Things are working out well this afternoon with mainly rain showers falling below 1,500’ west of the Cascades. At times some snowflakes have been mixed in, but all temps are between 36 & 43 degrees across the metro area and even the top of our transmission tower is above freezing now.
NOW-7:00 PM:
Rain picks up, turns steady, could briefly mix with snow anywhere, but probably mainly or all rain. Breezy too. Temps near 40.
7:00 PM – 11:00 PM:
The rain backs off to light showers, mixing with snow up above 1,000’ later. No sticking in the metro area, but turning snowy over Coast Range and Cascades. Temps 35-40.
The Rest of the Night & Morning Commute:
Rain and snow showers, snow could briefly stick anywhere by the time we get to the morning commute; very similar to what we saw Saturday. Everyone will at least see snow in the air for GDO. Higher elevations get 1-3”, mainly near and above 1,000’.
Chief Meteorologist Mark Nelsen
Mark, how comes the low is off of Wa coast and is still producing such impressive easterly gradient? It is at -5mb now. Is it due to the high in Utah and or BC?
Still a heavy rain snow mix sitting at 35°
Just got home from work, currently 36 here with a rain/snow mix.
I’m surprised you don’t have all snow since it looks like solid stuff on the camera at 1,800′
But most importantly, will Corbett schools be delayed tomorrow?
Close call with the wet & heavy stuff. If only 1/2″ in Corbett and 5″ up Larch Mtn. road I bet not.
A tornado roughly ~8,000 miles wide, travelling at ~300,000 mph… Made of fire! 😯

I don’t get it. I sure ain’t seeing what they’re seeing on Radar. What am I missing?
Here in the western gorge about 15 miles east of Washougal at 1,150 ft. – snowing hard occasionally lightens up for a minute and then comes down hard again. Was only sticking mostly to the old snow left from last weekend and not much on bare ground but suddenly I got an inch of new on everything and it’s 31.5 degrees. Huge flakes and fun times.
So what’s the chances of late start for Corbett tomorrow?
This storm as all the good stuff. Wind, cold, rain, snow. Maybe some hail and thunder and lightening. What’s not to like?
Now, up here, on the other hand…
…the air is cool – almost cold – 33.0.
Down 1.5 degrees in 45 minutes.
Lovely, wet snow coming almost straight down.
Not that it ever goes up you understand.
38.5 at Newport on the bridge.
Rain, w/ slight snow mix – temp 34 at the school (32 at my house) and winds are still ESE @ 27-32. A lot more East wind that I had heard was coming our way. Have things changed that much in the past few hours?
No, it’ll blow for a few hours and then disappear quickly 7-10pm. Even Corbett gets a SW wind overnight.
…now it’s getting fun, wind is kicking up, snow is coming in sideways, temp down to 32.5…
heavy mix here
Mixing in Beaverton. 37 degrees at 300 feet.
Is it snowing back home at 32.6 Mark?
I think so. It’s all rain here at the station in Beaverton. Steph said she couldn’t find splats on her windshield.
Rain snow mix here in otis
Moderate rain in Milwaukie.
40.5F, down from 45.1F at Noon o’clock.
Splat test = –1
GOLU = -1
Street lamp test = -1
WPBTWSOITY = -1
Total accumulation = -4 (so far)
You’re a funny man Erik (I think that’s your name).
Milwaukie?!?
Hell, it NEVER snows in Milwaukie.
I thought everybody knew that.
It’s the constant hot air.
Aye.
Down to 37 at PDX now and dropping.
Low on sat looks to be comin in way more south than models projected two days ago. May prohibit south winds more? anyways getting really strong winds from the ese now. Strange for any time of year here. Hope there’s a monkey in the wrench
Like the trend!

That east wind seems to be hanging on even in places like HIO that actually just switched to an east wind from south wind earlier. Is TTD reporting snow?
http://www.wrh.noaa.gov/mesowest/getobext.php?wfo=pqr&sid=TTD&num=60&raw=0&banner=off
back to rain at TTD
When’s the front get all the way thru us?
