Wet & Wild Week

SnapshotCold front slowly moving towards the Pacific Northwest Coast tonight;  it’ll bring a quick end to our warm/dry weather.  This is the leading edge of a chilly airmass.  The cool air itself doesn’t arrive until Wednesday.  As the cold/unstable air sits over us Wednesday and Thursday, we should see the classic heavy shower, hail, and thunder spring weather pattern.
The last 3 runs of the GFS indicate much sharper ridging for this upcoming weekend.  Of course a warm and sunny weekend forecast for May is a dangerous thing to hand out on a Monday, but I feel like living dangerously tonight.

J.R. – I’m guessing it is probably grapule (sp?) which most of us mistook for a snow pellet this past winter.

  2. J.R. says:

What the…… how is portland airport reporting light snow or snow pellets? Here in clackamas I’m at 52 right now

  3. Jordan_longview says:

Some of the best lightning off to my west today.

  4. Jerry says:

We really need some sunshine for some more and it looks like we are getting it. Hopefully this afternoon is packed with thunder!

  5. Tyler in Vancouver says:

Portland Airport reporting…Lt Snow Shwr, Mod Snow Pellet, Mod Rain with a wind gust to 35 mph.
Well it’s no Midwest thunderstorm, but for this area, these storms are decent. I’m still hoping for some good lightning storms this summer.
    Tyler

  6. Tyler in Vancouver says:

Most of the strikes were just north of I-84 right in downtown Portland. There was one right off of 205 just south of the Multnomah County line. I only heard some good rumbles of thunder here with hail and heavy rain, most of the activity moved to my south.
Chilly too by the way, in the 40s at 2:30 on May 2nd…brrr.

  7. AtmosphericWrath -Southeast Portland- says:

We definitely had gusts here exceeding 40mph the wind would come in bursts roaring through.
    Pretty impressive.

  8. Gregg-Troutdale says:

Strong gust to 38.1 here, shower starting to move in here. Looks like the heaviest part will be just to my west.

  9. Snowhound says:

    LOL
    I couldn’t agree more, Hamgrl.
You haven’t lived until you are woken up at 2am by the shreak of the tornado sirens and have to rush down to the basement.
I do undertand though in an area of the country that experiences extremely moderate weather patterns, that anything more than rain will excite a weather junkie.
I’ve lived here for over 10 years now and I have to admit I do get excited when I hear a crack of thunder too.
    Makes me miss home 😉

    Wow.
    Tremendous bursts of wind now.
Has to be 40-50mph. Trees and bending.

  12. hamgrl says:

I dont post often but I must say to me it is always quite funny when they call for thunderstorms in this part of the country and everyone gets all wound up about it LOL!!! I think growing up in the deep south where we literally slept in cellars and bath tubs may have something to do with it!! My mother in law wont go outside right now because she is petrified. I love it… brings back memories…although I have yet to hear thunder go figure.

  13. J.R. says:

I’m here at work in clackamas off sunnyside road… we had thunder that just shook our building it was very loud. Then it was followed up by heavy hail and now its just hard rain and wind…. I am at work on my cell phone… if anyone could check where that lightning strike was at near clackamas that woud be awesome
    Thanks

  14. IceKeeg - Close-in SE PDX says:

street was covered in hail a few moments ago – switched to rain now. Radar shows it turned a good shade of light purple over this area – still getting some good thunder.

  15. Snowhound says:

You can tell the people on here that must never have experienced severe, tornado spawning weather.
I don’t know how anyone can “hope” for a tornado.
Especially in an ill-equiped part of the country such as this with no early warning system.
Don’t get me wrong, I love exciting weather with lightning and wind, but not something that would more likely than not take a life or lives.
Here’s to hoping we don’t see a tornado.

  16. timmy - scappoose says:

here in st. helens, heaviest rain ive seen in a long time. also hail and thunder!

  17. AtmosphericWrath -Southeast Portland- says:

    Ok now increasing considerably.
Lightning now to my west and SW.
    Thunder easily heard.

  18. Ryan (Da Couve) says:

I’m down on Swan Island and we just got clipped by that big Cell heading towards Vancouver. Significant hail and thunder right now.

  19. IceKeeg - Close-in SE PDX says:

thunder and a burst of pretty good sized hail (larger than pea)
here near the river and SE Stark.

  20. AtmosphericWrath -Southeast Portland- says:

Well the cells all pulsed down considerably for the time being….

IN WASHINGTON: CLARK, COWLITZ, SKAMANIA, WAHKIAKUM.

  22. AtmosphericWrath -Southeast Portland- says:

All we get pretty much are pulsing t-storms here.
Well last July that one severe cell held together in intensity from Eugene all the way north to Clark county.

  23. Sean (Lebanon, Indiana) says:

What a difference a radar scan make.. One time it looks strong then the next scan it weakens.. Gotta love pulsing thunderstorms!

  24. Sean (Lebanon, Indiana) says:

I’m expecting to see a warning to come out on the cell moving into Cowlitz county.. Nearing 1″ hail at the core of that cell..

  25. Ben Monjay @ Work in Hillsboro says:

    Some thunder now in Hillsboro

  26. Sean (Lebanon, Indiana) says:

Also a few of the cells in western washington are starting to ramp up a bit also..

  27. Sean (Lebanon, Indiana) says:

That cell east of Clatskaine may go severe. Looking at the latest scan of that cell, could be producing upwards of 3/4″ hail.
One thing Rob – with these storms popping as they are now. Any instability in the atmosphere might be used up.

  28. AtmosphericWrath -Southeast Portland- says:

    Wow….
For the time being there’s lightning striking every 2-4 seconds on AM radio.
    Pretty impressive.
I also notice LI (lift index) is 0 to -2 now.

  29. AtmosphericWrath -Southeast Portland- says:

Well it’s almost 1:30 PM and lightning activity is definitely increasing on AM radio.
If we can keep the same sun break pattern that we’ve had the last few hours we should pop of some more significant t-storms later.
Maybe even a brief severe t-storm warning somewhere in western Oregon, western Washington.
Really depends on the sun breaks though.

  30. Cherie_in_Vernonia says:

Heard thunder twice in the last few minutes. Had some tiny hail earlier….for just a brief time
