has been the wettest day since December!

The timing of the heavy rain is excellent since we’re about to head into a very dry pattern.  Take a look at the GFS 10 day outlook…other than showers tomorrow it appears dry through at least the 3rd of July:

gfs_10day

Also notice the last 3 days of this model have shown no rain next week:

KPDX_2016062400_qpf_240

The ECMWF ensembles from the 12z run today were similarly dry…showing no rain through at least the 5th of July.

The total at the bottom is the ensemble average.  Each line above is one ensemble member.

The key message here is that summer is going to arrive BEFORE the 4th of July this year.  Or maybe it arrived in early April, or May, or early June…you choose.  Lots of warm spells this spring!

The good news is that I don’t see HOT weather on the way, just warm to very warm weather.  It’s unlikely we get to 90 or above over the next week.  That’s because we don’t get a hot ridge over the West Coast but it remains to our east, allowing incursions of marine air from time to time.  Nature’s air conditioning will keep things under control west of the Cascades.

Dan calls people names when called out and can’t even spell the so-called names out right. Funny. Dan, you lived here during normal pnw weather most of your life, the last 2.5-3 years have been really warm, so that means every month and year are warm from here on out? Get real and grow up, when you’re called out, dont call names Daniella. Wow, dont I feel like you now. Cant wait to hear your silence a year from now. Btw, wasn’t it two winters ago that had record lows and snows in Eugene? Just an example, peace out old man.

  2. Some striking displays of Ac castellanus clouds here since sunrise- really nice! A few have deepened and changed to cumulus (even a small Cb) this evening. I wonder if they’ll be a few thundershowers in my area tonight?

  3. WEATHERDAN says:

90 yesterday. Our 5th of the year. 81 at 1:00 PM so we might hit 90 again today. 4th of July weekend looks like we will have some morning clouds with a high of around 80. That is just about average for early July. Looks pretty much Julyugustember for the next two weeks. Mainly 80,s but it may approach 90 from time to time. But no big heat wave. The heat seems to be centered in the central U.S for now. Starting to hear fireworks at night now. I don’t mind people setting them off but I wish they would quit by 10:00 PM. Have a happy Independence everyone. Peace.

    • High Desert Mat says:

Sounds like a copycat forecast from Mark. And no offense, but you sound old, no fireworks this time of year past ten? Its light until 1030. You cant even see the good ones earlier than that or you’re wasting your money.

Fyi, if you ever get on the “forums”, take to heart what Phil says, the tides have turned and the effects will be noticeable soon. I agree

  4. Tyler Mode in Battle Ground says:

So close today…89.4 for the high (so far) here in Battle Ground.

  5. Tyler Mode in Battle Ground says:

A year ago today it was 96 at my house in Battle Ground…no thanks!

  6. Garron 1/3 of a mile from Hillsboro Airport says:

Welcome back Mark! Just in time for summer-uary! FANTASTIC day out here right now!

  7. Tyler Mode in Battle Ground says:

48.5 for a low this morning and it’s full on sun. What a great day!

  8. 2.74 inches of rainfall for me this month- unless, of course we get a few showers before July 1st, but that’s unlikely. Anyway, not a bad month: I get a “normal” amount of precipt. and temperatures still will be a bit above normal.

  9. Paul D says:

The 7-day looks like August, so maybe when August comes we’ll get some June temperatures?

I know it ain’t gonna happen, but a guy can dream……

  10. Dizzyland says:

The Weather Forums no longer block access but today they pushed the button marked drunk as a skunk and are totally lost just two people BSing each other.

  11. Boring Oregon says:

    Storm totals:
    Thursday: 1.00in
    Friday: 0.07in
That brings my month total up to 3.72in. Also, Thursday was my second day in june that I got more that an inch of rain.

  12. Low clouds here this morning with some very light drizzle: Kind of reminds me again of… Junuary! Seriously, though, I expect we’ll see sun and warm temperatures soon

    • Dizzyland says:

Juneau is up in Alaska. Once in a while they reach today’s temps though and they call it a heatwave.

  13. Tyler Mode in Battle Ground says:

With 2.67″ for June (dry for the rest of the month) I’m only 0.01″ away from the June-July-August total in 2015.

