Record Rain; Wettest Hour Ever in May This Evening!

History has repeated itself…we just broke the all-time May  rainfall record again on the Saturday night of Memorial Day Weekend.  Remember 2008?  A big thunderstorm on Saturday evening.

Portland Airport reported 1.02″ rainfall from 6:53-7:53pm.  And most of that appears to have fallen in the final 45 minutes of the hour.  Check out the observations here.

The rainfall is in green on the right side.

.97″ of this fell in 36 minutes from 7:17 to 7:53pm!

Compare that to the record sheet here:

http://www.wrh.noaa.gov/pqr/pdxclimate/pg83.pdf

We have broken the all-time one, two, and three  hour rainfall record for May this evening (.93-.95″ on May 24, 2008)

We MAY have broken the all-time one hour rainfall record (1.03″ on September 7, 2010)

The National Weather Service will probably put out a statement after a bit more rain collects in the next hour.  For example, 7:10-8:10pm rainfall could easily be higher than that 1.03″ all time record.

Not a drop in Hillsboro while some of you got pounded. Really weird!!

  2. Jade says:

That was wild last night! I have seen thunder, lightning, wind and rain many times before, but something about last night was different and almost scary! The sky was a funky color and the wind was just eerie sounding!

  3. Garron near Washington Square says:

Ok, that one woke me up!!! My cat was hiding in the bathtub, and rain was coming in under the eves of the roof through the window I’d left open. I sure feel sorry for all the campers that got soaked this weekend! Let alone all those whose houses were damaged. But, man alive!!! For a “dry weekend” we sure under achieved….

  4. Mark, I’ve seen nothing in the forecasts I’ve seen in the last two days about the possibility of afternoon thunderstorms. Did you see this coming?

    • chris s says:

Its was in pretty much everybodys forecast for Friday, and Saturday. Nws was pretty much all over it starting like late wednesday I believe, so ya it was definitely in the forecast!!! 🙂

    • Mr Data says:

I concur. I saw nothing in the forecasts too. Nobody on here was even talking about it till it suddenly happened.

    New Storm Video/Photos/Timelapse

Note the video file names have when lightning strikes occur.

The last file on the 5.26.12 page is a timelapse that shows how much rotation the storm created and a little surprise too. If you look closely, you can see a slug going up my aspen tree (center). 🙂

I also updated my 5.25.12 gallery with pictures of the trees that were struck by lightning near Hudson’s Bay High School.

  6. Had .92 ” “recorded” but the rain was running over the top of the rain gauge, so who really knows. Never seen it rain so hard.

  7. Sifton says:

‘Yesterday’, for 45 min. was unlike anything I have seen in my 40yrs. Sure glad I cleaned da gutters!! The best thing was watching it roll in & roll out in under an hour!! 1 evening I won’t forget, unlike 2008???

  8. Mr Data says:

In fact I was hoping tonight would be slow to put up some weather pictures which Mom put in my Walkman that I still haven’t sorted thru.

We have a lot of changes especially since Dad is likely about to be layed off work due to new ownerships who are screwing around the employees left and right.

  9. Mr Data says:

Nothing here. In fact I was expecting a slow day on the blog as I wasn’t keeping up with any weather reports but lol and behold a couple of posts appear like magic.

Mark, I would say the forecast was blown pretty bad the last two days.. Friday and today. The forecast was supposed to be dry both days and we get all time record rain in 1 hr. Thats a bad forecast

  12. W7ENK says:

    Interesting thing I just noticed…

Last year, about this time (May 28), we had a thunderstorm move through Portland from North to South.

    o_O

  13. W7ENK says:

Wow, that was impressive! I got video, editing now…

  14. lurkyloo says:

What the heck just happened? That was something else. Oh. Wow.

  15. Richard Hodges (SE 160TH & Burnside) says:

I just talked to my brother, Bob, who lives over by Jefferson High School in North Portland. He said that this storm ranks up there with the biggest, as far as rain goes in a short time, that he’s ever seen. He said the ground was like a river and that the water almost came inside his back door and in his house.

  16. 0.77″ here between 7 and 7:30 tonight. Rain gauge might not have kept up too well though. My CoCoRaHS gauge shows 0.92″ for the same time period.

  17. pbo9 says:

Wow, lightning struck my house. But there’s no damage. Scary- that was the loudest moment of my life. Thanks to my neighbors who came over to see if everything was ok. At least an inch of rain here in north Portland.

    • William Johnson says:

im sorry but i highly doubt lightning struck your house for one if it did there would be damage thats for sure my house had been struck by lightning in 2005 and there was a lot of damage yuou mostlikely had a close strike that looked like it but there is no way a house can get hit with no damage at all .

    • pbo9 says:

There’s a black stripe down one side of my house and 5 neighbors watching the storm witnessed it. They all came running over to see if everything was alright.
I didn’t see it I was at the back of the house and all I saw was a flash and a huge crack.

    • W7ENK says:

      Pictures?

    • WhiteEagle - Garden Home/SW Portland says:

Dude, give the guy a break… such naysayers in this crowd. If he says lightning struck his house, and others saw it, I’d put money on him telling the truth.

    • Sifton says:

I’ll take a piece of that WhiteEagle!

    • W7ENK says:

I believe him… I just want to see pictures!
