Ana’s Long Life

Ana lived about 17 days, from tropical storm to hurricane, then back to tropical storm, then hurricane.  Finally, Ana’s life ends tonight as a colder low pressure system fading into the British Columbia coastline.  Here’s a movie showing the entire path.  I only have satellite imagery for the last 7 days, thus the “fade on” partway through:

Seen a few lightning strikes tonight off to my west. Sounds like you guys are getting pounded with rain over there. So far not a drop here today. We should be getting some of that rain tomorrow before it dries out for the weekend and cools off more. El Nino looks to be coming on strong thus far, lets see if it does its usual stuff and calms down after the first half of winter…only time will tell.

  8. Benjamin (West Salem) says:

Lots of pounding on the roads here in Salem. Saw 8 big pounds over clogged drains on our way across town tonight. Steady moderate to heavy rain for a while now….

  9. MasterNate says:

Did this front stall out over the valley? Damn its wet!

    • MasterNate says:

The radar looks exactly as it did when I last wrote above! Our rain started at 2:30 yesterday and has been falling for about 17 straight hours.

  14. David B. says:

Really getting the sudden brief heavy showers up this way today.

  15. MasterNate says:

So much for the mostly dry day today. Has been mostly wet with increasing wet now arriving.

  16. Jason Hougak says:

Climate prediction center says it’s looking above average temps for the entire US. We are also above average for precipitation… not looking good for building snowpack unless above 8K’ 😦

  17. Joshua says:

Fun fact- today is the 20th straight day with at least a trace of rain at PDX. Let the moss and mushrooms grow!

  22. Mark, question here. Is the wind gauge on the Morrison Street Bridge there anymore? I remember it being used many years ago and some high wind speeds were recorded there. I presume its been long gone.

  23. W7ENK says:

    That’s a really cool video!

  24. WEATHERDAN says:

140 nights above 50 in Salem in 2014 so far. In 1974 during a year with a hot Summer the entire year had 64 nights that stayed above 50. What a huge increase in only 40 years. Coldest night in Salem so far this Autumn has been 43. Peace

  25. dharmabum says:

Talking about cold late October weather, I remember in the early ’90’s a real quick cold dry spell where the temp. dropped suddenly and we had a night or two out here in the Barton area down around 20 degrees. I lost a fair amount of nursery stock that had not hardened off yet. Also the vine maple leaves freeze dried that year on the vine and were a curious sight to see for the rest of the winter.

    • Boydo3 N. Albany says:

Another one in 2001? I was building a house for a local organic farmer (Spring Hill farms). We got a series of two or three nights in the low twenties/upper teens and he lost most of his fall crop of greens.

  26. Zero rain here this morning.
Looks like winter is coming to AK…

  31. Dave in SW PDX (235') says:

Cool! Interesting to see how Ana took a hard left turn just before hitting Kauai, must be the “Paul B” effect.

    • W7ENK says:

Hurricane Frances in 2004 did the same thing in Florida. It was initially projected to make a direct hit in Miami as a Category 2 or 3. If you look at the storm track, you can see it stalled, weakened, meandered for about 100 miles to the North before finally coming on shore. It stalled the same hour my plane landed at Fort Lauderdale. Miami only got a brush-by.

The Dome follows quickly, it anticipates.
      Anticipation denotes intelligence…

… I’m not sure how to interpret that. o_O

  32. Dringus says:

Cool! Do this yourself Mark or a video/weather intern?

    • Mark Nelsen says:

The line is autoplotted. All current season tropical cyclone info is always sitting in the weather graphics system. I only had to line up camera views, change the satellite picture (vapor), and change the time period requested.
