Gloomy 4th of July?

7 Years of Independence Day Weather
7 Years of Independence Day Weather

These numbers and weather surprised even me!  We haven’t seen any sort of significant rain (more than .01″) in Portland since 2000.  In fact this will be the 7th consecutive year with a warm start to July which includes the 4th.  Now last year you probably remember the thunderstorms the first few days of the month, culminating in a marine push which gave us a lot of cloud cover on the holiday itself.

Right now I don’t see any dramatic changes before Sunday evening.  At that time we get a major marine push as a shortwave trough swings by heading off to the northeast.  00z models are not very impressive with respect to thunderstorm chances west of the Cascades, so I should probably take it out of the 7 day forecast (Sunday night).  Quite a cold trough next week too.  Definitely a step back towards May.
Hope you all enjoy the4th of July.  I’ll be driving the Cub Scout Pack 272 “tow vehicle” for their float in the Corbett 4th Parade.   Then between 5-7pm I’m supposed to be serving burgers and other yummy unhealthy foods in the Youth Sports booth up there.  Come up and buy an elephant ear!

Whatever is happening over the Vancouver Island should be happening here too. where is the action?

  2. 55.3° this morning and cloudy. No rain and a very light SE breeze.

  3. Rob "Wrath" S.E. Portland says:

Hmmm fresh lightning strikes off the central/northern Washington Coast, and lightning continues over Vancouver Island…. Well over 8 hours of pretty much continuous activity there.

Upon further review this is with temps in the low 50’s and westerly flow… Must be a nice cold pocket aloft.
I’m really quite impressive the atmosphere is charging up in conditions like these.

      Impressed* rather…

Tetra, me? … House I believe was built in 1962? um… We do have A/C ya.

Well no t-storms here for sure, but one thing has intrigued me. Persistent lightning over the past 4-6 hours over Vancouver Island.

    Good night all.

  5. Tetra says:

    Clouds really thick now.

The clearing towards the west is realllllllllllllllllllllly small now. I hope the nice breeze doesn’t go if I don’t get any lightning.

Since you and me are pretty much alone I want to know how old and what kind of house you have anyways?

    Does it have AC?

  6. Rob "Wrath" S.E. Portland says:

Ahhh nooo it’s all weakening…. Perhaps later.

  7. Tetra says:

VERY VERY nice breeze outside. Step on out.

There are solid clouds coming in from the East: Southeast and South. ????????

  8. Rob "Wrath" S.E. Portland says:

Was just outside…. The clouds are moving due north now, so it appears the flow aloft has indeed veered to mainly southerly. Also some CU out there and what looks like convection trying to develop west of the Cascade into the Foothills.

  9. Currently 60.9° and calm. Good sleeping weather tonight.

  10. Rob "Wrath" S.E. Portland says:

T-storms developing. Should be lightning flashes at times to our southeast. This is west of Warm Springs.
    Better than nothing, right?

  11. Rob "Wrath" S.E. Portland says:

NWS suggests there may be t-storms along the north Oregon Cascades tonight… Radar confirms activity developing along the central/northern Cascades…. Not sure of lightning strikes just yet, BUT if we are very lucky we might see some flashes/distant flashes to the east tonight.

  13. Timmy_Supercell (Hillsboro) says:

I won’t be liking the high temperatures for the next few days, it will be like early May all over again!

  14. Timmy_Supercell (Hillsboro) says:

    62 degrees out in Hillsboro.

My zip code (97124) hasn’t been updating on Wunderground, so now I am depending on my thermometer to do the job…

  15. Andrew Johnson (Silverton) says:

I’m down to 64 already! Just went outside in shorts and it felt downright chilly after the past few days!

  16. Okay…I’m LOVING the marine push of cooler air! Perfect temps right now…..

  17. Starting to feel more comfortable out….75.1F with a light SW wind.

    High reached 87.7F here

  18. Timmy_Supercell (Hillsboro) says:

Well, no storms today… And no storms for a long while… I hope its not like this the rest of the month

  19. Rob "Wrath" S.E. Portland says:
