A Big July Snow Plow Job

Check out these pictures, courtesy of Glacier National Park in western Montana.  They show the hard work the last few weeks attempting to get the Going To The Sun road opened for summer.  The extremely heavy winter/spring snowfall and cool late spring and early summer have made it into a huge task this year.  The picture above was taken today!

Looking at Mesowest records for 2011 so far, this mornings low of 70 at Alkali Flat near Ontario was the first overnight low in the 70’s for any station this year so far.

Lets just get this summer done with and move on to winter!

Man those cat drivers clearing the GNP road have nerves of steel!

At least theyaren’t sweating. Had a very cloudy day with a sunny start to the morning and the clouds all blew in around 9:00am and my parents were the first to see it.

They said it just came in all at once from the north which they said was an odd direction and I agree.
Most marine pushes with thick clouds are usually from the SW though right now there is a clearing to the west with the sky an orange color but it’s almost impossible to see due to obstacles.

I wonder when the foothills will get their first dusting of snow? Early September?

  4. Model Miss!

Wow…forecast was around 75 today and I managed a 63.5…and that was at 12 this morning. My afternoon high was 63.4.

On top of that a peak wind again today of 23 mph. Much stronger push of marine air than forecast and some pretty cooler upper level temps as well.

That being said, it feels like a pleasant fall day today.

heres my video on these clouds

  6. Kyle From Silverton says:

I wanna know if 2000-2005 was sunnier then 2005-2010 so far?

This is for Portland and the valley. The valley as 2010 showed can be much sunnier then port. Portland.

  7. Timmy_Supercell (Klamath Falls @ 4200') says:

Nice cumulonimbus development out to the east for a good chunk of the day, unfortunately the severe warned storms are almost out of my viewing area by now, but it sure was fun!!! Some of these tops must have reached at least 30,000 feet high.

Call me crazy but I’m kind of enjoying this cooler weather. Sunny, 70 temps and NO rain is perfection for me. Sure I’d want hot weather for swimming but the rivers or too high, fast and cold as of current anyways.

    • Joshua in Lake Oswego says:

You’re not crazy- you’re very sane. My house got to about 82 degrees inside yesterday and that wasn’t even a ”hot” day. Today is nice!!!

Great pic Mark. On July 20, 2000 I was at Logan Pass and hiked off that summit to Hidden Lake. What amazing scenery there.

  16. Garron says:

Wonder when the first snows will fly up there this year? My guess, late August. Guessing if we are going into a cold PDO regime, we will be seeing a lot more summers with late skiing seasons, and earlier starts.

  17. I’d love to see a winter here in the NW where we don’t have a cool spring, but there is 10 feet of snow at lower Skibowl in July!

  18. Still plenty of snow at Sunrise Lodge, Mt. Rainier ….

    Opening day at Sunrise…..

  19. Kyle From Silverton says:

I personally think we are going to have temps near avarge this summer with precip slightly below unless we get some T-storms that bring rain.

Salem just hit 90F for the very first time of the year.

As they say right after the 4th is summer for Oregon! Right on time.
