This is your chance to sound off! Spring “officially” ends about a week from now, although meteorologically we consider spring the months of March-April-May. Either way, it still feels like spring but it’s wrapping up. There has been a vibrant discussion on the blog off/on the past few months about this spring and of course I editorialize about it frequently. So what do you think? I’ll leave this poll open for 24 hours and you can comment below as well:
I just posted a fresh posting about spring weather down below…I’ll shut off the comments on this one.
I noticed that today, despite temps only getting to 74-75, my apartment started to get a little uncomfortable, warm enough for me to turn the AC on for an hour or so. I think the culprit is the high sun angle; just to the south is another two-story building, tall enough and near enough to keep the south wall shaded for about half the year if not more.
If that’s the case then I might not have to worry about the AC come early October when we get our last 80+ temps of the year. Unless, of course, it is preceded by a solid week or so of chilly temps (60s and low 70s) that destroy our summer heat adaptation.
Here is a table showing the first 13 days of June. Temperature’s running at exactly normal (61.0 mean) for the month so far at PDX. Most notable thing here is that we have now strung together 10 consecutive nights above 50 for the first time in 2011. These warmer nights are great. No need for heating our homes for a while.
one of my tomatoes just hanged himself.
The darn slugs ate everything I had planted. I might have half a tomato plant left and I think half a carrot leaf, that’ about it. Arrrgg.
Cool springs are Cool
It has been horrible. Here’s to the 18z bringing back summer next week. Or maybe its just another mirage?
I’m with you Brian. I’m a 3rd gen Oregonian. Web feet, moss between the toes, mushrooms growing out my shoes but…. I still like to warm up and dry out and get some sun for a few months before the 9 months of winter starts up again. I like looking forward to October after a nice dry, hot summer. Not to mention the fact that my work is in construction and slogging thru the mud gets really, really old.
Hey, bgb. The 00Z GFS told me to say hi.
Oh no…I don’t want to look. I just saw your comment Jesse. Is it like the end of Planet of the Apes? “you won’t like what you find!”
Lol, nice reference. It’s actually decent. Some temps in the 80s here and there in the long range, and just one cool trough. No heat like the 18Z, though.
This is all in the long range of course, short-mid range looks as cool as ever.

It didnt back off too bad from 18z
Ulimately, any season your’e not six feet under is a good season. Our ‘average’ hight right now is 72. But that temp is rarely reached. It takes a lot of 80’s and 60’s to reach that ’72 average’. We are in the 60’s side. I’ll take THIS over the record highs elsewhere. ( But, I would like a bunch of tomatoes this year)
This “Spring” weather has affected me BIG time emotionally. Each day it’s cloudy, I am usually in a horrible mood. Normally when it rains in the summer, I like it. I doubt that will happen this year. It seems like I have whined way too much here and on Facebook, but I have had it with the faux Spring.
First!
I’ve liked it lately, but that’s only because I live in The Dalles now. We normally get unbearably hot and dry in July and August. But I sympathize with all who had to suffer west of the Cascades.
Now if we can just get the weather to go backward this summer (cool and cloudy on the east side but warm and sunny west)! Hahaha…
If I lived in The Dalles I wouldn’t mind unusually wet springs…a long hot and dry summer is always on tap.
I’m curious what your definition of “long summer” is, Mark…
