Cold Showers Continue

SnapshotNice convective shower day today, although there were no lightning strikes anywhere west of the Cascades from Seattle to Californiad.  Plenty of hail though as a very cold upper-level trough is now overhead.  It’ll still be overhead tomorrow.  There is no obvious trigger for convection, so it should be strongly diurnal (based on daytime heating).
As I suspected yesterday, with a cold trough still basically overhead Thursday and Friday, it’ll be tough to avoid afternoon showers those days.  And now I see our RPM model shows afternoon convection over the Cascades and Coast Range Thursday afternoon.
More cool weather over the weekend with another trough, then HOPEFULLY a change towards higher 500mb heights will bring us milder and more seasonal late April weather next week.  Some models are showing that.
By the way, April 18th last year (tomorrow’s date) was the beginning of a 3 week stretch of warm and unusually dry weather.  Remember?  Wouldn’t that be nice!  Mark

Finally after seeing the dark and billowing skies all day, we have hail up here in Vancouver…nothing substantially heavy or large. Temp is 45, nice and chilly.

Fun day to work outside today. Saw the clouds roll in one right after the other! Dumped good sized hail twice on us follow by some descent showers. Late about 3:45 or so we had a couple of good flashes follow by some great ripping thunder!!! Fun stuff!

  6. offroadjosh-aloha says:

Just heard a rumble of thunder.

  7. AtmosphericWrath -Southeast Portland- says:

    New lightning on AM radio.
Seeing some promising buildups to my west as well as yet another cell about to push through the same areas as the last t-storm(Tigard, West Linn, Clackamas)

  8. Weatherer - North Portland says:

Nice and sunny to my east right now but the sky looks rather ominous to the west…hmmmmm!

  9. timmy - scappoose says:

i wouldnt be surprised if the NWS post a snow advisory for the north oregon cascades, or better yet a heavy snow warning. that line heading there should drop a couple inches.

  10. Jen-West Linn says:

Have hail, heavy rain and thunder/lightening here is West Linn. Pretty fun!

  11. AtmosphericWrath -Southeast Portland- says:

Another strike towards Clackamas verified by friend on cell phone who saw the bolt less than 1/4 mile from him.
Heard thunder on that one as well.
Cell is intensifying at the moment..

  12. AtmosphericWrath -Southeast Portland- says:

Hopefully we get good sun breaks after this line pushes through the metro area.

  13. Ryan (Da Couve) says:

Had a pretty good shower roll through Swan Island not too long ago. I didn’t see any lightning or hear any thunder but it dropped a lot of hail. Lasted around 20 minutes or so.

  14. AtmosphericWrath -Southeast Portland- says:

Lightning strike to my SW about 10 miles towards Clackamas.

  15. timmy - scappoose says:

look at a radar and look at that enhancement at castle rock!!!

  16. timmy - scappoose says:

most of that intense shower missed me to the north, but im getting some heavy hail now. all hail, not big, but tons of it.

  17. SnowFlake says:

WoooooHOOOO!!! Hailing like crazy here in Tigard/Bull Mtn. Pea-sized hail, some maybe a little bigger (making quite a nasty racket on the roof!). Very heavy downpour. No lightning/thunder though (dang…).

  18. timmy - scappoose says:

nice enhancing shower coming right for me. its been sunny for a half hour now, this could be interesting.

  19. Andrew---Ellensburg, Wa and Portrland, Or says:

Insanly windy here today. For a while winds were sustained at 37mph with gusts into the mid 50’s. Kind of came out of no where, was not expecting it. Currently sustained at 27mph, gusting to 36mph.

  20. AtmosphericWrath -Southeast Portland- says:

    Lol It weakened, for now…..

  21. AtmosphericWrath -Southeast Portland- says:

    Another strike.
    Perhaps becoming active now.

  22. AtmosphericWrath -Southeast Portland- says:

    About time!
Very loud lightning strike on AM radio.
Looking at radar and the sky it is to the west over downtown Portland.

  23. timmy - scappoose says:

i had just gotten out of bed when that shower hit, so i dont know if there were sunbreaks, im in st. helens now (8 miles north) seeing some sun now. not too much though, the sky is pretty full of clouds.

  24. Andrew---Ellensburg, Wa and Portrland, Or says:

I have some pretty good build up going on to the west and east of my location it looks like. Hoping to get another thunderstorm like the rain that passed through here yesterday afternoon. Temp went from 48 to 37 with a rain/snow mix and then hail. Had 1 or 2 flashes with it i believe as well as some pretty good thunder.

  25. AtmosphericWrath -Southeast Portland- says:

Timmy, are you seeing sun breaks?

  26. timmy - scappoose says:

A brief shower just moved through dropping moderate hail and heavy rain. i cant wait till this afternoon!

  27. AtmosphericWrath -Southeast Portland- says:

    Thanks for the update Mark.
Radar looks more favorable today as compared to yesterday.

These “cells” are more isolated rather than an area of showers or rain as they were yesterday.
As always I have my AM radio on and I’ll let you know when we get our 1st strike anywhere near the PDX/Vanc metro areas.

    Ryan…
I too suffer. I like the warmth that Spring brings….however I sometimes wish I could just “hibernate” all the way through it. That way when I finally wake up it’s warm, and I don’t feel like I’ve been someone’s punching bag.

It would be stellar if it rained all the way into July if you as me. šŸ™‚
Of course I doubt many folks on this blog have the caliber of allergies that I do.

  30. Sean (Lebanon, Indiana) says:

It’s kind of funny my wife and son are back there in Oregon this week and it ends up being cold and dreary there, while it’s sunny and 72 here yesterday. This weekend is looking perfect (Sunny and temps in the 70s on Saturday and 80s on Sunday).

  31. Gregg-Troutdale says:

Thanks for the update Mark!! Hoping for a return to a warmer spring.

  32. Antipex (SE Gresham) says:

Thanks, Mark! Hope for dry warm weather! šŸ™‚
