Snowstorm Today! 9am Update

Just looked at all the latest models, radar etc…it’s going to be a LONG day at work.  Which means for all the rest of you it should be a fun afternoon and evening!
Right now:  Steady snow is south of Salem and a band of steady light snow across Vancouver and into the west end of the Gorge.  It’s 15 degrees at my house with snow blowing around.  It’s also 24, windy, and snowing at Newport…more like Maine out there today.  You can track radar all day here:
A snowstorm should be on the way for this afternoon for most of Northwest Oregon, including the Portland metro area.  Models are in even better agreement that a slug of moderate to heavy snow will arrive soon after the noon hour here in the metro area. Looks like somewhere between 2-5″ snow by the time it’s wrapping up this evening.  This will be a very cold snowstorm for us with temps hovering in the low to mid 20s; none of that 32 degree slushy snow stuff.  That means the liquid de-icer will be useless from what I’ve seen in the past.  And since for some weird reason ODOT still doesn’t use salt in the metro area (but other parts of Oregon now?), freeways will turn icy too.  So don’t get stuck on the way to or from work!
This will be our biggest (only?) February snowstorm since 1995.  It’ll only take about 2″ to do that.  Our forecast snow totals and timing of warnings is below.  The most severe weather will be in the west end of the Gorge with the strong wind creating blizzard conditions.
Albany (4am THU-4am FRI)
Salem north into Clark Co. (10am THU-4am FRI)
Central Gorge/Hood River (10am THU-4am FRI)
North and Central Oregon Coast (7am THU-MIDNIGHT)
Kelso/Longview/Cowlitz Co. (10am THU-4am FRI)
Western Columbia River Gorge including Multnomah Falls, Corbett, Cascade Locks (10am THU-4am FRI)
By the way, here are the snow accumulation graphics from the UW’s model (WRF-GFS) and our RPM model:
Note that both of these only include today’s snowstorm.  There will likely be at least a little more during the day Friday.  More on that AFTER we get through this.

anyone got a handle on round 2?

  2. vernonia1 says:

how do i post photos to kptv??

  3. vernonia1 says:

forgot to note 11″ on the hood of my truck in Vernonia (2 pics)

  4. Garron near Washington Square says:

Just took a walk to the store, and I’d say we easily picked up 1.5 to 2″ in an hour out here. My tracks were completely filled in, and where sidewalk and road had been when I went into the store, completely covered! Just a tip: DON’T USE HALL BLVD TONIGHT! Buses with chains were stuck on the hill, and every time the light @ Greenway and Hall turns red, people can’t get going again. And it was often down to no lanes of traffic as people got stuck and spun out.. I pushed 13 cars through the intersection before I finally gave up. Plan your route as best as possible to avoid hill stops, and think ahead where your next alternate is going to be so you don’t end up like the school bus on 185th and Hart road.

    • Garron near Washington Square says:

I’d estimate 4″ already here, coming down like crazy! My temp has continued to drop since noon from 21 to 17 D/F.

  5. Leftout says:

Finally getting more than a trace here in Eagle Creek.. Probably 1/4 – 1/2 inch

  6. Curtis C says:

The system for tomorrow afternoon/evening is gettitng juicier and jucier someone is going to score big in the valley.

  7. Max in Fairview says:

Pretty heavy snow coming down with the gusty wind now

  8. chris s says:

The snow really intensified here in West Salem about 5 minutes ago. Been snowing lightly all morning, but now it is dumping!!! 🙂

  9. Rob - Southeast Portland says:

MUCH heavier snow band moving into I-5 corridor and PDX metro. I bet that’s at least 1/2″ per hour snowfall rates.

So, now more Snow Friday Night-Saturday? Maybe. 12z runs kept the bulk south of PDX, but with both 18z NAM/GFS trending a bit north I think we need 00z data this evening/tonight before we rule that out.

    • snodaze says:

Could be… Nam was way south (and weak)… GFS had PDX metro in the crosshairs but split (bad)… I’m thinking I’ll just put my tin-foil golu hat on now.

    • Ryan says:

That keeps us cold though at least, right Rob? Maybe a Sunday or Monday event now?

    • Rob - Southeast Portland says:

I’d rule out nothing until Sunday night or so.

    • snodaze says:

Never mind the post above from me… we’re not speaking the same language… didn’t mean to confuse… I think Rob’s talking about current models… — I was talking about what just happened. — Hey, the average = a foot in the metro area… lol. Right?

    • Sapo says:

Currently we’ve been around 1″ per hour in Tigard, or around there. Now around 3/4″ per hour. Accumulating quickly, if it stays like this maybe 4″ more of snow before this is over.

