More Chilly Weather

Snapshot  So I did some searching through the weather records today.  It has been very chilly, as we all know.  Looks like the last time we didn't make it above 61 degrees in either February or March was 1955!  We are in historic territory again with a cold start to Spring.  My peach and nectarine blossoms still show almost no sign of life, the apple and pear trees are still, well, brown and waiting for February weather to end.  Of course we also all know that things could turn around quickly and April could end up being mild.

A short post tonight because I'm headed out to a little celebration for a co-worker that's heading upstairs.  It's either a longer post or relaxation and libations.  For now I'm going to choose the latter…Mark Nelsen

In all fairness u can’t see thunder so its not possible to see thunder snow but u can hear thunder and see snow lol

  2. Rob "Wrath" - Elevation 300' -Far S.E. Portland- says:

I have only seen thunder snow twice in my life. It is a neat phenomenon..
Go Blazers! This is a HUGE game tonight!

  3. Tyler in Hazel Dell says:

Fun to see thunder snow reported in Pullman today…

  4. Jesse-Camas says:

I notice the new 7-day has sunny skies with highs in the low 60s and lows in the mid-40s for next Monday and Tuesday.
Seems a tad optimistic considering the 18Z has a large trough over us for that timeframe, with 850s of -5 and thicknesses in the mid-520s. 😉

  5. Jesse-Camas says:

Yet another unseasonably cold airmass is moving in this afternoon, dropping down from the NNW.
Temps only in the mid-upper 40s with DPs falling to near 30 and NW winds.
Looks like it will get a bit nicer and sunnier after late week, but nights look to remain unseasonably cold.

  6. …just talked to a friend in hermiston, and he’s got stuff flying thru the air hitting his roof…

  7. Andrew Johnson (Silverton) says:

Wow I just noticed that Pendleton had west winds 43G58 at 2pm.

  8. ….oh yea…the “treasure” valley.i wonder what speculator named that one????, cause, pre-irrigation, it wasnt much of a treasure there!!!..some of that Snake river scabland is fairly unattractive to anything but rattlesnakes……

  9. …sorry about the mis-spelling…

  10. Andrew Johnson (Silverton) says:

Well it is a low elevation when compared to the surrounding topography :). But Larry is right, most of the valleys in central and eastern Oregon are above 2500. With the exception of the Columbia Basin and Treasure Valley most of the area east of the Cascades is higher than that.

  11. timmy - scappoose says:

thanks larrie! i needed a geography lesson. even andrew admitted it was a bit misleading. obviously there are high vallies… but the implications of saying it is snowing in the valleys of X location, is that it is snowing at a low elevation. where as if he were to say it is snowing in NE oregon, i would immediately think that it is snowing in the prodominately high elevation part of NE oregon.

  12. ..actually, Timmie, most valleys in eastern oregon are above 2500 feet, the columbia basin being a big exception; Grande Ronde is 2500, Baker is 3500, Bear Valley (the valley Seneca is in) is around 4700….

  13. …Just had a nice litle hail squall move thru eagle creek-barton..

  14. Santa says:

So it appears that instead of wishcasting snow, it is now wishcasting of tornado’s. LOL !!!

  15. Andrew Johnson (Silverton) says:

The Wallowa Valley…lol…Ya its 4000′ so sorry to mislead anyone 🙂

  16. Punxsutawney (aka HIO Phil at work by Sunset High ~280' elevation) says:

The warmest temp over the next 16 days per the 12z GFS (Meteostar) is 53 degrees for Hillsboro. That’s probalbly a bit lower than what will occur in reality, but hardly warm for April just the same.

I was looking at those clouds out here just before noon and other than being dark and angry looking, nothing to talk about here.

Mammatus on the one north of milwaukie at 12:27

  18. Rob "Wrath" - Elevation 300' -Far S.E. Portland- says:

I should say very weak rotation more like a few blips of inbound/outbound winds not adjacent to each other.

  19. Rob "Wrath" - Elevation 300' -Far S.E. Portland- says:

I just ran the archive on my radar program in velocities mode and about in that location I did see some weak rotation. Nothing that appeared well organized or closed. Perhaps more of a multi-directional cloud movement. I also saw similar indications near I-205 & SR 14.

  20. timmy - scappoose says:

yeah but if someone said that it is snowing in the valleys of western washington, but showed a pic of a valley in the Oylimpics with snow falling, its a bit misleading. when i heard valley, i automatically thought for NE oregon, like Pendleton or hells canyon… maybe its just me. its no biggy though.

  21. eflow says:

about 10 min near govt island

  22. Rob "Wrath" - Elevation 300' -Far S.E. Portland- says:

eflow, how long ago was this?

  23. eflow says:

Yah Clouds actually looked a little rotational, and radar confirmed it, but nothing to get too concerned about, though a funnel cloud would have brightened the day 🙂

  24. Rob "Wrath" - Elevation 300' -Far S.E. Portland- says:

Ask and you shall receive? Just had a pretty strong shower roll through. Heavy rain, but no hail or thunder.

  25. Boring Larry in Cherryville el.918 says:

…Joseph is most definitely in a valley…about as picture perfect of one as can be…….doesn’t matter what elevation, it’s still a valley!!!…

  26. eflow says:

    vancouver tornado 2?

