80 Degree Day

It wasn’t expected of course, but we finally hit 80 degrees today.  And that was without warm easterly winds!  We could have been 85 with the same atmosphere overhead plus offshore flow.

The big story tonight is the weak looking cold front offshore.  It may be weak, but there is a lot of cold air behind it.  The front should pass through NW Oregon during the daytime tomorrow, bringing a few showers, but no big soaking.  BUT, the double whammy of strong onshore flow plus a much colder airmass arriving by afternoon equals a good 20 degree drop in temperatures.

Even though the air flowing in Saturday afternoon is cold, it’s quite dry, so Sunday we start chilly, but end mild with a mostly sunny day.

A 2nd front moves through Monday for at least partly cloudy skies, but once again pretty dry.  Then it’s on to ridging Tuesday-Thursday or possibly Friday too.  One more round of warm summery weather coming then…Mark

Saturday was weird. I went for my morning run at 7am. By the time I got home at 8am, my thermometer outside said 61! I mowed the lawn, we worked outside, it was great. Then the clouds came in, it got cool, and we even got a little bit if drizzle on us as we finished. I took my shower then went shopping with my son.
When we left (I was in shorts) it was slightly raining and about 63. By the time we got to the first store it was 58 and raining hard. At the 2nd store it was 53 and raining harder! By the time we got home the car temp said 46 outside and it was raining hard. 10 minutes after we were home, the rain lightened up and it started getting warmer.
Within an hour after getting home, the temp had gone up to 53, the rain had stopped and the sun was coming back out. I swear the cosmos was playing a joke on us – I was in shorts, my son and I had no jacket, we were cold and got really wet. Then when we got home it was all done. LOL! At least I got my lawn mowed before it started to rain. Whew!

Maybe some frost Tuesday Morning. Looks likely for most of the areas away from downtown portland so watch for that if you have plants.

Tell you the truth I wouldn’t think a few flakes {A heavy shower regardless if its only a few flakes can indeed accumulate} falling this time of year is that unusual. This was an unusually strong cold front, but if 500mb temps are below freezing, we can have a wet bulb effect and snow can fall. There’s no telling of how usual or unusual it is, a few flakes are never recorded officially, but I’m sure it can happen more often than you think. And there’s no need to be testy, I’m not doubting, simply telling you what you saw was a brief little mixover resultant of the front.

  4. A few flakes doesn’t accumulate slush on my trash can ouside. This was legitimate, and don’t dis-count this happening on April 29th. Probably won’t see it happen for many years.

  5. Derek Hodges says:

thanks..should have been able to pick that up lol. Looks to heat up still next week, a little hot for my taste

    In my Opinion

  7. Derek Hodges says:

This may be dumb but what does IMO mean?? lol

  8. Justin says:

No need to be rude, I never said it didn’t snow. You said a few flakes mixed in dude, there’s a difference. A few flakes are nothing to get excited over IMO, even in April.

  9. Josh"The Snowman" says:

Hey Justin, you need to read more carefully. It DID snow here today.

  10. Justin says:

Its cool, but I personally wouldn’t even hope for straight snow. It was likely just the back edge of the front and the heavy squall, pulling down the coldest of air. It seems weird that it would snow at 39 in April. Just saying I doubt you’ll see anything, i’d think ice pellets or hail would be the only thing frozen falling.

  11. alex says:

in 1971 4/28 the record temp in gresham was 84 yesterday i WAS at that temp but it never went higher so i couldve gotten a record if i hited 85

  12. Josh"The Snowman" says:

I meant legitimate snow falling. I’m not stupid, I know the chances of it sticking are nil. But it’s April 29th! To even see snow in the air is amazing stuff. I even called in to channel 4 news up here and they reported it on the air.

  13. alex says:

its 46.0 here just to tell you guys it will clear out fast and the temp will go down to lower to mid 30s tonight so watch out for patchy frost tonight!!

  14. alex says:

im done with this system theirs all ready sun breaks and if you look at the clouds their moving really really fast the more south you go here the more its clear!!

  15. Justin says:

Well you say legitimate snow and its 39, don’t think that would happen. The chance of seeing a 100% snow shower sticking or not is next to zero.

  16. Derek Hodges says:

You mean April lol. Its like 44 or something here, should check my thermo

  17. Who said anything about sticking? I just think it is cool to see flakes fly on May 29th. Not sure if I have ever seen that here.

  18. max says:

Crazy Oregon weather! Goes to show that almost anything can happen given the right elements.

  19. Justin says:

IMO, even if it were 32 degrees right now the ground is too warm regardless. I mean, it was 81 YESTERDAY. Not a chance any flakes could stick.

  20. Justin says:

Amazing how cold it is, April 29 and 44 degrees right now! Here’s hoping for some cold core t-storms tonight/tomorrow.

  21. Ya, this is pretty impressive. This thing just exploded as it made it inland. Must’ve been some amazingly cold air aloft for this time of year. I want to hear Mark comment on it. Anyone down there spot any flakes too?

  22. Justin says:

Goopd spring soaking here. Temp shot up to 67 at my house, now is a full 20+ degrees colder. Got a 1/4 inch in the rain gauge, high gust to 46mph. Rain is hardest its been so far today here, god its pouring!

  23. Debbie T says:

What a crazy weather day! Earlier this afternoon it was 72 degrees- now it is 48! Wow, when this front came onshore,it certainly stirred things up! Crazy winds and sideways rain, and maybe even a little thunder as my labrador was trying to hide between my legs!

  24. You guys are gonna tell me I’m full of it, but the last rain squall just moved through here in Everett. Dropped the temp to 39 degrees and there was indeed very wet snow flakes mixed in it. Unreal! I verified it by looking at the top of my trash can and there was slush(very minor) on the top of it. I just looked at the calendar and it says tomorrow is May 1st, unbelievable. What’s the temps down there? As cold as me?

  25. alex says:

will anyways weather channel is showing a 88 next thursday that should change to a lower temp like 82-88

  26. alex says:

its just a weak system going in it will end around 4:45-5:00pm and then sunshine, so what we get this all the time and you guys never get this excited whats goin on???

  27. Derek Hodges says:

Got 55+mph gusts bringing down a few branches. Very heavy wind sweeped rain. WOW!!!

  28. lip balm says:

I predicted the 80 degree temp about 2 weeks ago after the last snow at 1000ft. and I said we will have 1 80 degree day before May followed by rain the next day. so hopefully we can get a little precip

  29. lip balm says:

I said we could be in for something like on the 21st I believe. Now its looking like we may be in for what could be much hotter next week. ECMWF was a +14 and it looks like we may be under an easterly flow, maybe 87 or something if it holds.

Good ol oregon rain right now. Moderate – Heavy at times

  33. Dave Lamb says:

81 was the high temp at my house yesterday. This morning’s anticipated weak front is still offshore, and the marine push is relatively weak. Looks like we may have sunshine for awhile today before this weakening front moves in.

  34. Sandi (Wilsonville) says:

We enjoyed your “Inside KPTV” slide show (below viewer pictures). Thanks Mark!
How long did you practice in front of the green board before you were comfortable (or at least looked comfortable) and pointed where you planned to on the weather graphics? It looks like it would be difficult…

  35. Derek Hodges says:

Yeah, 81.2 for my high. Its funny how we first hit 70 only 9 days ago. A little unpleasent during the heat of the day but was nice.
