2:45pm Update: Heavier Snow Moving In

We’re in continous coverage now on FOX12…a busy day!  Snow has been relatively light for most of the metro area so far, but a heavier band of snow is moving into the north Willamette Valley right now.  Basically everything is going according to plan.  Those of you that have seen nothing so far (Woodburn, Molalla, Silverton) will finally get some snow.

That means the snow should start adding up quickly between now and 7pm.   Looks like parts of the south valley are already up around 10″!  I still think 2-5″ is a good total for the metro area.  I am a little concerned looking at the visible satellite pic that there is going to be quite a dumping, maybe more than this forecast.

You can clearly see the solid clouds (with heavier snowfall) north of the low pressure center…west of the coastline.

I also see the upper layers of atmosphere cooling off once this low passes to the east. The next low looks to be more southern so I wouldn’t think that the upper layers would warm as much since it would be more southern OR instead of central coast. About 36 hours left of exciting weather in my eyes and hope this all made up for the doldrum mid-winter. This after 7 weeks or so of ” Oregon Summer” weather, I really think this arctic outbreak made it all worth it. Enjoy the weather tomorrow evening.

  2. Model Rider says:

Looks like Eugene could get another quick inch with this band in next 10 to 15 min if it doesn’t end up being zr again.

  3. Jake-(Gresham) says:

It’s still snowing here along with the wind and still holding at 18 degrees since morning. Traffic is light now on the main roads.

  4. Andy says:

Very heavy snow in Jefferson, another 2.5″ since 7pm.

  5. Model Rider says:

What I wanna know right now that no one is talking about but should be, is the east winds. Are they still and for how long, going strong or what? I believe that is the metros best chance for the winter weather to continue. People should start posting wind strengths and directions now.

  6. Joshua used to be in Lake Oswego says:

Temp up 2 degrees in the last hour.

  7. JT says:

Back to snow here in Shedd.

  8. Taylor says:

Winter Storm Watch issued for Portland Metro Area and other areas.

  9. Sapo says:

We’ve had nonstop snow since 10:45 AM here, heavy at times. WRF-GFS looking pretty good for snow tomorrow, precipitation peaking 7-10 PM and continuing into Saturday AM. It has 2-5″ snow accumulations in Portland, 00z NAM looking good for snow as well.

    • Ryan says:

Just need the Euro and we can lock it in!

    • Garron near Washington Square says:

If this next one takes the slightly further north track the GFS is thinking, Salem to Portland get buried, Eugene south might get ZR or just rain. Cant’ wait to see how the next round of models takes this, and what the next NWS statement will say.

  10. Muxpux (Castle Rock 175') says:

Soooo, marks FB post about Salem/woodburn getting hammered shows a slug of moisture at the coast poised to hit us, but it doesn’t show on the other radars. Hmm

  11. Andrew (Beaverton, OR) says:

Is it just my untrained eye or does it look like the radar is once again starting to fill in around Portland…

  12. boydo3 N Albany says:

The snow train has started up again here.

  13. Tom (NE Portland) says:

Looks awfully like freezing rain for Portland Saturday evening if the 00z GFS verifies.

  14. Taylor says:

Still snowing in Clackamas. Quite a bit of snow here. Not sure how much though.

  15. geo says:

Looks like the east side of the portland metro is scoring with the snow.

  16. Andrew (Beaverton, OR) says:

Snow picking back up here in Beaverton, slightly over 5 inches now.

  17. Lurkyloo says:

    Winter Storm Orion. Haaaa!

  18. paulbeugene says:

    Looked at NAM output:
I have a hard time believing we will be 6C at surface in Eugene in 24h.
An awful lot of QPF, 1-1.25in/24h.
Lots of potential for trouble in form of heavy snow, icing

    • Curtis C says:

It tracked slightly more south of what the 18z says.

    • boydo3 N Albany says:

But it could happen. Right now Waldport is at 42 and Newport is 32. What, 10 or 12 miles apart. Wind direction is critical right now and tomorrow.

    • boydo3 N Albany says:

Also, temps have warmed a bunch overhead. Hoodoo summit is warmer than my house 22 vs 19 here. SW winds at summit…

    • Curtis C says:

The warming of the atmosphere was modeled and then modeled to come back down as the next storm approaches.

  19. Eric R. says:

Kelso, Wa. currently has 5″. It has tapered off a little but consistently has been snowing since 2pm

  20. alohabb says:

This is far from over. Just a break in the action.

  21. Curtis C says:

00z NAM looking good for a major valley snowstorm tomorrow. Heavier precip than today.

    • Tom (NE Portland) says:

Too bad it’s the NAM, which has proven unreliable over the past few days. I’m guessing Mark is leaning towards the Euro which shows most of the precip well south of Portland.

    • Curtis C says:

I’m in Eugene so I hope it goes with the Euro’s solution.

  22. vernonia1 says:

hope this works…last measurement before dark….

  23. vernonia1 says:

Mark…I had to email pics to you. …

  24. Kenn Bartley says:

Our community dock on the Columbia River in Camas is sinking sue to weight of ice! I have a photo!!!