Nice looking front on sat imagery…should be one of the more squally cold fronts to impact the Willamette Valley/OR Coast in some time….Apex of front aimed at Central OR Coast. 6-10pm should be interesting.
I agree, it sure looks active doesn’t it?
Love squally cold fronts!
Won’t it start an east wind if it comes into central Oregon?
Down to 38 at PDX, no clue whats going on up at my place. Here in downtown i could make out some brief snow mixing in with the rain earlier.
I must’ve blinked…
Have to be careful about that. Blink too many times and you might miss the whole event.
…snowing hard, 33.6…
Where are you at? and what elevation?
Scappoose Hills – snowing presently and on and off most of the day. Temp has dropped to 32.4 and getting sticking snow for the first time of the day.
I am about 900ft give or take 50 feet. We seem to be in an odd location that gets more snow than others.
So far it has been all snow today, no rain mixed in, but not sticking around. Right now it’s really coming down.
East wind driven snow down the gorge /reputedly/ sw port.
Will change overnight to snow above 500ft.
Thanks Mark for the update!
Good Rain/Snow mix @ the Troutdale Airport – 50 ft. elevation.
currently a r/s mix right. Temp dropped from 42 to 37 degrees in the last 45mins. Should be interesting to see if I get any snow as I am usually just on the snow line.
Pouring rain and snow in Battle Ground. Add the 20 mph winds and the dropping temps and it isn’t all that pleasant outside!
37.8 here
Same thing up here in hockinson , with a temp of 37 also.
I’m all in for a Stray Albino Donkey…mixed with snow!
Really like winds that respond quickly!
NATIONAL WEATHER SERVICE PORTLAND OR
236 PM PST TUE FEB 28 2012
.SHORT TERM…THE MODELS REMAIN FAIRLY CONSISTENT WITH THE APPROACH OF THE NEXT STRONG OFFSHORE FRONTAL SYSTEM…SPEEDING IT UP A TOUCH
COMPARED TO PREVIOUS GUIDANCE. WINDS HAVE BEEN SLOW TO COME UP THIS AFTERNOON ALONG THE COAST BUT SHOULD RESPOND QUICKLY IN THE NEXT HOUR
OR SO. THE FRONT APPEARS TO BE VERY DYNAMIC WITH LIGHTNING DETECTED JUST OFFSHORE AND THIS CONVECTION SHOULD AID IN THE DEVELOPMENT OF
HIGH WINDS. HIGH WINDS IN THE COAST RANGE LOOK MARGINAL FOR NOW BUT WILL LEAVE THE WARNING INTACT. GUSTY WINDS CAN ALSO BE EXPECTED IN
THE WILLAMETTE VALLEY AS THIS SYSTEM APPROACHES THIS EVENING.
Nice! That stampede looks like it’s making a bee-line for NW Oregon. Would be nice if it held together, but I doubt it will cross the Coast Range.
Rain snow mix in Longview right now
Sunday might be a nice day, partly sunny and in the high 50,s. But more cool rain next week. No valley floor snowfall though. I just keep my mind on the fact that some nicer spring weather is just weeks away. This is the price we pay for our nice summer weather. Besides without the low level snow Mark can go home to his family instead of explaining to Portland how 1 inch of snow is going to paralyze the city and cause civilization to crumble for ten hours straight. KPTV can broadcast their usual if it bleeds it leads newscast.
Mixed rain, freezing rain and snow on Vancouver Heights – started around 1300. Some white showing on neighbor’s roofs. Air temp is 37-38 degrees at 14:30.
freezing rain at 38degrees eh. Very interesting. Doh
“freezing rain at 38degrees”
That’s not possible.
I think he meant sleet? I should hope so, anyway…
WOW! God Da** Oregon (GDO)! No need to get angry Mark! 🙂
Heh…
Looks like another period of “too cold to enjoy the outdoors” but not cold enough to snow.
+1
Fork holding firmly…
