Thunderstorm Over Westside

A very heavy thunderstorm has developed right over the top of Beaverton at 8:10pm.  I can hear the rain pouring outside and my co-workers berated me for letting them keep their windows down.  Of course I put mine up just in case of this.  It’ll move slowly east-southeast towards SW Portland the next 1/2 hour.

  1. Admitidly not strictly weather related, rogue waves also known as freak waves are towering and spontaneous ocean waves that are born far out at sea, and are a danger even to large ships. In oceanography, they are more precisely defined as waves whose height is more than twice the significant wave height (SWH), This measurement is dependant on observing a series of waves to determine the largest third of waves. Therefore rogue waves are not necessarily the largest waves found at sea; they are, indeed, large waves for a given sea state.

Had to drive to the donald exit south of wilsonville on I5 to help a friend who blew a trailer tire at 9pm from mall205 south lots of lightning and some brief heavy rain and a few splats from some hail? lots of action to the south and east got a great show all the way down and most of the way back. When we were leaving there were some wicked clouds over clackamas town center to points south and east.

Question: how are lightning strikes counted an mapped? Is this all by observation and people reporting them or is there some more automated way of doing this? I see them reported on the various maps (such as on the live radar) and always wondered how that works.

Warm and muggy, lightning and thunder all around, very light rain… the smell of cottonwoods and damp sweetgrass is nearly divine. 🙂

I hear ya Erik. The air gets really fresh during a thunderstorm, another thing nice about it.

  9. Looks like some new storms backbuilding into Gresham…

  10. Josh (Gresham) says:

Okay that was cool, we drove out Burnside onto 26, then took 212 towards Boring and at that point it got intense. Drove into a rainstorm along with around 30-35 lightning strikes at least. Also the temp dropped 8 degrees from my house to there. All in all, great storm

  11. Copper says:

    How long will this persist?

  12. Rob "Wrath" S.E. Portland says:

Wow perhaps the fastest I’ve ever seen a storm develop in western Oregon. From nothing on radar to a strong t-storm up to 66.0dbz in the matter of 11 minutes!

Getting some cloud to cloud lightning here with some heavy drops of rain. Sporadic,

Lightning activity here is over bornstedt road and cascadia subdivision.

Hey guys, long time reader, first time poster.

I just got back from driving down to Damascus and there is some pretty bad small stream flooding. The parking lot was almost under water. I was going to drive closer, to Barton, but the rain was coming down really hard, so I though it probably wasn’t a good idea to drive on those windy country roads at near 0 visibility.

Still seeing some flashes and hearing faint rumbles at my Gresham location.

  15. EmzinTigard says:

Enjoying the ‘light show’ right over us in Tigard earlier.. watched the storm over McMinnville blow up as well. Love this season!

  16. W7ENK says:

There’s lightning everywhere! I’m seeing flashes up to the North, off to the West, to the East, down to the South… man, I feel like I’m in Florida.

I don’t think its over for tonight, it’s still warm and muggy on the East side…

    Lovin’ it! 🙂

  17. Timmy_Supercell (Klamath Falls @ 4200') says:

Looks like lightning down here has stopped. I’m now cutting up the videos and it should be up on YouTube soon. 🙂

  18. Rob "Wrath" S.E. Portland says:

Been outside watching all of the flashes and bolts. I see new structure developing right overhead into Gresham that might turn into a storm. Also radar shows 2 new cells possibly developing about 4 miles west of Gresham. Hmmmm.

    • AdamInAumsville says:

Looks like a cell trying to develop near Albany as well. In between everything!

  19. Austin (Cornelius) says:

Nice thunderstorm that’s been happening in the past 30 minutes. Mostly cloud-to-cloud lightning but some pretty good cloud-to-ground lightning at times, nice downpours too. This is in Happy Valley.

Watching lightning to my SE now, and hearing the distant thunder. Also, can see a new cell forming over NE/SE Portland in front of the more distant cell. I expect this to start producing in the next 15 minutes or so.

BEAVERTON, Ore. — Highway 217 northbound is closed at Scholls Ferry Road due to high water at Hall Boulevard, Washington County officials said.
Traffic is backed-up for miles. A thunderstorm passed over the area Sunday, but it’s unclear if the storm led to the water in the roadway.

  35. Runrain says:

CG over Hwy 212 south of Happy Valley. Must be some strikes there.

And, umm… believe it or not, that’s rotating over the Clackamas McMinnemans right now… 😯

  40. Austin (Cornelius) says:

Sudden gust of wind just now…no ominious clouds in my path…so there really can’t be a reason……right?
Or is there some unseen convection to my nw?
