This storm has not disappointed along the coast…note the peak wind gusts as of 8am. Many of these just occurred so we might see a few go a bit higher. I see the HTC Relay folks moved the finish line off the beach as tents/equipment started moving around:
- Astoria 45
- Cannon Beach 60
- Garibaldi 61
- Pacific City 65
- Lincoln City 52
- Gleneden Beach 53
- Newport 58
- Yachats 56
Inland, where we have been expecting wind gusts 35-45 mph, wind is just getting going.
- Forest Grove 31
- Aurora 32
- Salem 35
- Happy Valley 33
- Chehalem Mtn 48
Those are strong wind gusts for August!
Check out the satellite image from earlier this morning, a heck of surface low:
and the Ocean Shores radar shows the low moving quickly up the coastline. Appears to already be west of Long Beach.
I have to admit, I like having a wind event (or storm) with some sunshine and temperatures in the 70s. You can clean up the yard in shorts and t-shirt afterwards!
A few of the overnight showers contained lightning. I woke up to a couple flashes (but no thunder) and I see 2-3 strikes in the metro area. Must have been quite a bit of cloud-to-cloud action since some of you say you saw lots of flashes:

Astoria just gusted to 56. Winds are blustery up here. Not a fan of the huge poplar on the south side of our house full of leaves about 15 feet from the back deck. Wish the neighbor would get rid of it. Makes me nervous. Thing drops limbs like crazy and they all land on our roof
26 mph now in Battle Ground. I’m a little protected from the south, some of these gusts seem like 30+. It may also seem like more just because the trees are fully leafed out.
Just hit 29 mph now
36 mph @ 9:22 AM
0.35″ in the gauge this morning. No thunder and lightning overnight up this way. Not windy yet, but forecasts say that’s on its way.
Barometer is at 1003 mbar this morning which is very low for August.
Wow, winds are whipping
We got a nice deal this morning a real treat to some awesome lightning.
Lightning From Morning Thunderstorm: http://youtu.be/SnsRBcZ5tCM
Oh yes! Not quite as active as one year, one month and a day ago, but still a lot of fun to watch.
Quite the little bout of thunder and lightning last night, woke me up around 4am, rumbled for a good 20 minutes. Near constant flashes in the sky coming from every which way at one point, but it all came to an abrupt end right when it was getting good. Managed to squeeze out a healthy 0.26″ of rain overnight.
Now the wind is just getting going.
The sky looks weird.
Same here except 30 minutes sooner. The thunder seemed quieter than usual.
29.47 and steady here in Ocean Park believe low is just passing the Peninsula. Winds to 58 mph
Thanks for the report, Patrick. Great to get info from there.
Here’s the wind
High Wind Warning for our neighbors.
