Off For A Bike Ride

Friday, August 2nd…

I’ll be in NE Oregon and SE Washington from the 3rd-10th of August.  My sister convinced me to participate in the Oregon Bicycle Ride.  It’s a 7 day road cycling tour; very similar to Cycle Oregon.  But someone has decided it’ll happen in the heat of summer.  I’m extremely pleased we don’t have a heat wave coming up this next week in the Pacific Northwest.  The first day looks like this:

I’ve been riding quite a bit to train; we’ll see how it goes.  Looks like about 350 miles of riding in 5 days (2 days off) from Athena to Joseph, then to Lewiston, Dayton, and back to Athena.  That’s a lot of sweat.  I should come back either quite fit or very tired, or possibly both.

No blog postings until the 12th.  But feel free to discuss weather below.

GFS mm5 has a fairly wet Friday evening into Saturday for the Willamette Valley…hopefully not mesoscale system of nimbocumulus castratus without lightning.

  3. paulbeugene says:

Zero point Zero precip streak continues, now 40 days and 40 nights in Eugene.
16th day of 90 plus. By this time in the summer of 1967, there were 9 day above 90F. There ended up being 31 days above 90F in the summer of 67 here in EUG.
We will probably get day 17 here of 90+ tomorrow but will fall short on Wednesday with all the high clouds/convective debris from SW/S Central OR.
Thurs PM is first opportunity for t storms in EUG, with better chance Fri/Sat. No severe storms anticipated. Will be impressed if dry spell makes it through this weekend intact (assuming moisture from S arrives as expected).
Don’t see any 90’s beyond this week, through mid August…just some pleasant upper 70s and 80s.

Bought a STIHL chain saw last week. 954 reasons I just thought I might need it this fall. Mother nature has fallen way behind on pruning.

  4. BoringOregon says:

Nothing will happen mid week. I bet the on shore winds will blow the, storms of to the east after they reach about, Salem south and some might make it to the, mt hood area then blow of to the east. Bet we could see more big thunder storms tell the end of September!!

  5. WEATHERDAN says:

As of 4:30 PM on Monday Salem has reached 92 degrees. This is the 13th time so far this summer to have reached 90. In Eugene it is 16 days. In Portland 6 days so far. Maybe 93 or 94 in Salem Tuesday, then 90 or 91 on Wednesday. Then 84-88 degrees Thursday-Monday. What a great Summer so far.

  6. runrain says:

A virga storm’s coming, a virga storm’s coming! At least according to the NWS.

  7. runrain says:

NWS sounding a bit interested in thunderstorm possibilities mid week. They are going to address in the afternoon discussion.

  8. W7ENK says:

350 miles in 5 days would kill me! I’m happy with the 48 I achieve if I manage to ride my bike into work and back just 3 days in a week!

Good luck to you, Mark. Stay safe!

Still looks potentially good for convection midweek over much of Oregon, details as to exactly when/where still up in the air but general pattern more favorable for convection west of Cascades than what we saw last week. As to be expected, best potential for strong storms will be over areas east of Cascades. There should be a fair amount of moisture with this.

  12. BoringOregon says:

Wow, that’s a long bike ride. I use to ride into, Gresham all the time back in high school, good luck mark!! any chance of storm’s this weekend, look’s like some good clouds building over mt hood now.!?!

    • dharmabum says:

      Hey B.O.

For two days we can hardly see the mountain, lots of lift over the cascades, maybe one or two will drift down to the valley. We have company from Ca. and would so much like some entertainment from the weather!

    • BoringOregon says:

hey yeah, looks like today was a little clear out but still some good looking clouds over the cascades maybe mid week huh !!

  14. That ride is gonna be a bit of a challenge for sure. I live on a hill and it’s always a puff coming back up the hill to home. And it ain’t nuttin like where Mark is going.

  16. paulbeugene says:

12Z GFS has more moisture, overall more favorable pattern for W Oregon convection at end of work week.

  17. paulbeugene says:

Looks good for another convective pattern for Oregon on Thursday/Friday of this week.

    • paulbeugene says:

Would like to see a bit more moisture though. Moisture mostly well above 700mb, thus if anything happens it will be high based convection with not a whole lot of precip. Euro model looks better for convection for folks living PDX-SEA whereas GFS suggests best action farther S, probably S of Roseburg-Willamette Pass-Blue Mts.

This could end up being a more dangerous fire set up compared to midweek last week, as warm to hot/dry weather resumes soon thereafter, unlike the current baggy/hangy trough leaving marine/onshore flow to areas w of Cascades.

Zero point Zero Zero precip streak in Eugene currently at 37 days.