  27. timmy - scappoose says:

are you implying that Joseph at 4000′ is in a valley? maybe relative to the mountains around, but that is some good elevation.

  28. Andrew Johnson (Silverton) says:

I’m sitting at 45 and what had been a dry morning has turned very damp during the past 45 minutes. Snow starting to fall in the valleys of NE Oregon…

  29. Mike from Orchards says:

Will Spring ever get here????…..Doesn’t look to warmup anytime soon.
Cool 45.7F…light rain….0.10″ rain so far

  30. Heisson Rob (750') says:

With this sort of weather, good choice on the fellowship instead of the post, Mark. I think none of us would disagree.
I have dandelions blooming, but no tulips, plums, peaches, or cherries. That is truly unfair.

  31. Andrew Johnson (Silverton) says:

I cannot believe how chilly this March has been. Most valley locations are going to end up 2-5 degrees below normal for March. Western Washington 3-5 below normal and the same difference on the east side of both states. I saw that McCall, Idaho is -7.0 for the month! Matt Z. on KGW last night said that its the 5th snowiest March at Gov. Camp on record so far. It’ll be interesting to see what April has in store.

  32. Gidrons says:

Uggh, another cold week but maybe a dry weekend.

  33. TetraforceofTime also The destroyer of bad-boys says:

Mark Nelson if you are reading this please delete all my posts prior to Petesey screaming at me. I want to “dissapear”
    One last thing.
I hope your happy Petsey I am leaving this blog since I can’t have the freedom of disagreeing I don’t want to be in this Yahoo teenager trash place anymore and get spanked.
“Good job Tetra YOU hit 60! I hit an amazingly balmy 49.3 today. Take a look at Mark’s post, it shows exactly what I was talking about. IT’S BEEN COLD! Jack***. Go back to Western and argue. Can’t even make a comment on here anymore without Tetra jumping all over it.”
The commment I just said about 60F would’ve sparked a healthy debate but I would not gotten yelled at anywhere else but everyone except for Rob who is the elder on here is too dense to handle disagreements.
Its a shame what this young 90s generation has come too. I know now what to expect from humans and I despise the human race.
I hope you and all your followers get a one-way ticket to Hell when you’all die as you’all deserve it and I don’t feel sorry for anything I said as you satan worshippers deserve it 100% and to anyone else who can’t handle disagreements like a 9yr old. 😛
Good bye and good riddence you lot.
PS: I wish I could delete all my posts so I won’t be known here anymore. I hope Mark can do that.
*Slams blog door causing all the papers to fall down and gets on the nearest train outta Oregon before Petesy sends the whole blog-army out with guns and rocket launchers blocking the lines*

  34. TetraforceofTime also The destroyer of bad-boys says:

Furthermore Petsey if you are going to make fun of somebody YOU should go to Western and make fun of Timothy there like everyone else is doing
He always complains about the paint peeling off of everyones homes cause of crappy weather and how everyone is depressed and sick.
He almost never enjoys what he gets and finds someone to make it bad.
People like you makes me want to KILL someone……….namely you but anyone will do.

  35. TetraforceofTime also The destroyer of bad-boys says:

I dn’t know what the god d–n hell I said to make you upset but you better quite being mean or if I see you I’ll beat your sorry ass up!.

  36. TetraforceofTime also The destroyer of bad-boys says:

Hey I am NOT JUMPING ON ANYBODY! SO shush up! I just made a simple comment saying I made it 60F and that’s that.
60 is 60. I still wound up below average and I like it. Don’t push me buster!

  37. Mike-Mult Villige now in Ft. Collins, CO says:

Here in Ft. Collins the cold streak which began shortly after my arrival 9 days ago continues. Just enough snow from last Thursday’s storm remaining in shaded areas to make footing tricky especially after a pint of Bourbon Barrel Stout at Coopersmith’s.
What a wild ride it’s been in terms of temps. Denver had a 28 high and 12 low on March 27, 22 degrees below normal. The following 3 days ending today featured highs of 38 – 67 -36.
Quite a shock after 7 years of Portland’s gradual temp movements.
Very windy here as well, like the big gorge east wind event in Corbett days on end. I heard my first local wind joke- Wyoming blows and Nebraska sucks.
Some things haven’t changed though, I been watching Mike Nelson on KUSA talk about the next big storm on the horizon for Saturday.

  38. PeteyJ says:

Good job Tetra YOU hit 60! I hit an amazingly balmy 49.3 today. Take a look at Mark’s post, it shows exactly what I was talking about. IT’S BEEN COLD! Jack***. Go back to Western and argue. Can’t even make a comment on here anymore without Tetra jumping all over it.

  39. mattmann says:

I am praying for a dry afternoon on Sunday!
    big paintball day!

  40. Ben Randall (tillamook city) says:

    first?

  41. Rob "Wrath" - Elevation 300' -Far S.E. Portland- says:

    Whoops! Sorry…. That double posted.

  42. Rob "Wrath" - Elevation 300' -Far S.E. Portland- says:

    Mark, thanks for the update.
All I ask for is a cold pool aloft for some type of convective weather. I’ve spent the past several hours over on the Dallas/Ft. Worth Fox4 Weather Chat as they were just hammered by a fairly large severe weather outbreak. Golfball to Baseball sized hail and some wind damage. They probably received millions of dollars of damage. Needless to say that got me in the mood for some good ole Spring time t-storms.
