More Cold Showers

Radar scope (actually there is no scope, but it sounds like I’m on a submarine if I say that) really lit up around 5:00pm today.  Nice line of thunderstorms moved through McMinnville-Newberg corridor, producing 5-8 cloud-ground lightning strikes and heavy rain.  But the strongest cell I’ve seen since last summer developed soon after just west of Forest Grove then moved north across Highways 6 & 26 near Timber.  Lots of strikes and probably hail with that one.  But then it was all over by 6:30pm.

Unstable southerly flow continues tomorrow, and our model here (a WRF model) shows more breaks in the cloud cover for better heating.  That may give us more widespread thunderstorm activity.  Lifted Index is still a nice zero or slightly under.  CAPE on the 00z MM5 from UW is not too impressive, so I doubt it’ll get too wild, but it’s a nice pattern for afternoon spring storms.

By the way, when we do have good storms in the region and a weathercaster is "in the house" (in the weathercenter), keep watching this link:

http://kptv.static.worldnow.com/images/incoming/wximages/web_realtimeradarfloater_big.jpg

we call it the KPTV FLOATER image, it’s just a snapshot of our radar screen.  Of course other times it’ll show absolutely nothing, but always check it out if you know we are here watching storms develop.

this isnt going to last a long time estimate around 15-25 mins or less.

  5. Ryan says:

That band is intensifying now that I go back and look at the radar. Could be the first T-Storm for the Couve.

  6. Ryan says:

It’s 64 and clouding up quick here in Vancouver. It is black to the SE it appears the biggest cell is going to move past the area to the east. That long scraggly cell behind it should sweep over the entire metro.

  7. alex says:

in the past hour their has been 177 strikes last year i remeber last year in the summer 315 strikes in just 1 hour

  8. Derek Hodges says:

I’m going to watch the storm could have up to 1/2inch hail coming.

  16. Derek Hodges says:

The stronger the wind the stronger the outflow is from the storms, which is good for keeping them alive

  17. alex says:

that would be cool if their would be a funnel cloud the wind is picking up is that good or bad???

  18. Derek Hodges says:

We still got a few minutes to wait. I wonder if there will be a funnel cloud.

  19. alex says:

sure hope the radar is right it should be raining here in gresham by now??

  20. Derek Hodges says:

The lightning is a lot more frequent, looks good. Still hoping for some good hail.

  21. alex says:

a little smirk of red coming to pdx

  22. Droppin says:

Gotta love the lightning radio. It always works, is 100% accurate :). Unlike lightning detection which only picks up Cg’s(cloud to ground) discharges, the AM radio picks up everything. Hearing some loud ones now.

  23. Derek Hodges says:

maybe 1/2 inch hail if it intensifies anymore.

  25. alex says:

we really could see pea sized hail!!

  26. Boring Larry says:

now it’s getting real close…looks like i’m right in the path of the smaller of the two cells on the east side…that’s what it looks like on the floater…

  27. Derek Hodges says:

Quite a cell just went through hillsboro, also looks like the east side will get some hail soon, probably me too.

  28. Derek Hodges says:

    Radio pretty active..lol

  29. Boring Larry says:

Here in the hole…getting real dark, and just heard the first thunder of the day!

  30. Hanson says:

I love southerly flow also because sometimes we get hit hard here in longview. It’s something iv’e noticed if its with winter storms or thunderstorms but when good batch of moisture or shower coming from the south it intesifies right over us.

  31. Derek Hodges says:

Guess what, that storm by Eugene is moving toward Portland with lightning and 1/2inch hail, awesome!! lol

  32. Derek Hodges says:

Guess what, that storm by Eugene is moving toward Portland with lightning and 1/2inch hail, awesome!! lol

  33. Derek Hodges says:

We should only be concerned with stuff from Eugene north because the storms tend to form and die and any longer than that and they won’t make it most likely.

  34. Derek Hodges says:

Yeah I wish I had known about the radio sooner, why is the radar so far behind. The strikes are increasing rapidly.

  35. alex says:

on wunderground i checked the radar i have a question is that from calfornia coming to us or staying down in the south??

  36. Droppin says:

Ty for the link Derek. I like that one a bit more than the Vaisala lighting page. Yep they are moving north and I would think could intensify further. I am picking up all of the lightning on AM radio Lol.

  37. Jeff says:

I just got back in from a cold, wet, windy bike ride in the South valley around Junction city. Hail the size of peas, maybe a bit bigger, completely coated everything. I had to take cover on the east side of a garage (blustery west to east winds driving hail). Very painful, storm moving almost due North.
Some lightning and thunder, too. Though I only saw one crisp bolt- several diffuse flashes too.

  38. alex says:

i just looked at the lightning tracker on weatherbug so far 9 strikes near salem!! 🙂

  39. Derek Hodges says:

    How about large hail lol

  40. Derek Hodges says:

Its coming, here this is a bit slow but check out some of the strikes south of here, where our storms are coming from.
