Windy & Hot Ahead

We are going through another dramatic swing from cool & moist onshore flow to hot & dry offshore flow this evening.  East wind has already made it to Troutdale this evening.  Dewpoint at PDX is 49 at 8pm, but 37 at TTD.
North Bend-Spokane gradient which was +5 mb. yesterday evening is now -8 mb (easterly) and increasing rapidly at 8pm.  A pretty deep thermal trough for early September will be in place along the Coast or Coast Range by morning.  KPTV’s RPM-WRF model shows the current 2.3mb easterly gradient through the  Gorge (PDX-DLS) will increase to possibly 6-7 millibars by midday Friday.  That’s unusually strong for the first day of September, more like a late October east wind event.  Wind gusts to 35 mph should spread across the entire metro area by midday, not just near the Gorge.  At the west end of the Gorge, expect gusts of 45-50 mph!  The Coast forecast is tough, I think east wind will make it to the coast at least until midday, so 80 or so is possible, especially north of Newport.  Inland forecast is easy…Hot.  If the east wind is too strong, which is possible, it may be tough to hit 90 at PDX.
Saturday should be a scorcher since the wind ends, which leaves us with a hot/dry atmosphere in place, but no onshore flow either as the thermal trough sits right over us.  So I bumped the high temperature back up to 94 and didn’t lower Sunday as much.
Ridging stays nearby through much of next week, so summer continues…Mark

Mark forecasted 64 for tonight. As I mentioned this morning, that is Septembers record high low.

  2. Derek Hodges says:

Hey the record high is 93 on Sunday, that could be broken. Anyway good luck with getting that thing back up.

  3. Derek Hodges says:

I think 87 here as well. But I still have a decent east wind blowing.

  4. Andrew says:

Looks like the airport hit 91, however i only hit 87 out here in sw portland 😦 . The wind stopped out here in the late afternoon ceasing our heating.

  5. Andrew says:

Lol, yes derek. It fell over during the winter as well.

  7. Derek Hodges says:

Still blowing here with the 5.0mb gradient in place. At this pace it should probably be down to about zero by wake up time tomorrow. Giving us a warm night..and a very hot day tomorrow.

  8. Derek Hodges says:

The wind has weakened..but is still blowing pretty good. My wind meter is recording stuff like 17-21. I am not entirely sure of its accuracy but thats still pretty good.

  9. Derek Hodges says:

Well if the east wind can keep blowing till about 7AM Portland will break the all-time september record high low. Thats a mouthful lol. And maybe I will rebreak what I set last night.

  10. Derek Hodges says:

Andrew – Didn’t that happen to you in the winter too lol. Sorry about that πŸ™‚ Its been windy all day here too. Branches all over the ground. No trees down though haha.

  11. luvrydog says:

Wow…didn’t know it would get this windy today. Driving to work today, there was a tree snapped in half across the road…LOVE IT, lol. I like these hot days when it’s windy…just don’t like the still air hot days.

  12. Andrew says:

    From the wind*

  13. Andrew says:

We just had a 1,000+ pound bamboo box fall over in our backyard when the wind. That will be fun trying to push back up.

  15. Derek Hodges says:

The gradient was 6.6mb at 11AM and probably higher still by now.

  16. Droppin says:

The gradient is still increasing. Larch Mt. north of Camas is now over 50mph. I am easily over 45mph here now can actually hear the wind roaring over my air conditioner.

  17. Jeremy says:

Terminal dusting in the hills and chilly on the east side.

  18. Tyler says:

Actually the gradient should start to decrease later. My brother just called from Yale Lake up by Mt. St. Helens and his tent blew away with everything in it. He estimates winds 50-60 mph up there. I was gonna go hiking up the mountains, glad I didn’t now. I’ve hiked in a wind storm, not fun trying to look up the entire time watching for falling trees.

  19. Derek Hodges says:

PDX-DLS gradient already 6.5mb and likely to increase.

  21. Derek Hodges says:

Thats wild that there was such a temp difference between places that had any east wind at all to those that didn’t. You can’t be more than 15-20 miles away from me but your low was almost 20 degrees cooler.

  22. Tyler says:

It’s amazing what the east winds can do. I dropped down to the upper 40s last night with no east wind…until about 7:50 this morning. At 7 a.m. I was 50, 8 a.m. 65, and by 9, 76 degrees. And of course with the east wind, the humidity has dropped from 77 to 20% since earlier this morning.

  23. Derek Hodges says:

Too bad PDX’s records aren’t kept here, thats 4 degrees higher than their all-time september record. I guess I should go enjoy the gusty wind. BTW its September 1st, feels closer to winter lol

  24. Derek Hodges says:

I had a low of 68 degrees last night, my all time september record lol. Thats 13 degrees warmer than the airport.

  25. Derek Hodges says:

Will mid seventies anyway. My wind gauge has only picked up gusts to 24.2mph but I doubt the accuracy of that. Looks like its gusting up to 30mph or so.

  26. Ryan says:

You know as soon as I hit “post” the winds start to pick up. It’s now SSE at about 4 mph sustained with the temp still dropping. I can even see the tree branches starting to sway a touch.

  27. Ryan says:

It’s 59 and falling up here in the Couve with calm winds.

  28. Droppin says:

70.8 here. 20-30mph east winds already. If it’s supposed to increase all night, all morning how windy could it end up being hmmm. As far as upper 70’s – low 80’s I think that’s possible by morning.

  29. Droppin says:

  30. Derek Hodges says:

up to 70.0 now, with increasing east winds I bet I wake up to upper seventies or low eighties.

  31. Derek Hodges says:

69.4, NE winds 5-10MPH, I think its risen here too

  32. luvrydog says:

We can’t buy into any excitement around here can we? I’m sick of the boring weather, how many times have I said that lately, lol. Guess this time of year is typically boring. Woke up to a cold morning…felt really nice though…kinda cool in the jeep with the top off though….perfect by afternoon though! Anyone think we’ll break the 90 degree day record for this year? I think we’ll end about 21…

  33. Droppin says:

My temperature has risen from 63 at 10pm to 71 now. What is it there Derek?

  34. Derek Hodges says:

I agree Droppin, I have my weather alarm set to wake me up if the wind gets too strong..lol

  35. Derek Hodges says:

  36. Droppin says:

I will be looking forward to the east winds Lol. Just a nice precursor to the big events this late fall/winter πŸ™‚

  37. Derek Hodges says:

heh heh, sounds like fun. I will enjoy it in my east wind exposed neighborhood. Probably gusts 35-45mph in my area.
