East Wind Season Has Ended

November through February is our “East Wind Season” in the Portland metro area and in the west end of the Columbia River Gorge.  Did it seem like a windy winter?  It was.  I’m working on a winter weather presentation and finished this graphic which makes the point:

The east wind disappears (mostly) in March because the land starts warming and we lose the inversions so prevalent in winter.  West wind starts to show up in the Gorge later in March and April as higher pressure tends to build offshore more often and fronts bring surges of the wind through the eastern end.

By April we only get gusty easterly wind with thermal troughs and much warmer than normal weather.  From June through August it only blows during heat waves and rarely gets very strong.

Don’t worry if you missed it this year…it’ll be back again in November!  Like an old friend…

I’ve been AWOL for some time, but where’s Poose?

  2. Tyler Mode in Battle Ground says:

Quite a change going from night after night of clear skies and frost to a low of 50 this morning.

Made a hike out to the still closed Johnston Ridge Observatory the other day…though there is not a spot of snow anywhere.

  3. Today’s 12z GFS was VERY wet for this weekend spitting out a crazy 3.14″ of QPF. I’d think this is overdone a bit. If that verified that would be insanely wet.

12z WRF looks real soggy as well

2/3″ in the valley according to that image.

    • chiefWright (Marquam) says:

The way I read the WRF chart, PDX is in the violet. 128 cin to 256 cin. Pretty sure that’s 1.3″ to 2.6″ in 48 hrs.

Whatever. It will be very welcome, though it will probably turn my driveway into a muddy mess.

  5. Hi Mark nelson.
I Would like to know when is there going to be any windstorm events coming in march? I would like to know what kind of a summer 2015 are we going to have in Portland Oregon?

  6. Lee says:

We have . 12 inches per hour for rain total ruin so fun in .12 inches.

  7. Jason Hougak says:

National Weather Map looks like boring weather, but wait Blizzard Warning on Mauna Loa and Mauna Kea on the Big Island of Hawaii. 5-8″ of snow with high winds, sounds awesome.

  8. Lee says:

We have 0.0 8. inches of rain.

  9. Ted Berry says:

I smell the sea salt air beckoning

A cool trough at the end of 00z run, it’s a start there’s still hope for a turn around.

  12. Lee says:

I planted pumpkins and brocoli today.

  13. I’m sure one of these days we’ll get a good setup for a bitterly cold east wind event in early March. The kind that could bring a big snow/ice storm to the Gorge and maybe some frozen precip at PDX too…All we need is for the classic retrograding ridge and cross-polar flow pattern to set itself up just right, for a late season arctic blast.

And we HAVE gotten “fall-like” east wind at least once or twice in late August. The most recent episode occurred for 3 or 4 days in 1992 when a chilly high pressure cell descended into Montana toward the end of the month.

I remember that one Karl. My first summer of forecasting after college. That was a fun winter (following) for snow and cold east wind!

  14. Longview 400 ft says:

I never thought I would look forward to some good heavy rain showers for a couple of months. But as we all know, we need it.

  15. Jake-(Gresham) says:

Took out the trash tonight and man it feels like early summer out there. Only thing missing was the crickets. O-o

    • Lee says:

      We have frogs lol.
      Will frogs croaking do?

Well, no rain is measuring on the weather station I have.
I stepped out side and, there are a few drips here and there.

I will have to wait till morning to see what happens.

    • Jake-(Gresham) says:

I wish hahaha! Nothing around here for frogs to live around in unfortunately. Suburbs are lame. >_<

My “in-Accurite” gadget, sez 0.10″ from the last “event” that started around noon. We’ll see what the more trustworthy rainbucket sez tomorrow morning….