  10. snow seems to be shifting up this way, been light all day, just a trace on the ground, sun peeked for a few wetting the roads (even though its 26) but the coastal radar shows a slug coming, maybe hit longview, or be just north enough to hit me. looks heavy.

  11. Sapo says:

1.5″ in Tigard, still coming down heavily. No end in sight yet, according to models looks like the end will be around 10 PM or so. I’d say we are looking good for another 2-3″

  12. WEATHERDAN says:

For any of you out there still calling this a boring Winter you just can,t be satisfied. 2 Arctic blasts in one Winter. 2 Snowstorms in one Winter in Western Oregon. An epic drought. Record rain and wind in September, -10 in the Willamette Valley in December. The Winter still isn’t quite finished and what a Winter it has been so far.I finally got the snow I wanted. Now I would like an early Spring. Oh by the way in South Salem it is snowing moderately with a temperature of 22 degrees. Our DP has gone from 5 to 20 since 9:00 AM and the barometer has been dropping steadily, Peace.

    • chris s says:

Ya I agree Dan, while its definitely been way too dry of winter, its been anything but boring considering the amt of events we have had. It has started to snow real heavy over here in West Salem as well in past few minutes.

    • Garron near Washington Square says:

Agreed WEATHERDAN. And wasn’t there some talk out there about another possible arctic shot in the models? So we may not be done yet. I have loved this winter, just cause I haven’t been stuck indoors with cabin fever. I’m off for a walk to the grocery store just for fun. I just heard that if you are out there driving, it will take 5 hours to get from Gresham to Hillsboro. So stay home, when you get there, and enjoy the snow…

  13. vernonia1 says:

just measured 8 1/2″ at my location in Vernonia. I am sure the folks up the hill from me have more.

  14. petecj says:

Whoever keeps posting about a back edge to the moisture obviously hasn’t looked at the radar. There’s no end on sight as of right now.

  15. runrain says:

Even heavier band looks like it’s poised to hit PDX soon. Temp has dropped again, now down to 16.9 deg. in Happy Valley. Still seeing kids walking home from school in shorts and tshirts! I ran on Marine Dr. yesterday afternoon and froze in the 30 mph winds, this with several shirts, couple of coats, etc. What are kids eating these days they can handle such cold!!

    • Garron near Washington Square says:

I think they are plugged into so many electronic devices these days that they don’t even notice it’s cold out. I’ve seen the same thing, and think dang that looks cold/stupid. Who sends their kids to school in shorts in minus wind chill conditions. My mom would’ve kicked my behind if I did that.

    • Dave in South Salem (500') says:

25 degrees here and wet roads. Reminds me of Denver. Things could get bad soon when that sun angle drops.

  16. AlohaWeather says:

Snow is getting a LOT heavier right now in Aloha. Looks like the heavy band is here.

    • Garron near Washington Square says:

According to Mark’s update the heaviest stuff PDX metro is still a few hours out. That being said, we might get some more Friday, but that’s it. No snow on Sat. for PDX, massive snow/ice storm heading for Eugene on Saturday.

    • AlohaWeather says:

The flakes have become Quarter sized and is falling at a faster rate than earlier. If it gets heavier… O.o

    • PeteCJ says:

Garron, don’t forget, 24 hours ago PDX was supposed to be bone dry today. I wouldn’t be so sure about Saturday at this point.

  17. Garron near Washington Square says:

3/4″ of snow in about 2.5 hours. Temperatures dropping from my “high” of 21 to 19 now.

  18. snodaze says:

looks like the back side coming in now… what you get in the next 3 hours… is it for today?

    • petecj says:

Ummm no, check the radar again. It’s more full than ever

    • Dave in South Salem (500') says:

Its weird how all of it is on the west side of I-5 right now. Maybe this will finally hit poor Woodburn/Oregon City!

    • snodaze says:

Yep Pete, correct… That’s what I was saying…. It’s the back end coming in… — “more organized”, solid precip (all areas)

  19. Steveplusplus says:

Mark just mentioned some of you on the news!

  20. runrain says:

Heavy, POUNDING snow falling right now in Happy Valley, JUST like 2008, only no real depth yet obviously (maybe an inch in the grass?) Flakes are big, temp 17.4 deg and down a degree in the past hour or so. The bigger flakes are settling in the last remaining bare spots on the street.

  21. Pat-n-GardenHm says:

    18 Degrees. Moderate blowing snow.
quarter to half inch….. Hard to tell actual depth.
Radar looks like it is not going to stop for awhile……
