A Short Post

I got way behind tonight since I had to attend an Oregon AMS planning meeting.  But that's good since there is no significant weather in our future!  Now this meeting included our honorable President Bobby Corser…also known to the regulars here as TV Weather Producer.  We spent quite a few minutes after the meeting discussing important things.  You know, weather maps and who's dating who in the Portland TV weather scene…or something like that.  I told him this was cutting into my blog time, so he has been kind enough to send a "guest post".  Mark Nelsen

Well the weather has finally calmed down. 11+ days of snow is great for winter. I personally have to say a little break is very welcomed. We had our AMS planning meeting tonight and I am very excited for events coming up. We will take a look back at the December snow storm and maybe a another one…..models are hinting at one?!?!  We will also have a chat about Rose Festival Weather in May. Of course all of our meetings are posted on the Oregon AMS website. Enjoy the weather while it's somewhat calm. I'm wishing for a wind event. That would round out the winter !   Bobby Corser – Oregon AMS President

    Valentine’s Day snow/cold?

Quiet and rather dull in the short-mid term. Let’s look to la-la land. The last couple of days I have directed my attention to the great white north as an area of high pressure has been poking its nose ever so slightly southward over the pole. It is way- way out there, but might be our last gasp for a memorable cold spell. 12Z GFS shows a strenthening 1040mb surface high (not strong, but nothing on the map in North Am. is higher at hour 384 sliding south through central Canada. The 18Z GFS shows it at hour 312 and it strengthens to 1064mb! and moves it a little further west by the end of the run. Maybe once this winter have I seen any model spit that out-either in the believable or ‘yeah right’ time frame. Now the 0Z GFS shows it at 1040mb at 288 further west yet. Strengthens it to 1056 by the end. It is meandering in the NW Territories and am not sure of a mechanism to get it to roll south, maybe Rob can chime in on that. Yeah, it is a reach, but something fun to look at.

35.1F……very thick fog…..visibility was maybe a block or two when I was out running errands a while ago.

  6. Ryan (Walnut Grove) says:

205 at 4:45 was already covered by dense fog that without street lights made it feel like it was completely dark and not just the waning minutes of sun.

  7. PeteyJ says:

    Snowlover,
The latest 00gfs just slid our best chance to the east. was looking good the last couple of days straight, but the last two runs the 18 and now the 00 are getting worse. still a ways out though.

  8. SNOW LOVER says:

Does anyone think if there will be another shot of snow this season. When. Can we tell if there is antthing coming up yet?

  9. HIO Phil (Punxsutawney) elevation 189' says:

Looks like it warmed up nicely once the sun came out in Hillsboro with a high of at least 45, maybe 46. Where the fog remained it obviously stayed quite chilly.
33.5 DP 30 currently. Running about 1 degree cooler so far tonight.

  10. Sean in Felida, 200 feet says:

33.3 and fog settling back in. Slick roads again tomorrow morning, drive safe. Rob (Wrath), do you think we will see as strong east winds as two weeks ago?

  11. Tyler in Hazel Dell says:

It stayed fogged in all day up in Woodland, but looking at my timelapse, it cleared out nicely down here.
I took some pictures with the fog I will post later.

  12. Rob "Wrath" - Elevation 300' -Far S.E. Portland- says:

    34.5

  13. Tetraforce (The hidden fourth piece of The Triforce says:

The good news is we are still overdue for a major Siberien Express air event or something so Feb could be our big month for everywhere….even here.

  14. Rob "Wrath" - Elevation 300' -Far S.E. Portland- says:

Mike, I just checked… They have another one of their flawless high-tech WeatherAlarms for high winds Feb2nd lol

  16. Mike from Orchards says:

Does look like lots of east wind coming up………better check and see what “AccuWeather” is predicting…………
38.5F here with no winds…….pressure was high, now down a bit to 30.585″…

Andrew gets a warmer day then me. How weird.

  19. Tom - NE Portland says:

Wow, after about an hour of sunshine, the fog has really thickened back up here. Looks quite eerie with the Sun still out.
    PDX’s high today was 38…nice!

  20. TV Weather Producer says:

H Rob, mark was just joking about that. We only talked about weather equipment and what’s the future of graphics. Very boring.

  21. Heisson Rob (750') says:

Enough with the weather, who’s dating who in the Portland Weather scene?
38 and foggy in the hills of Battle Ground, but it was clear in town. This morning it was the reverse, clear up here but foggy in town.

  22. Rob "Wrath" - Elevation 300' -Far S.E. Portland- says:

NCEP 18z GFS operational run shows lots of east wind over the next 7-8 days. I stopped looking after wards due to lower resolution.

  23. Andrew Johnson (Silverton) says:

I’m at 40, a few patches of clear sky now.

  24. Tetraforce (The hidden fourth piece of The Triforce says:

33.4F for our low and dense fog and it’s 38.8F now. It’s still foggy but not as bad.

  25. Rob "Wrath" - Elevation 300' -Far S.E. Portland- says:

    Up to 41.4 here

  26. Christiana--Forest Grove says:

In my part of Forest Grove the temp is all the way up to 47 after starting out at 29.

  27. cap - Hood River says:

Here’s an interesting tidbit: The current weather pattern is the exact opposite of last week. Driving in from HR, my temp went from sunny and 40 deg, to 34 and foggy.

  28. cap - Hood River says:

    LOL !!
    Mark, you crack me up!

  29. Punxsutawney (aka HIO Phil at work by Sunset High ~280' elevation) says:

Hillsboro is now above freezing, reporting 34 and fog. I have a feeling that the forecast high of 43 is in jepordy today. We probably won’t make it above 40 today as it’s still pretty foggy here in Beaverton, though it’s starting to get brighter and sattelite indicates some clearing coming from the NW.

  31. Brian in Bellingham says:

I have been following the GFS for years, and yes it often does put in cold weather toward the end. But not always. For example, the last week or so had not shown any cold air in later periods, until yesterday. In fact, the 06GFS has the cold air arriving a lot sooner then La La Land.
To be fair, the European model has not shown it at all (we only see the first 10 days), and the 12Z and yesterday’s 18Z did not show it nearly that soon.
But it is not really correct to say that it “always” shows cold air toward the very end.
