Fire Weather In January? A Weird Winter

The dry winter continues; the next chance for rain is Tuesday…maybe.  Other than that it appears we’ll be mainly dry through the end of the month.

The weak weather system moving through the region tonight and Wednesday morning gives us cloud cover and just a few sprinkles.  Then it’s back to strong offshore (easterly) wind through the weekend.  Due to the very dry forest in SW Oregon, the Medford NWS has issued a fire weather watch (in anticipation of a red flag warning) for Thursday evening.

I don’t think I’ve seen that in my 20 years forecasting here…we need rain!

Significant pattern change, but not to snowy or cold. A very wet regime begins after day 8 as energy digs in the Gulf of Alaska and the block is pinched off. It is then undercut with southwesterly flow arriving. Impressive rainfall totals of this comes to fruition.

    …. East Wind Update ….
Things are going about as planned, although from looking at the OTH-GEG and TTD-DLS it is very apparent we’re seeing more downslope than gap today. We did muster a Wind Advisory as I had been suggesting may be issued. My peak gust is 42.4mph so far.

    As of 3 PM
    TTD-DLS: -8.6mb
    OTH-GEG: -16.4mb
When you see the cross cascade gradient nearly doubling the gap you know you’re going to see widespread easterly wind likely throughout all of PDX/VUO metro.

From the NWS: WE HAVE RECEIVED
A COUPLE OF REPORTS OF IMPACTS FROM THE WINDS AND HAVE ISSUED A WIND ADVISORY FOR THE METRO AREA. ONE BEING A LARGE TRUCK THAT WAS BLOWN OVER ON ITS SIDE WHILE TRAVELING OVER THE 205 BRIDGE.

This wind today is packing more of a punch than the last 2 wind advisories

Weather anomaly is connected to the water-temp anomaly is connected to the second law of thermodynamics is connected to the origin of the universe. AMEN.
