Easter Weekend: Enjoy!

Sunday AM Update:

Saturday’s high of 77 in Portland was our warmest March day since 1994!  And quite close to the warmest March day ever (80).  Enjoy your Easter Sunday!

Friday Evening…

Here’s the latest forecast…we will likely tie or break a record high tomorrow and be quite close to a record Sunday.  The records at PDX are 74 tomorrow and 71 Sunday.  Luckily models are backing off on bringing much cloud cover up into northern Oregon for Sunday afternoon.

March will “go out like a lamb” won’t it Sunday?

Easter2012_3Day

I considered turning off comments for the weekend to force us all outside, but decided against a “nanny-blog” solution.  Plus, from today’s (lack of) activity on the comments, I can tell that won’t be a problem.

I will however be disappearing from the online world this weekend though!

49 / 39 in Klamath Falls today. Nice comfy, cloudy weather, a little break from the sun.

Also had a decent rain event here as well, from roughly 10pm last night through 9:30am. Gathered 1.23″ total.

A rainfall record was set today, 0.80″ since midnight, which breaks the previous record of 0.74″ set on 04/01/1974.

    • Timmy_Supercell (Klamath Falls @ 4200') says:

This 10 degree diurnal change is very insignificant compared to the 41 just 2 days ago! Wild swings.

    • Lurkyloo says:

Hey now. That’s an April Fool’s right? I was pullin’ for you for a second. You all need that water down in those parts. I’ll still put on a wish-cap for you. Summer’s comin …

Looks like there’s quite a bit of lightning coming up the valley?

Clouds to the South of Downtown Portland are looking awfully dark…

    • Mark Nelsen says:

I hate you…it worked on me. Just turned to Joe and said “there’s thunder in the Valley right now?”

    • W7ENK says:

      Oh, that’s golden! 😆

    • Mark Nelsen says:

I had just been in about 5 minutes and hadn’t looked at any data yet.

    • Punxsutawney (aka HIOPHIL) at work by Sunset High elev ~280 says:

Thought that was a lot of lightning given there were practically no radar echos between here and Medford (a few light blue spots maybe) down there. So double checked Mark’s page and what? Nothing there! Thought maybe it was a glitch.

    • gidrons says:

I almost fell for it too.

    • Garron near Washington Square says:

Wait! I think I hear some rumbling!!!! Oh, just leftover’s from that green burrito. Yep, fish on! Went to the radar map to check. My mom used to pull the old “IT’S SNOWING!” thing to see how fast I could jump from the bed to the window on April fools day. Good one Erik!

    • W7ENK says:

Hahaha!! Well, somebody had to do it. I’m glad I could be of service! *bows*

    • Greg Carstens says:

I fell for it as well Mark. Erik is that good at posting things that it makes us all really think. Good job Erik, 😉

  8. Sifton says:

I’m hoping it’s not the case, but got a bad feeling this nice run (that ends Thur.) might not come back for quite awhile again………

  9. runrain says:

This weekend must have been a once in a hundred year event: two consecutive days above 75 deg in the month of March and BOTH on the weekend, with a cooling off on Monday. Dropping an Easter Sunday in there as a bonus and it becomes an almost unheard event! I wouldn’t even complain about some upcoming rain right now because we are that much closer to summer and won’t have that interminable wait that we usually do for some warm days. Speaking of which, much more clearing out there right now than anticipated and, with a relatively warm start, could be another great day in the offing!

  10. My Vancouver station hit 80 on the 30th, which eliminates my earliest from April 7th, 1996.

So now my range in high temps for March 30th go from 80.3 down to 44.4 back in 2010.

  11. archangelmichael2 says:

Hi. Mark. Please let this post thru since this *heatwave* is special.

High of 79F (Saturday) at 3:45pm, and a high of 78F today at 2:30pm before cumulus debris looking clouds came thru blotting out the sun; on/off most of the evening quickly dropping temps to a more reasonable 64-62 area. My low this……..I guess now yesterday morning was a toasty 53F the warmest minimum in March I can remember.

So far this weather pattern reminds me of this but it’s a month too soon to tell if we are in a *trend* like below.

    http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/March_2012_North_American_heat_wave

Maybe we are having those conditions from last year shift on our doorstep for a change which April will be boiling hot with unusual temperature records being obliviated to hell.

    0.59″ at FLYNN PRAIRIE(1543ft)

    • That 80 in Hood River is very interesting. It’s pretty rare for that area to be the regional hot spot. I can only assume there must have been downsloping east winds from the Sevenmile/Mosier/Wasco Butte area, that warmed Hood River but didn’t benefit The Dalles. At the same time, the beginning of the marine push west of the Cascades prevented those warm east winds from reaching the Willamette Valley or Portland.

  14. PDX Weather Nut says:

Amazingly dry first 1/4 of the year by Portland standards. It’ll be record breaking once all the numbers get in.

  15. PDX Weather Nut says:

Reached 78 here today. Love the sunshine just a lot of sniffling and sneezing with all the pollen …

  16. WEATHERDAN says:

Funny how all those worst springs ever comments seem to have disappeared from this blog. But then those same comments came out just before last summer. Then one by one they faded with the summer heat. Today they play the first game of the MLB season. Go Dodgers and a happy Easter to all. Oh by the way at 3:00 PM in South Salem it is sunny and 75 degrees.

    • archangelmichael2 says:

It’s called being hypocrites or having/setting double standards which ever term you prefer.

I wish more positive comments about this mini heatwave would come.

  17. runrain says:

We’re one degree ahead of yesterday and 2 degrees from the record for this date. All the spring blooms look like they’re on steroids. Next weekend is going to feel kind of chilly in comparison. Just nice to look forward to a much smaller gas bill in April.

SHORT TERM…WHAT A DIFFERENCE A YEAR MAKES. THE FORECAST HIGH TODAY FOR PORTLAND AIRPORT IS 75 DEGREES…A LEVEL NOT REACHED UNTIL APRIL 21 IN 2012 AND JUNE 3 IN 2011. WHILE THE AVERAGE FIRST 70 DEGREE DAY IS SOMEWHERE AROUND MARCH 30…THE AVERAGE HIGH FOR PDX DOES NOT REACH 75 DEGREES UNTIL THE FIRST DAY OF SUMMER…AROUND JUNE 21. SO IT IS SAFE TO SAY TODAY WILL BE UNSEASONABLY WARM…IN FACT IF PDX REACHES THE FORECAST HIGH OF 75 DEGREES IT WILL BREAK THE RECORD FOR MARCH 30…WHICH IS 74 DEGREES SET IN 1942.

Mark, on your weather for Friday night you said all the radar clutter was migrating birds taking off after sunset. It appears to me that if the completely covered radar scope were birds this would certainly shut down all air traffic from PDX and all of the NW Oregon. What gives?

    • Mark Nelsen says:

I don’t remember the exact size/number of birds, but I do remember a presentation that mentioned you would only need 2 flying geese in a square kilometer to set off one return (green echo point). It’s not as if the sky is jammed with birds, but there are plenty out there flying around.

    • Garron near Washington Square says:

I’ve always wondered if it jams the PDX airport radar the same way we see it on the weather one?

  36. Greg Carstens says:

Looks like 65 for me tomorrow here in Southeast Tacoma according to the NWS. I beat today’s forecast high of 59 and had 62. For Sunday there might be an outside chance at making 70 here but I think the NWS is being conservative and went with 69 for my area. I’ll take it.

    Happy Easter Mark.

  37. Jesse-Stevenson says:

  38. Timmy_Supercell (Klamath Falls @ 4200') says:
