Happy Independence Day! Nice Weekend Weather

Did you know the 4th of July is the wettest day in July…on average?  More on that in a minute…but first we have a very nice weekend coming up.  Other than a weak weather system giving us lots of high clouds Friday and maybe even a coastal sprinkle, expect widespread sunshine and warming temps Friday through Sunday.

The average high temp for the 4th is 78 degrees, and the chance for getting measurable rain is 24%, which also happens to be the highest chance for rain of any July day!  Interesting eh?  Even more fascinating is that my kids, heading into 7th/8th grade, have never seen rain on the 4th!  Maybe we need to retire the old “summer starts after the 4th of July” statement?

Speaking of summer, temperatures warm through Monday or Tuesday as very high upper-level heights (lots of warm air) build over the West Coast.  It’s not going to be a sharp upper-level ridge, but more a very large area of warm air.  So we won’t see a thermal trough with the easterly wind like earlier this week.  Luckily that means no real hot weather; I think it’s unlikely we’ll get above 90 degrees.  And a high of 90 in Portland in early-mid July is nothing unusual; about 10 degrees above average.  Such a large ridge will keep the marine layer squashed quite low so we won’t see much morning cloud cover through at least Tuesday/Wednesday.

Summer 2014 is definitely here.

This warm spell has been absolutely delightful for me so far… upper 70s to low 80s each afternoon before the sea breeze really kicks in around 6 or 7 in the evening and cools everything off.

But my maritime smugness will soon end, gonna be in the Leavenworth area in the east Cascades for a few days starting tomorrow afternoon. Forecast highs 95 to 100 each day… yuck.

Already 70 in Salem at 9:00 AM. No Alto Cumulus today so going for 92 this afternoon. Same fz lvl as yesterday but no clouds ought to bring us a 3 degree increase in max temps. Yesterday was 89 in SLE so 92 seems on par for today. 90-93 tomorrow and Tuesday then 84-88 for Wednesday-Friday then 90-95 for next weekend. Warm nights ahead as well. Mostly 55-65. Peace.

Sounds horrible. Bring on October. Luckily, I will be in the Southern Hemisphere for the last half of July.

Oh Josh, you crazy! Maybe check out some local real estate action during your visit no??

    • Joshua says:

Unfortunately, the summers there are far worse than here (by worse I mean hot). Nuuk, Greenland is looking pretty good though- 75 degrees is the highest recorded temperature ever there. Heavenly.

Isn’t that the hometown of the Three Stooges? Oh, wait. That would have been Nuuk, Nuuk, Nuuk. (Sorry…)

HOT today @ 90′ in our SWPDX neighborhood!
‘Can’t believe that it was only 85’ @ the airport–although that reading may have increased officially when it was all said and done.

89 in Salem today. Seemed humid out but weather stats don’t support it. Low 90,s the next three days. Looks rather warm all the way out to the 20th. Maybe a little convective activity around the mid part of July. Lots of alto cumulus out today but still almost hit 90. Hope all of you are having a great Independence day weekend. Peace.

I really like to see the dry
Because the moles are gonna cry
With the lack of water supply
The ground is getting very dry
Hoping on this 4th of July
Their efforts to burrow will make them DIE!!!

My parents always told me the summer starts after the 4th because that’s usually when the snowmelt was done.
