Vacation Time

I’ll be on vacation (Clark Griswold style to Montana) through Monday, June 17th.  I’ve scheduled one post for late next week, but otherwise no postings.  There isn’t much you need to know anyway…just cooler and cloudier during the upcoming workweek.

Looks like “Tornado Time” in McMinnville today!

Wow. I don’t usually think of Fairbanks as a hot-weather destination. Those folks surely deserve it, though. I was there in the summer of ’78. The hotel room we stayed in had the thickest curtains I’d ever seen — to keep out the midnight sun in the summer and to keep out the cold in the winter. Panned for gold at “Alaskaland.” Bucket list item is to someday drive the Alaska Highway. Anybody done that?

Sorry for the ramble, but it’s very SLOW here these days!

Happy that I don’t have to water the garden today … woohoo!

Did an 11 day trip last week through Yukon and Alaska. I went to Glacier Bay, Skagway, Whitehorse, Haine Jct, Tok, Delta Junction, Fairbanks, Denali, and Anchorage.

    • i had a friend make the drive from Anchorage to Fairbanks, in the middle of winter. i believe i posted about it. i think it was in the -40’s at the time. crazy.

  3. Punxsutawney aka HIOPHIL in Hillsboro says:

.53″ of rain here around 5pm. All came down in about a 1/2 hour’s time. Was certainly coming down in buckets at my work in Beaverton around that time.

    • Archangel Michael2 says:

Nothing here or at Dad’s work in Wilsonville.

Cloudy for the day all but for 1/2 hour in the early afternoon hours and partly cloudy up in Wilsonville where Dad works. Not a single drop fell from the sky at either place.
Clearing to the west and chilly. If it clears out tonight and stays that way unseasonable low temps will surely follow.

Records lows for Salem in June go down to the low-mid 30s despite the average low being close to 50F at night.

It’s too bad we don’t record sunshine hours unlike Europe does.

    • Punxsutawney aka HIOPHIL in Hillsboro says:

Showers seemed to go around me all day at work with just a sprinkle or two until just about 5pm, then “Wham” was it coming down. Also a nice looking funnel cloud on the trailing edge of the shower.

Or I should say a nice bit of scud or condensation around an updraft that looked like a funnel. Not rotating! Not a funnel! No burrito pics please!

If anyone has a flexible work schedule they might want to look into going east of the Cascades next Monday. Check out Pendleton’s forecast discussion. Strong to severe storms possible.

Who knows? maybe as time gets closer the thunderstorm forecast will expand to cover us right here in the valley and we wont need to travel for exciting weather. The link below is for Pendleton’s forecast.

  8. From the NSIDC…….

Lower than average temperatures were the rule this past month for both Greenland and Alaska, while temperatures across much of Siberia were above average. Temperatures over central Alaska at the 925 hPa level were 4 to 5 degrees Celsius (7 to 9 degrees Fahrenheit) colder than usual, making this one of the coldest springs on record for cities like Fairbanks. These low temperatures can be linked to slack winds over central Alaska that resulted in very little mixing to get rid of the cold air. However, the end of the month saw much higher temperatures, reaching more than 80 degrees Fahrenheit (27 degrees Celsius) in Fairbanks.

Because of the low temperatures, ice on the Tanana River, which runs through Fairbanks, Alaska, broke up on May 20 at 2:41 p.m.—the latest date and time on a record which extends for nearly a century. Ice break-up has been carefully recorded at the town of Nenana, about 70 kilometers (44 miles) downstream on the Tanana River from Fairbanks, by timing the tipping of a large tripod erected on the river ice. This is a matter of some importance for Alaskans, as there is a large statewide lottery based on picking the exact time of ice break-up. In most years, winning this lottery requires picking the time to the precise minute of tipping. Congratulations to Warren and Yvonne Snow, for your excellent climate forecasting (and on having a wonderful last name)!

  11. .LONG TERM…WEDNESDAY NIGHT THROUGH SUNDAY…THE UPPER LEVEL TROUGH
RESPONSIBLE FOR THE COOLDOWN AND SHOWERY WEATHER MIDWEEK IS EXPECTED
LIFT INTO THE NORTHERN ROCKIES BY FRIDAY. THE RESULT WILL BE A BRIEF
WARMUP FRIDAY WITH TEMPS BACK UP TO NEAR NORMAL…AND A DIMINISHED
THREAT OF SHOWERS. HOWEVER…MODELS ARE BEGINNING TO COME INTO
RELATIVELY GOOD AGREEMENT THAT A SECONDARY DISTURBANCE COMING DOWN
FROM THE GULF OF ALASKA WILL DEVELOP INTO SOME SORT OF CUTOFF LOW OFF
THE OREGON COAST BY THE WEEKEND. DEPENDING ON WHERE THIS SYSTEM SETS
UP THERE WILL BE A RENEWED CHANCE FOR SHOWERS…AND POSSIBLY A LITTLE
MORE INSTABILITY IN S-SE FLOW ALOFT. 12Z GFS/ECMWF/GEM ALL HINT AT
SOME POSSIBILITY FOR THUNDER SAT AND/OR SUN…SO DECIDED TO GO ALONG
WITH OUR NEIGHBORING OFFICES AND ADD A SLIGHT CHANCE ALONG THE
CASCADE CREST OVER THE WEEKEND. WEAGLE
I hope this comes to fruition! 🙂

  13. Last night the forecast high for The Dalles was 79, exactly the same as Portland. Needless to say that forecast was WRONG – our high today was 88.

But we had a low of 56, for 32 degrees’ diurnal contrast. And this was on a pretty windy day, even by June standards. Some gusts up around 40 mph last night, and probably close to that during the day too. The wind died off just before dawn allowing us to drop to 56…but somehow we jumped from 83 to 88 early this afternoon in one hour, despite strong wind? Hmmm….
