Chucky D. Moves On

Charles Dalton posted this note earlier today in the comments, but I think it deserves it’s own post!

———

Farewell everybody.  I am moving on from this great town of Portland…back to the land of thunderstorms.  I’ve been here at the NWS in Portland for 4yrs this month.  My time has finally come to move on however, and I now make the trek back east to Arkansas.  I will be the newest general forecaster at the Little Rock office.

Before I go however, I thought I would make one last post on the blog here for “old times sake.”

I have enjoyed watching this blog over the past 4yrs. This blog has been a valuable resource at times…especially during winter weather when you all report temps and precip from about the area.  Furthermore, it has been interesting to see you grow in your knowledge about the weather. You’ve gone from knowing essentially nothing about the workings of weather and forecasting, to having a decent grasp on things.  I encourage you to keep enjoying and learning about the weather.

Keep up the weather watching!

———-

Well that’s too bad…I think most of you would agree that Charles has been a great forecaster over at the NWS.  He clearly loves forecasting and watching weather.  Very supportive of our “virtual weather-geek pub” right here as well.  And each time a new forecaster comes to town (whether it’s NWS or TV) he/she needs to learn all about our little issues (rain shadows, gorge effects, inversions etc…).

Well, we know next winter when the east wind is raging out of the Gorge and moisture is approaching from the west, Charlies will be sneaking a peek at a few PDX and TTD obs. just for old time’s sake.  Maybe even checking out that -15.5 millibar PDX-DLS gradient!  And, technically, he’ll ALWAYS be east of I-205 now!  Good luck Chuck!

Charles will be sorely missed around these parts! However I believe his forecasting talent will be quickly be put to good use in Little Rock, where the weather truly is threatening on a regular basis. They need someone like him out there!!!

As for the wind…I was down in Springfield when the winds came through early this afternoon and they were pretty gusty. Not sure if the gusts broke 45mph, but 30-35mph is a good bet. The trees were getting a thrashing and the power went out for a couple seconds.

The biggest damage I could see was to some of the campaign signs on the farm fences along I-5! Karma, maybe? 🙂

  2. Mr Data says:

I checked and lo and behold 28mph. 😕 What the fook?

I guess this must be an east side event………only seeing Lebanon got spotty power outages to add to the boot.

    very very intriguing.

  3. Mr Data says:

We had a few between 40 and 45mph for like 3 gusts or so that really gave the trees a spring whiplash they won’t forget.

    KSLE not exceeding 28mph?……………….riiiiiight. -_-

They must have a baaaaaaaaaaaaaaad sensor as they also record winds 10mph higher then here at times.

  4. Rob "Wrath" S.E. Portland says:

Hey all…. Really “under the weather” so to speak past 2 days. I just got out of bed and online reading the posts. In my opinion this is an unwarranted Wind Advisory. KSLE has not even exceeded 28mph yet. KEUG 26mphm, KMMV 24mph. My guess is a few limbs came down, weak trees with saturated weak roots came down and they really jumped the gun, overreacted. I do see a low on WV loop developing due west of Cape Blanco right over 130 W.

woops, wrong email sorry about the moderation mark

Yea where is this WIND, calm here also… satellite does show some sort of a low trying to form off of southern OR coast..

    • alohabb says:

I’m betting that the wind is on its way if Silverton and Salem are getting pounded. I better not lose power for the game! Or maybe I’ll just have to run to the local watering hole! Whoo Hoo

  8. yevpolo1990 says:

why is there a wind advisory? or this a tease from Charles?!

  9. Mr Data says:

I would like to know what the gradients are please?

We are still having gusty winds.

  10. Tyler in Hazel Dell says:

A very mild day out, even with the rain now moving in!

Gusty winds out of nowhere, but they are gone as well.

Headed to the beach the next couple of days…hopefully some nice sunbreaks with cold showers.

  11. W7ENK says:

Random wind gust to 21.5 mph out of nowhere…

Man oh man where is Rob when you need him.

    • B.C. Fred, Silverton F.D. says:

We’ve got an engine, a brush unit and a Duty Officer out on power lines down/grass fire in the hills, south of Hwy 214.

I’ve got two or three large branches and lots of smaller debris down in the yard. Saw small debris on the local roads between Silverton and Scotts Mills. Winds are gusty!

  13. Mr Data says:

    2:28pm my lights flickered.

Getting very gusty winter winds. 😮

35-40mph at times estimate. NO JOKE!

  14. Snow-Zone/Monmouth-Elv200' says:

The wind is getting quite gusty. 61F

Saw this on Fox 12’s site today. Very Touching “Snow Event”. I bet none of you foretasted this 🙂 I love it when people go to great lengths to bring big joy to someone less fortunate.

  16. I’m reading instability parameters that suggest a possible t-storm tomorrow PM into Wednesday…

    64.2F

  17. Mr Data says:

    In response to W73NK:

Salem is that way too though not as large of a degree as Portland.

Certain parts of Salem are 1-3F cooler or warmer.

  18. W7ENK says:

Wow, there must have been at least a 6 degree temperature differential between Milwaukie and Clackamas this morning. When I left the house around 10:30 it was a bit chilly outside, so I wore long sleeves, but when I got here to my buddy’s shop in Clackamas, I stepped out of the car and it was warm and muggy!

    Oops, that was a mistake!

  19. Good luck ChuckyD. Will miss seeing your name at the end of the AFD….

East winds have really warmed up the temps..

  20. umpire says:

Glad I got to hear his winter round-up at the March AMS meeting. Charles/Chuck, may you have great weather events to forecast, but maybe not so bad as this weekends storms across the South!

  21. Sandi (Wilsonville) says:

Sorry to hear you’re moving on, ChuckyD, and I hope for the best for you in your new position and area. I’ve always enjoyed your posts here and reading your AFDs at the NWS. You are/were very much a part of this blog! Please continue to stop by and post from time to time!

  22. Mr Data says:

Maybe now we will get winds from Arkanasa bringing us their airmasses. 🙂

  23. pappoose in scappoose says:

Farewell ChuckyD. Keep us informed on the weather east of I-205 and we’ll always be on top of it out here.

  24. Timmy_Supercell (Hillsboro) says:

Farewell Chucky! It was nice having him on the blog.

  25. Andrew Johnson says:

Good luck in Little Rock. IMO Arkansas is a very underrated state full of natural beauty. Certainly not like Oregon, but I think it would be a good place to live. You will miss the Oregon summers.

  26. …good luck and best wishes to ChuckyD…let us hope in his gulf vs continental air masses he feeds us a bone or two!

  27. Mr Data says:

Seriously: Does anyone know what happend to the high defintion channel that had local streaming webcams and showed the weather 24/7?

I was just getting into it when it got canned a few years ago.

  28. Mr Data says:

    Same here W7ENK. 😦

I don’t know half these people on here so I feel like a total stranger 😮 but enjoy your new home Chucky. 🙂

For some reason wii don’t get fox 12 on our HD tv even though we have gotten other High Defintion channels.

    • Vorticity Max says:

      Mr Data,
We got Fox 12 HD over the air great before the drop of the Analog signals. Then it disappeared. Found out that they dropped the transmission wattage significantly after dropping analog. Solution: Got a much better HD antenna, now I get 12 fine.

  29. W7ENK says:

I didn’t know him, but by the sounds of it, he will be missed! Come back and visit once in a while? 🙂
