Wind & Weather Podcast

Some wind excitement this morning (at least in the forecast).  I was busy with Easter activities yesterday and didn’t even notice, but apparently there isn’t much to get excited about anyway.  A low pressure system just swung by to  our south, and we’ll get a breezy west-southwest wind here in the Metro area this afternoon.  No high winds or damaging wind though.  If the low would have gone by to our north it might have been a different story.  A very wet week to end April on the way too!  There

Brian MacMillan and I put together a podcast at the end of last week for your listening pleasure.  It’s 30 minutes of weather center chat, kid’s questions, and Stephanie Kralevich yelling in the distance.

Give us your feedback; we are considering doing these on a regular basis.

our weather in the pacific northwest is a lot like going to a store that is going out of business. There are all these great deals on things but you just so happened to get there when all the good stuff that you would have bought is gone so the fact that you can get 90% off a pair of bright orange nike sneakers really doesn’t matter. For us we are having a record few number of 60 degree days and yet doesn’t really mean much because the opportunity for recold snow and cold is gone and past. Why does this not happen when it really counts like in january? I am going to keep asking this question until we get a satisfying answer!!!!!!

    • …Doesn’t mean much?…do you have a heating bill to pay?..do you have a garden spot that shows no sign of being tillable in the near future???…records, whether they are warm or cold, long or short, wet or dry, affect MOST of us, no matter what time of year they happen; they are out of the ordinary, they affect what would be normal planning for this or whatever time of year, and whatever they are, they deserve a little respect for the situation that creates them…
Why didn’t it happen in January?…ask the planet, and be patient…one of these years you’ll get what you seek…grasshopper… 🙂

Just listened to the podcast: Mark, you should wear a green bag over your head on Halloween – or better yet, a green beanie!

Weather news from the East Gorge. There was 0.60″ of rain so far today (as of 6pm) at DLS. Compare this to 0.59″ at HIO, 0.66″ at PDX, and 0.28″ down at EUG. We’re up to over 1.4″ for April so far, with three or four days left when we could pick up some more. I’m pretty confident we won’t see the hillsides brown out until well into June this year! That is, unless May turns out to be really warm and dry.

  4. Kyle From Silverton says:

A new out of several systems coming in right now.

  5. Kyle From Silverton says:

Wow! Several rounds of heavy rainand even some small hail to add to the boot!

  6. Sandi (Wilsonville) says:

Enjoyed the podcast Mark. Suggestion would be to use the kid segment music just at the beginning of that segment only. Otherwise, two thumbs up 🙂

  7. Wow heavy sideways hail in Gresham right now.

  8. Timmy_Supercell (Klamath Falls @ 4200') says:

I’m surprised I still have power! The noises I am hearing inside my house are incredible. It’s almost like I’m living at the edge of a cliff up @ 15,000 feet or something!!! Latest observations only read 31 mph, but there is no way in hell it is that low. This sounds like 55 mph AT LEAST to me!

    • Timmy_Supercell (Klamath Falls @ 4200') says:

One gust I recall hearing outside must have been around 65 mph. But then again most observations update every 45-60 minutes. If there were records kept every minute of the day, you’d probably see lots of 50+ and some 60+

    • Timmy_Supercell (Klamath Falls @ 4200') says:

To cover this point I’m making, let’s say these winds sound much stronger than the ones I had on March 13th when the severe thunderstorm approached me, before dissipating. And those winds were around 60mph not to mention.

  9. WhiteEagle - Garden Home/SW Portland says:

Trees getting jostled around pretty good here in far SW Portland. I’d estimate gusts 35-40mph.

I get it…it took the NWS lowering the advisory to get the winds cranking!!! 😉 :p

  10. By the end of the week, we will have a system where you’ll be able to download this from iTunes and have an easier-to-find link on our website at kptv.com.

Let us know what you would like to hear and what subjects you want us to cover. We want to get some cool weather guests on as well.

    More details to come. Enjoy!

Possible Hail and maybe t-storm moving into Clark County/Vancouver metro. Mesoanalysis shows weak instability SBCAPE 250J/kg, MUCAPE 100J/kg, LI +1 to 0, and no CAP..

  12. Timmy_Supercell (Klamath Falls @ 4200') says:

Gotta love that good ‘ol “404” page. How come that only happens with certain people like ‘ME’ and a few others?

  13. Kyle From Silverton says:

This was only a test. If this was a real emergency you would not be reading this message.

We now take you back to our regularly scheduled program.

  14. Cherie in Vernonia says:

Thanks Mark….link works fine now 🙂

  15. Rob "Wrath" S.E. Portland says:

The low went south of PDX>… My post early this morning that I was not sure if the low would track far enough north seemed spot on unfortunately.

  16. Mark Nelsen says:

I think I fixed the link.

Try again folks, plus we’ll get it on our main kptv.com weather page soon too.

  20. At least Dropbox has a cute 404 page…

  21. We had strong gusts earlier and the power was out for 1 1/2 hours here in Mill City/Gates. It’s back on now. Still blustery though.

  22. Carol (Stayton) says:

    (link won’t work)

  23. Timmy_Supercell (Klamath Falls @ 4200') says:

    Darn im 4th….

Anyways Mark is right, this low pressure system is too far south for you guys to get what I’ve been getting. Right now constant barrages of gusts up to 40 mph. Could have a few up to 50 mph at times, although on the observations nothing higher than 36 so far.

Sorry for the bad news for all you northies! Better luck next time.

  24. Carol (Stayton) says:

    Me either…

  25. Cgavic sandy Oregon 1,100 ft says:

I’m down in troutdale from sandy… Up there have gusty winds at 30 in troutdale, it’s completely still, no wind.

That shows different climate zones right there.

  26. Sandi (Wilsonville) says:

Got a 404 error on that podcast link.

  27. Eric H. (300') Troutdale says:

It’s not downloading for me Mark.
