Nice Midday Satellite Image

Beautiful pic from the AQUA satellite at midday.  Snow covered terrain east of the Cascades.  If you look closely you can identify a bunch of features, some man-made.  The Roosevelt Fire burn area is still there east of The Dalles, plus the cleared forests underneath the cross-Cascade power line corridors.  Lots of urban concrete/homes/pavement too.

Those snow-covered areas will be REALLY cold the next few nights.  Lots of below zero readings likely in Central Oregon.  West of the Cascades we should settle down into the low-mid 20s tonight and then some upper teens in the colder outlying areas (Hillsboro/Battle Ground) the following 2 nights.  But that afternoon sunshine is sure glorious!

  1. 38 and overcast is really thinning now after thickening a bit and dropping a degree around 1PM. NWS models forecast it would burn off about now. Looks like they are a tad early with that. Also looks like it may well be one of those “maximize the cold” scenarios, where it doesn’t dissipate completely until around 3PM, by which time the sunlight is already weakening, not much heating happens at ground level, and things are clear as night falls to maximize radiational cooling.

Why is the NWS mentioning snow??? They smoking that green stuff now? The only freezing temps are in sheltered shaded locations which may have some freezing rain. Inversion is strengthening, I can now see the smog pollution layer forming over the valley. There will be now snow in the valley, maybe eastern Gorge if there is even enough precip.

  3. Overcast and 38 at noon. Seems a tad thinner than an hour ago.

20 this morning. Coldest morning of 2015 so far. 38 at Noon. Last 3 days have been 51/52/51. On Wednesday they were predicted by the NWS to be at 43/41/40. They missed by 8/11/11.Must be their cold bias I guess (sarcasm). Hard to see how we get any snow on Monday because our fzl was 8600 feet this morning. Possibly a little zr though. November continues our trend of above average months albeit not by much. Had a great Thanksgiving weekend. Really enjoyed the sunshine. How about Oregon vs. Michigan in the Fiesta bowl on New Years? Decent possibility. Peace.

It’s going to snow tomorrow, because I won’t be here…

  6. 31 this morning after an overnight low of 26. There is stratus overhead and it seems to be on the thick side, though the sun is still low so it’s hard to tell. Odds are it will be a much grayer day for me than the past several have been.

  7. It’s also my coldest morning of the year here today: 22.3F, which makes it the lowest temperature since Dec.31 of last year. A few patches of freezing fog reported as well.
