Open The Windows! Air Quality Good in Portland This Evening

10:40pm Sunday…

Whew…good news!  Things are changing quickly this evening in air quality news.  Just as models were showing, the onshore flow this evening is shoving the smoke to the east and air quality is rapidly returning to normal.  Take a look at the current values of Air Quality Index which have all been dropping through the evening.  In fact just as I was typing this up at 10:30pm, it suddenly went to GOOD category in Portland…very nice.

Note many locations are already back to normal but some spots are taking longer to clear out, mainly eastern sections of the western valleys and Cascade foothills.

Enjoy the fresh air, the sun should look a LOT brighter tomorrow!

Wouldn’t seem weird to actually get some rain?

  4. WEATHERDAN says:

70 and smoky at 11:00 AM with some light Northeast winds. Some Altocumulus Castellanus as well. Models indicating maybe two inches of rain next weekend. We shall see. Several times this Summer we had several can’t miss systems that nevertheless missed us. This also includes last week. So if the rain actually falls I will then believe it. Peace.

That’s a beautiful map. Lets hope it paints the correct picture.

    • Jason Hougak says:

      I like it alot

    • I’d like the look of the map better if the white area between Alaska and the lower 49 states was shaded with colour as well.

    • W7ENK says:

I guess you’d have to talk to your government about that. But until then, only Neutral probabilities for you! lol

    • W7ENK, my country’s government is pretty slow when it comes to answering some questions- particularly about weather. For instance, back on May 5 the official weather station here (at the Airport) didn’t have a rainfall amount available for the day. I asked them about it a couple of weeks later. They responded and said they would have it ready soon. Well, I’m still waiting! 😦

    • Joshua says:

It was showing the same thing for this whole week not long ago. Cautiously optimistic.

TBH, I found the smoke rather interesting. The smell was pleasant, it reminded me of summers from when I was growing up, before they had all the regulations and restrictions on field burning in the Willamette Valley, and the smoke would often times drift North into Portland. It did get a bit overwhelming by afternoon though, and I can definitely sympathize with those who have respiratory issues. I am glad it only lasted a day and a half.

It made for some awesome, other-worldly looking skies, that’s for sure!

    • Jason Hougak says:

I enjoyed it too, brought variety to the weather action.

    • JohnD says:

We “urban hiked” from SW out to Mt. Tabor and back Sat. (3 hrs. +/- 8 mi.); enjoyed the smoke phenomenon sort of.–eerie, unusual, etc. Yeah reminiscent of bygone field burning days. We don’t have any respiratory issues ourselves; but certainly sympathized with those who do. I honestly can’t recall such a pervading smoke event in all my years here!

Nice to see blue sky again, too.

  7. Jason Hougak says:

Are those rain chances coming from what is now Typhoon Atsani?

  8. MasterNate says:

Look at our rain chances on this run! Getting better.

    • David B. says:

Let’s hope it doesn’t flop again.

    • MasterNate says:

Get ready for fall like weather this weekend with rain, and another shot early next week. My sources say the fall like weather could stick around off and on through mid Sept. Either way, no heat in sight. Lets hope the models finally have it right!

  9. runrain says:

The should smell fine today. The real stink will come from the stock market!

  10. Paul D says:

Some 70’s and rain in the forecast to tease us. I don’t believe it.
