Winter Go Away!

SnapshotWell, I can’t take it anymore…it’s too cold, and I don’t look forward to waking up to snow on the ground again in the morning.

Everything is proceeding according to the weather plan this evening.  The well-advertised cold airmass is moving in.  I’m just amazed at how cold it is here in the 2nd half of April at 10pm.  Our tower temp at 1800′ is 30 degrees,  a dusting of snow has fallen in spots at the Coastline, and it’s only 16 degrees at Timberline!

The core of the upper-level low is currently over Southern British Columbia, and only moves to S.Central Washington by Monday morning.  I have scanned lots of maps and see little to no organized areas of precipitation through Sunday.  That’s the main reason I’ve laid off the possibility of snow in the lowest elevations here in the Western Valleys.  It’s clearly going to be cold enough the next 3 nights for snow to stick down here, but the moisture seems to be limited to mainly afternoon/evenings inland.  The Coast is a different story.  Pretty much a constant feed of heavy showers move onshore now through Sunday.  So at night some accumulation is likely even at the lowest elevations out there.

What happened in Seattle tonight really shows what precipitation intensity will do in this airmass.  3-5" of snow in N. Seattle/Everett, while it was 40 degrees or higher in the central/southern part with little or no precipitation.  So I’m VERY aware that any organized area of showers could give us a "surprise" snowfall here in the metro area the next 2 days.  I’m crossing my fingers and assuming that won’t happen.  Enjoy the weekend and discuss amongst yourselves…maybe we’ll hit 85 just 10 days from now??? One can hope…Mark Nelsen

Snow is starting to stick now. Just drove down to about 500 feet and it was sticking there as well. Road is just beginning to get covered, and trees are all dusty white. I thought this would have past us over by now, but apparently we have a small cell just spinning over us. April 21, who woulda thunk it?

  7. Sean (Lebanon, Indiana) says:

Looking at the webcam up at Welches (http://theresort.com/local_area_webcam.php) shows a very wintry scene outside this morning. Taking a look at the ECMWF, continues to show colder than normal weather continuing possibly until end of the month. Could this mean snow in May? It will be interesting to see how things continue to play out.
But, the weather here today (heck even for the week) is absolutely pleasant! Temps in the mid to upper 70s and clear blue skies! But then some rain possible this weekend, at least it’s not snow! πŸ˜‰

  8. Camas~Mom says:

Snowing nicely! Not sticking. No idea of temp, sensor got turned upside down in that wind 2 days ago and got wet. 😦 Sure looks pretty this January!

  9. kirk north of washougal says:

Snowing here pretty good and it is 34.5. We are just into the snow. Drove home a few minutes ago and it did not turn to pure snow until about 800 ft elevation.

  10. Tyler Mode in NW Vancouver (Hazel Dell) says:

Light rain with a few flakes mixed in, but nothing major.

  11. 36.3 here now…just plain old light rain.
Where was all this moisture last night?

  12. Tyler Mode in NW Vancouver (Hazel Dell) says:

Ya hmmm…temp is 37 here, so it would be close. April 21st…talk of snow in the lowlands…got to love it!

  13. timmy - scappoose says:

judging by the radar, it looks like an organized band of potentially snow showers could make things interesting for some in coming hours… but im not gonna stay up to see it. tell me what happens.

    Mark et.al,
Just drove from Gresham through Troutdale and up to the Viewpoint Inn during the shower. Saw two strikes with thunder within 3 seconds or less and the temp went from 46 to 34 in about 10 minutes. Everything white at Corbett and especially Springdale.

Ignore the lightning plots tonight, I think last week I accidentally set our weather system to get the eastern USA only. I see that none are showing up on my links…yes, I was checking it like the rest of you!

  32. J.R. (clackamas 220ft) says:

    Now
At 551 PM PDT National Weather Service Doppler radar indicated showers and isolated thunderstorms extending from West Linn to Gresham…moving northeast at 15 mph. These showers and isolated thunderstorms will impact the region from Milwaukie and Clackamas to Troutdale through 645 PM PDT. Small hail…heavy rain…gusty winds up to 35 mph…and dangerous lightning can be expected in these areas.
