2011 Mississippi River Flood

May 10, 2011

This is the worst flood in almost 100 years along the lower Mississippi River.  A great graphic below from the Times-Picayune newspaper and Army Corps of Engineers shows what happens next as the massive flood crest moves through Louisiana the next two weeks.  It’s pretty straightforward; millions of acres will be flooded and either New Orleans goes under water or (far more likely), smaller towns will be inundated for weeks, possibly displacing thousands of people.  This graphic explains the huge diversion of water that’s going to take place beginning this weekend.  Interesting reading if you’re into weather and flooding.  Click for a larger view.
