Forecast Bust in Progress: Snow Day in Metro Area!

6:45am…

If you are about to head out the door to work or send the kids to school…don’t!

It appears all of our models may have been wrong since the main snow band seems to be setting up a good 50 miles farther north than we expected.  Snow is falling through a good chunk  of the metro area and there’s no reason to think anyone couldn’t get a quick inch in the next few hours.

Way too risky to head out into a morning commute as roads start to turn icy/snowy in many areas, you may get stuck on the road.

After the disastrous December 2009 evening commute when we said it would do very little, I promised myself I wouldn’t hesitate next time it appeared we were way off.  I think this may that time.

The sun is now shining in Downtown Portland, 27 degrees.

  2. Andrew (Beaverton, OR) says:

Very light snow starting once again here in downtown, VERY light.

  3. WEATHERDAN says:

Really curious here in South Salem. When the radar showed it snowing on us it didn’t. Then when the radar showed no snow it started snowing. What gives? So far I have about one inch It is currently cloudy and 26 with a strong North wind.

  4. pdxgeologist says:

Looks like some wrap-around hitting east side.

has anyone ever seen Jim Cantore on the weather channel doing a live report & experiencing thunder snow? He said it has happened twice & boy does his geek side come out when it happened. Was like a little kid. Fun to watch 🙂

You should’ve been there in Seattle when the (true) Arctic Blast rolled in, December 18 1990. Temps dropped from about 34 to 12 over the course of 2-3 hours. Pounding snow and north winds and yes, lots of lightning strikes. Good times (as long as you weren’t trying to drive)!

Many of you have seen this link. But I’ll post it again as it gives a very good picture of whats going on at the 850 mb level (about 5500′) in the central cascades.

Sadly enough I also live under the dome, Lake rd. Un Milwaukie and it’s really depressing down here no more snow, it barely snowed at all to begin with anyways. I wish Milwaukie Would Just Get Something Decent For Once!

    • W7ENK says:

Hey, we made out like bandits in December 2008! I had 23″ of snow and 1/2″ of ice. One of the highest totals in the whole metro area!

But unfortunately you’re right, that’s the exception for us, not the norm.

I’m curious what my neighborhood looks like today. I’m just North of you near the King Rd. Safeway. I guess I’ll find out when I get home, this snow isn’t going anywhere.

    • JJ78259 says:

W7ENK my old neighbor just told me she had a dusting on Wake Court but you have wonder with approaching storm next week with all this cold air there won’t be an epic Ice Storm. I still remember the ice storms that just kept the east wind blowing and the temps did not moderate as the weathermen said and the warm up kept getting postponed. The ice just kept building and transformers popping!!

    • the dome has completely collapsed before….but it takes a mighty force to do so!…1968 comes to mind, as does 64…

I wish I could join the party, but my phone is out of commission today and I can’t access FB from work. 😥

This loop suggests the low has stalled or at least slowed a bit:

How’s the latest Euro looks for Sunday and next week? Any changes?

  10. paulbeugene says:

Snow increasing in intensity now, 4″ on ground in west Eugene at my office.

    • Curtis C says:

I got just a little bit less than that 3 blocks from U of O. What do you think we’ll end up at? I’m thinking around 6″.

  11. DShaw says:

Total—massively bad forecast for Vancouver……11:30 last night…somehow every model blew it…To sound so sure and confident and have it all go south (or North!!!) is beyond me….took 3.5 hours to get to Tualatin from east vancouver—–chains would not have helped….but a better forecast would have…..hope folks stay safe….

  12. braniff1 says:

Why is the NWS predicting a high of 40 for PDX? Error in typing?

    • Andrew (Beaverton, OR) says:

Has to be, it likely wont get above 30 today, currently 26 at PDX.

    • Mark Nelsen says:

28 would be a much better bet!

      • Ryan says:

What’s your thoughts on this afternoon Mark? Low still spitting moisture north or is south valley still the target?

    • Andrew (Beaverton, OR) says:

Mark, what are your thoughts on snow chances in PDX metro area for the next 2 hours? It appears as if the radar is starting to slowly fill back in finally. Hard to tell with some of these bands if there is really that much moisture making it to the ground though.

    • Dave in South Salem (500') says:

The radar seems to be off. It was showing moisture when there wasn’t any snow falling and now the radar shows no moisture and its still snowing…

    • vernonia1 says:

reporting 3 for our low tonight. I hope that is a typo!
