A Nice Going Away Message

October 4, 2013

There was a hidden message in the Portland NWS Forecast Discussion this evening…can you find it?  Look down the left side:

  AREA FORECAST DISCUSSION
  NATIONAL WEATHER SERVICE PORTLAND OR
  811 PM PDT FRI OCT 4 2013

.SYNOPSIS...HIGH PRESSURE WILL DOMINATE WITH DRY WEATHER EXPECTED
THROUGH SUNDAY AFTERNOON. WITH BUILDING HIGH PRESSURE OVERHEAD WILL
HAVE TO WATCH FOR THE DEVELOPMENT OF NIGHTTIME VALLEY INVERSIONS
ACROSS PORTIONS OF NORTHWEST OREGON AND SOUTHWEST WASHINGTON. EXPECT
NIGHT AND MORNING FOG ACROSS INLAND VALLEYS BUT SUBSIDENCE SHOULD
KEEP THE COAST AND MOUNTAINS SUNNY AND MILD OVER THE NEXT FEW DAYS.
YET ANOTHER WET PACIFIC FRONT WILL BRING THE NEXT CHANCE OF RAIN
ON SUNDAY NIGHT AND MONDAY...WITH UNSETTLED SHOWERY WEATHER LINGERING
  UNTIL TUESDAY...POSSIBLY LONGER.

  &&

.SHORT TERM...THROUGH MONDAY..LITTLE CHANGE EXPECTED IN THE OVERALL
FORECAST WITH AN INVERSION PATTERN THROUGH EARLY SUNDAY MORNING. OUR
RIDGE WILL STRENGTHEN TONIGHT AND SATURDAY...KEEPING THINGS COOL
UNDER THE INVERSION AND WARMING UP AREAS ABOVE THE INVERSION LAYER.
IT APPEARS THAT FOG AND COOL NIGHT TIME TEMPERATURES WILL CONTINUE
TO AFFECT INTERIOR VALLEYS TONIGHT AND SATURDAY WITH THE UPPER RIDGE
CONTINUING OVERHEAD. 850 MB TEMPS WILL RISE TO AROUND +15 DEG C SAT
AFTERNOON ACCORDING TO THE LATEST 12Z ECMWF AND GFS RUNS. THIS SHOULD
KEEP TEMPERATURES WARM IN SOME AREAS...PERHAPS 70S IN THE HILLS...AND
EVEN SOME COASTAL LOCATIONS AS WELL.

PERHAPS THE GREATEST FORECAST CHALLENGE IN THE SHORT TERM WILL
INVOLVE HIGH TEMPERATURES FOR THE INLAND VALLEYS ON SATURDAY. WITH
AN 850 MB TEMP NEAR +15 DEG C...TEMPERATURES COULD CONCEIVABLY REACH
NEARLY 80 DEGREES WITH FULL MIXING. HOWEVER...THIS IS VERY UNLIKELY
ON SATURDAY DUE TO THE STRONG INVERSIONS...MOIST GROUND...AND
MORNING FOG IN PLACE FOR OUR INLAND VALLEYS. HOWEVER...IF ENOUGH OF
AN EASTERLY GRADIENT DEVELOPS THIS COULD RESULT IN AN EARLY BREAKOUT
NEAR THE GORGE. THIS COULD YIELD TEMPS WELL INTO THE 70S FOR PORTLAND
AND VANCOUVER IF EVERYTHING COMES TOGETHER JUST RIGHT. ACROSS THE
NORTH...WILL LEAN TOWARD THE WARM SIDE WITH 70S. ACROSS THE SOUTH...
DO BELIEVE IT WILL BE A BIT COOLER WITH HIGHS IN THE 60S.

BOTH ECMWF AND GFS FORECAST MODELS CONTINUE TO BRING RAIN TO THE
ENTIRE FORECAST AREA LATE SUNDAY NIGHT OR EARLY MONDAY. THE LAST
SEVERAL MODEL RUNS SHOW THAT...ASIDE FROM THE COAST AND PERHAPS
THE COAST RANGE...IT APPEARS THAT MOST OF THE PRECIPITATION WILL
FALL AS SHOWERS BEHIND THE FRONT MONDAY. ONSHORE FLOW BEHIND THE
RETREATING FRONT COULD ALSO ADD SOME OROGRAPHIC ENHANCEMENT TO QPF
IN THE CASCADES. GIVEN COLD 850 MB TEMPERATURES ITS NOT A STRETCH TO
EXPECT A LITTLE SNOW IN THE CASCADES. HOWEVER...SIGNIFICANT SNOW IS
NOT EXPECTED SUN NIGHT/MON. AFTER 15 YEARS OF FORECASTING I`M FINALLY
DONE. THANKS FOR YOUR FRIENDSHIP AND LAUGHTER. LIFE IS WAITING.

Down the left side it says THANK YOU FRUITCAKE PIANO MAN AND BEST FRIEND.  And of course the last two sentences explain it.  Looks like someone is done working there!

A lot of people found the hidden message on the NWS Anchorage discussion earlier today, referring to the ridiculous U.S. Government shutdown.  It says PLEASE PAY US:

I can’t blame them!  They are working with no immediate paycheck in sight.  In past shutdowns workers were paid afterwards, but that doesn’t help if those NWS folks have bills to pay now does it?  What a dysfunctional House of Reps, and government in general.

Another Nasty Letter

October 4, 2013

Every once in awhile I get a fun email.  This one came in yesterday:

“…can we cease with the Forecast for the unstoppable now? These ads are now boring and too childish for a TV station supposedly manned by adults. You have gotten your mileage out of them many months ago and it is time to move on. Lets make these stupid nonsense ads “Stoppable.”
Also you can also cut down the time that you spend on the weather. All we really care for is what the weather will be like tomorrow and a week ahead not all the other garbage that you toss in. The time could be better spent with more news stories. Actually all we really need is the graphics shown to show us if it is going to be sunshine or rain and the temps for each day. When we want a full weather forecast there is the Weather Channel which goes into the weather in detail…”

  xxxxx@aol.com
Obviously I’ve changed the email address too.  I DO actually like the creativity of turning “unstoppable” into “stoppable” in that one sentence.
In the next two sentences the viewer suggests we spend less time on weather and more on news stories. Apparently he didn’t get enough tiger cubs, two headed calves, and sleeping bus drivers last night.  Alright then, we’ll order up more assaults, men trampled by bulls, hunting murders in Grant county, and school fires just for you buddy!   I’ll just throw up the metro forecast and 7 Day and be done in 30 seconds.
Now in the last sentence he really goes off the deep end.  When he/she wants a full forecast he’ll find it at The Weather Channel???  Ummm, when is the last time you saw those folks spending a couple minutes talking about Portland weather?  Maybe during the snow storm of 2008…maybe.
