Vacation Update

As mentioned in the previous post, I’m on vacation this week.  Hot and sweaty in Florida, as it always is in June!  We’ve seen some nice thunderstorm action three different days and Tuesday evening was great after dark with lightning flashing around the theme parks but not too much rain.  After my daughter spent almost all of the last trip in the hospital, I thought she should get a chance to go back and see all the Harry Potter stuff at Universal Resort in Orlando.  We’ve been here 3 days, then we’ll do 1 at Disney and 1 at the beach (Melbourne) before heading home.

After yesterday evening’s thunderstorm the crowds cleared out and the sky looked like home (in winter).  That plus the “snowy” buildings made for a great picture that definitely doesn’t look like Central Florida!  Don’t let it fool you, it was warm and sweaty at the time.

Today marked day #10 of 80°+ temps this month. It has been 11 long years since PDX has had that many in the month of June. The current record number of days 80 or above for the month of June stands at 16 set back in 1987. By this time next week (24th or so) we should be around 14 days. Seems with extended forecast that the current record for June may be obliterated come the end of the month. The 00z GFS suggesting 14 more days at this point which would put PDX at a nearly unfathomable 24 days by the 30th.

    This weather is beautiful!

    Perfect.

  3. Definitely not any complaints about the recent weather. Warm sunny days with cool nights. Just about perfect. Things are drying out pretty quickly with burn bans going into effect a few weeks earlier than usual.

REALLY dry on the trails along the Willamette from the Hawthorne to the Sellwood (both sides of the river). Lots of brown grass and the feeling is it’s August rather than mid-June. And the river is remarkably low. Some Junes there has been significant mountain runoff, resulting in places along the waterfront pathways where the water overflows and shuts down those pathways (mostly around the Johns Landing area). I’d say the river is a good 20-25 feet below those levels this year.

    • My office overlooks the river in Salem, it is remarkably low. Lots of people floating by in canoes, tubes, and kayaks the past week or two.

My lawn looks like it’s August. I’m looking forward to the cooler temps the next few days.

Heading to Boston soon and I want to drive up Mt. Washington in Nes Hampshire when I’m there (home to the all time high wind gust of 231 mph). Has anyone been up there? What’s the drive to the top like?

    • David B. says:

I’ve been there. Can’t speak for the drive to the top because I took the train (which was steam-and-coal then).

It was October, and it was around 60 degrees with only the lightest of breezes. Amazing views of a crazy-quilt of colors of turning trees below. Everyone I’ve talked to about that visit says I was very lucky to have such good weather up there, particularly that late in the year.

    • Dringus says:

I’ve been there – have family in VT and NH. I’ve never made the drive personally but been a passenger a few times. Winding road. Takes around a half hour I wanna say.

A few patchy low clouds this morning with an afternoon high of 76. Now a warmup to the 80,s the next few days. Feels really great outside today. Peace

Larry, don’t know if you’re still checking in here but a funny thing happened to me today at the local lumber yard. I see a fellow contractor whom I haven’t talked to for a long while, so I say “what’s up?” He responds “Not me, got any ………..” (you know the answer).
So I says “Firesign Theater”! and he grins and says “You haven’t lost it all yet!” And I respond, “you can’t not get there from here”
    Old hippies rule!
