Snow Picking Up: 5pm

From our ODOT cameras it appears that snow is starting to stick now in the metro area as the radar screen fills in.  We ARE getting some evaporational cooling too…temps are near/below freezing in most of the Metro Area.  If you don’t want to drive on snow or ice you should get home quickly in the next couple of hours.

  2. Jacoby (SE Gresham) says:

Temp has risen to 30 from 29 the last couple of hours.
Nothing falling anymore, but still have gusty east winds; and there’s a nice layer of sleet/zr on everything.

    New blog post

  4. In Banks says:

    My post was to Tag.

  5. pappoose in scappoose says:

Before the nights out we may get blipped off the screen one at a time. If we get a surge of moisture that goes to freezing rain, power outage time will begin.

    • jake at the lake says:

now yer talkin my language pappoose:)
nuttin better then power out in the middle of an ICE STORM!
time to go chop some more wood.

    • W7ENK says:

So far, no outages, and things are starting to warm as the Southerlies are beginning to kick in. No worries. 😉

  6. Josh in Puyallup says:

Question. I have no way of looking at the upper level Temps up here. Is the Dew Point a good way of telling? My DP is 14F and a temp of 31F. Can it be just plain rain with a DP below freezing? Or does it have to be above?

  7. TAGinGresham says:

Alright guys, enough is enough! Would the handful of you who insist on trolling each others posts, knock it the heck off already! The rest of us are sick of it, and you all are looking like a bunch of idiots. How about none of you reply to the others posts, and let the rest of us enjoy the blog for what it is supposed to be about, the WEATHER. Those of you claiming to be adults sure aren’t acting like one, and none of you are respecting this blog. Please just stop!

    • Rob "Wrath" S.E. Portland says:

      +1 Well said.

    • In Banks says:

I’ve seen you post like this several times now. I don’t get it! You are speaking for the masses and yet I don’t see a problem nor do I have a problem. Please don’t speak for me. I like this blog!

    • Dave_in_Troutdale says:

      TAG/All,

Don’t even recognize them. Let Mark just ban em and that’ll be it.

My temp holding steady at 29.5 here close to the Sandy River in Troutdale. East winds still blowing pretty good. Had mainly a mix of sleet and snow, no real freezing rain just yet. When does that next band of moisture come in?

    • EmzinTigard says:

      amen!

    • Diana - Mt. Scott says:

Thanks, TAG for your efforts to get them to stop. I thought you had succeeded awhile ago only to have them start up again. I love this blog and enjoy everyones input, but the petty bickering is getting old! I’m pretty surprised by who’s involved in it, these are people I usually admire and look forward to hearing from. Please, if you can’t say something nice….well at least neutral, just don’t say it!
My temp was as low as 26.5 but has gone up to 28 currently, dp is 25, steady NNE wind at about 10mph with gusts to 30.

  8. stevied (North Portland) says:

I notice the Enchanted Way ODOT cam by Salem got up to 32.3F about an hour ago, and is now down to 31.4F. Cold air lingers.

  9. k5mitch says:

No snow just z/r got a few pellets at first but now just freezing rain…

I have a feeling the next wave of precipitation is going to glaze Gresham / Troutdale pretty bad.

993mb low due west of Long Beach, Washington. 1030+mb over Columbia Basin. What’s most surprising to me is he occluded front offshore. That may delay any warm air push at the surface much longer than previously expected. Also wondering if PDX-DLS may near a peak of -12mb.

  12. Brad says:

Salem and Eugene stations showing 32-34F now. South wind coming in rapidly south valley. Troutdale DPs up 2F in the last couple of hours. Now 26F.

I don’t see how the entire area isn’t above freezing by midnight.

  13. PaulO says:

PDX – DLS up to 10mb!!

  14. BrandonInNWSuburbia says:

Just got off work and walked home from Streets of Tanasbourne to near Westview High. A little sleet, some sprinkles…all of it very light. Roads/sidewalks are just damp.