  14. Boring Oregon says:

I like the new 7-day graphic.

    • Paul D says:

Way too many 80-somethings in it. August is being rude again and not waiting its turn.

  15. WEATHERDAN says:

67 and partly cloudy at 2:00 PM. After the .37 yesterday we are at .96 for June. Unlikely to get any additional this month. So that gives us .29 more than last June. Should hit about 71 today. About what was predicted. Long stretch of sunny warm Julyugustember weather ahead of us. Mid to upper 80,s. Right in my comfort zone. Not hearing any fireworks so far which is unusual but welcome. I remember on July 4th 1986 Timberline got 8 inches of snow. And that was during a average Summer. So it can happen anytime. Here’s to a great weekend all. Peace.

    Welcome home, Mark!

Yesterday was pretty much a washout, I ended up with 0.50″ at my place when all was said and done. It didn’t really rain hard, except for twice in the late afternoon / early evening, but the clouds just seemed to drip all day long. Definitely what I would consider the epitome of Juneuary. Classic.

The rain sure did make people on the roads go flat stupid, though. In my 10 minute drive from the MAX to home, I caught 5 idiots on my dashcam DWB! (Driving without brain) It was bad…

Today is shaping up to be about the same, it’s been sprinkling/drizzling off and on all day, flat out raining right now. Of course we won’t have nearly as much rain as we did yesterday without those couple of heavy downpours, but there’s still time yet.

FWIW, I’m at 1.77″ for June, not including anything that fell last night or today.

    • Garron 1/3 of a mile from Hillsboro Airport says:

Yeah yesterday was an epic day of “DRIVING ME CRAZY!” Instead of the movie Driving Miss Daisy… I drove from 176th and Cornell, to the Tanasbourne Safeway, about 9 blocks. It took a full 15 minutes at 3:30 – 3:45PM yesterday. They need to put food carts along busy roads like this, I could’ve used a snack while I was waiting to grab dinner!

    • Paul D says:

That area is way too busy anymore. I avoid it as much as possible.

  17. Paul D says:

Welcome back Mark! Hope your vacation was enjoyable!

  18. runrain says:

80’s sound good. Warm enough to sit out on the deck with a cold drink but not enough to make it uncomfortable in the house. And some morning clouds to keep it cool in the early morning hours.

  19. Jason Hougak says:

Fresh Juneuary snow accumulation at Timberline

    • W7ENK says:

It’s funny, Timberline has seen more snow this June than they saw in all of January 2015!

Oh, but you can’t call this Juneuary, remember…?

    • Dizzyland says:

Nope because Juneau is up in Alaska! 🙂 This is Global Warmingary month. If it comes to the point we all have to drive little Obama save the earth cars to save ourselves from burning up forget it. I’ll just take the bus with no car insurance payments necessary!

    • Dizzyland says:

      Test

    • Dizzyland says:

My other comment didn’t went thru and vanished into cyber space. Weird. I was going to make a joke about the name Juneuary.

  20. Lee Wilson says:

“It’s unlikely we get to 90 or above over the next week. ”

OK will be expecting near 100 then…lol…just kidding…

Hey here is something I am not joking on.
How co.email we have trees and other things turning fall colors already?

    • Joshua Downtown PDX says:

If they’re turning fall colors already, they are dying. Not enough water.

    • pappoose in scappoose says:

Can you say DEAD. No joke.

Gonna join runrain on the deck.

    • I’m just speculating- but if you see leaves falling from a maple tree, check them; If they look crinkly with white spots on them, that’s from powdery mildew. It happens to my tree in the front yard during cool wet periods in the summer.

    • Lurkyloo says:

I have a couple of crabapple trees that started shedding leaves last week. They’re about 10 years old, but I’ve never had to water them before. Now the leaves that are left are looking reddish brown. That hot spell really did a number on ’em. Either that or they’re just old now?

  21. Lee Wilson says:

We got some pretty good winds Yesterday as well.
Turbine in some cases brought in 250 watts of power.

  22. Tyler Mode in Battle Ground says:

Today’s 0.95″ is more rain than I received all of last June. It’s also a monthly daily record for me. Sitting at 2.55″ now for the month.

  23. 0.74″ here today. Rain felt good