  15. GoBlazers says:

So, who thinks the warm up happens before the morning commute?

  16. Temp/DP spread getting closer….34.4° now with a Td of 29.0

  17. PaulO says:

Upper tower temp up one degree 5pm – 6pm. Other two virtually unchanged.

  18. sweetone Rockcreek PDX says:

31 degrees dp 26. It snowed enough to dust ground then sleeted. Now it is doing nothing. Hope to get more precip before bedtime.

  19. Doppler Dave (NE Portland) says:

There is a light glaze on all surfaces, including the street, in my neighborhood. Temp is 31, dewpoint 26. East winds continue to blow strong here. The next round of precip could really glaze some areas of town up a bit more before the warmer southerly winds kick in (which does not look anytime soon at the surface, maybe aloft).

  20. ridgefieldzen says:

dropped another temp deg to 31 and DP down 1 degree also. 100′ untechnically wetlands and lewis river and mouth of columbia influence

  21. Rob "Wrath" S.E. Portland says:

Waiting to see if radar fills in along the Coast within the next hour as a wave moves onshore.

  22. yevpolo1990 says:

Wow, we are going to get hammered with freezing rain now.

  23. Wendy-Silverlake,WA says:

    Upper levels still look cold.

  24. Looks like the action is done for the night. Stop snowing here/freezing rain. 😦

    • TAGinGresham says:

Depends if what Rob has pointed out on the WV fills in or not. We will see soon enough I’m sure!

  25. Deanna (salmon creek) says:

turned to sleet for a little bit. now it’s all stopped.

  26. Brad says:

Big jump on the T3 tower temp. Cold air is getting shallower…and fast.

    • Rob "Wrath" S.E. Portland says:

All of the drier air aloft/lower dewpoints has probably been exhausted now. Setting stage for lots of ZR tonight in areas that have an east wind.

    • Brett says:

      Does that include OC Rob?

    • Rob "Wrath" S.E. Portland says:

Perhaps briefly if your temp is below freezing. Evaporative cooling potential is starting to diminish as we are seeing temp/dp spread narrow.

    • pappoose in scappoose says:

I think the showers passing through will also cause the temps to jump around some, probably up without moisture and down with a shower.

  27. Rob "Wrath" S.E. Portland says:

    Back from dinner….

PDX-DLS: is now over -10mb! No chance PDX cools off anytime soon.

  28. Darlene in Boring says:

Does anyone know what the roads are like in the Boring/Sandy area? Hwy 26? There was a light coating of ice pellets followed by some freezing rain…it is raining now but I can’t tell if it is freezing on contact…just too dark out here. Just curious if roads are bad outside of my little world. lol

Somebody said 0.25″ of ice? Not possible.

  34. Winds have died down a little in Gresham. One more picture added around my (frozen shut) BBQ 🙂

So winds from the ENE @ 15 saw a 42 gust. Temp is 27.5F parking lot is completely glazed over now (was just kinda glazed over at 6:15pm).

  35. EmzinTigard says:

so if the tower temps are dropping, why isn’t the precip falling as snow? i understand there is a layer of warmer air in there somewhere.. but if all tower temps are below freezing.. why is it not snow?

  36. Ben Randall says:

Oregon State Police: I-84 westbound is closed at Cascade Locks due to a jack knifed semi truck and trailer that is leaking fluid. OSP and ODOT are on scene and tow trucks are en route. OSP is reporting icy conditions in the Gorge and motorists should be prepared for long delays and winter driving conditions. Drivers should check Trip Check for the latest road condition updates prior to starting any trip.

  37. ridgefieldzen says:

temp down 1 degree to 33 now, and DP up 3 degrees to 27. Powder sugar type coating on blacktop, decks. DOWN now to 32 just while typing this – clearing or warm front

  38. Temp bumped back up to 31.4 here. Looks like a narrower band of moisture about to move in briefly – wonder if that will bump it back down. Have no clue what the dp is here right now.
