All is well with the world this evening. A solar eclipse and then…the Portland WSR-88D radar is back in operation. I don’t like having spring showers & thunderstorms with my 11 year old friend not working. Good job National Weather Service getting that back up and working ahead of schedule today!
Looks like next upper-trough approaching quickly tonight, taking the "dive-south" route towards California. Showers likely tomorrow, then Friday should be quite a bit more convective as Lifted Index goes to zero or slightly below.
Then a 2nd trough dives in for Monday-Wednesday. Bottom line is active weather some days, slow and gray others, and no stretch of warm 65 degree or warmer weather. We have been spoiled the last 3 years with 2-6 days of 70 degree temps in March. We had none this year.
I have Sunday dry in the 7 Day forecast, but GFS does NOT agree. May need to put showers back in on Thursday night’s broadcast.
BTW when I say not much more intense overall don’t forget today a funnel cloud was spotted, there were numerous lightning strikes, and plenty of hail in spots. Like I said not everybody will see this but I am sure some of us see a good hail shower or a strike of lightning, etc.

The storms themselves may not overall be much more intense but I think everybody will have a better risk of getting one. Not for sure, but likely.
I’m not expecting much more than today, but we’ll see. I’ll occasionally check in and report anything interesting….
Tomorrow still looks good for storms. I’m sure mark will elaborate more but the lifted index will be near -1 and basically everything is in place for storms, even more so than today.
47 here
Where did everybody go?
It shifted so the brunt will miss me totally but I’m still getting pretty heavy rain/wind but I guess I will have to wait for tomorrow for the real storms.
lookin at 52 here
Yeah, I’m out here in Beaverton, looks to be heading right at me…we’ll see what this is made of…may only be a heavy rain/wind band…but I’m hopin for some lightning!
slight change, maybe 50dbz lol
slight change, maybe 50dbz lol
I got one heck of a storm coming, the brunt should go to my west but I’m still looking at 55dbz possibly!!
So the band just south of portland, just now entering sherwood looks to be intensifying on the way north…wonder if there’s any embedded lightning or hail…either way looks like a good douser comin up soon (next 45 minutes or so). Can’t wait for those humid nights with storms rolling off the cascades towards portland…those are some of my fav nights of the year, other than the snowy nights of course!
Excited that band south of longview/kelso (I live in longview). Anyways the clouds to my south are black and there is lightning. i see a cloud light up so yea.
Nothing up here really. Darn it and the sun is going down.
I’m waiting for the next band to hit, looks ok, but not as strong as it was.
No lightning visible with the cell that just came thru, mabye the next one.
Well things continue to develop. The coast range is having very intense storms, looks like the Portland area will probably see some hail out of the band moving northward. Maybe a lightning strike or two as well.
The cell to the west of Hubbard and the one moving possibly toward Portland have hail in them, I sure hope so =>
You may have to wait a very long time for that to happen, you will be lucky to get more than one for a while it appears.
Are we tying or setting the record for the most rainy days in March?
I have 1000 rhubarb and 15,000 asparagus plants, 300 lbs of fava beans and 100 lbs of pea seed to get in the ground. Any idea when I can have THREE dry days in a row? hat’s all I’m asking for, 3 freakin’ dry days.
I don’t know exactly but it looks like its intensifing a bit. Especially that one cell. It says its going northeast but it look to me like its going north. Could get very crazy in a couple hours. There was a funnel cloud in that band afterall lol
There’s a hailstorm east of Corvallis making a beeline north to the Portland area, wonder if it will hold together.
I’m surprised there’s so much activity, didn’t think so much would be related with the initial system. Looks like a cell passed just eastof you Derek, a few more coming towards the metro area and a solid line protruding to the west near the Coast Range.

The sun has been out in earnest up here today, but less in the way of storms. That sucks, hopefully some of that heavier stuff develops before sunset.
Ok one more thing to support the developing activity..

Well its getting more active, I will check out for a little bit because nobody is here but watch for possibly a heavy shower or two and maybe a rumble of thunder.
Hey two strikes of lightning just southeast of me and more developing, thats a surprise with almost no sunlight today. I wonder what will happen in the next couple hours.
Well a few strikes are now occuring on and off shore so possibly some heavier showers this afternoon, I have one about to hit me, but tomorrow still looks like the better bet of some real action. And just so you know its spring break JOSH!!! lol I got nothing to do this week.
Hey Derek, I’m here now. Some of us work for a living…j/k
What’s the word? Anything look better now than this morning as far as tomorrow goes?

Not sure I know what your saying but i am talking about tomorrow this will happen. Even though I do see one strike in Oregon today lol. Just wait one more day.
Hmmmmm, only verified ONE LOL
Derek…..am I missing something??? Are you looking for a different part of Vaisala than the free lightening map??

oops, meant south east of the low
Here is what I am looking at today.
http://www.weather.com/weather/map/USOR0148?name=westcoastussatellite_large_animated&day=1
It looks like the low near the coast is kicking off the small showers today but its too cloudy for anything much to form. Tomorrow it appears as though that low should move into position. Notice how there is clearing forming right to the south west. This should allow for a lot of sunshine and hopefully some good storm buildup by afternoon. I can’t guarantee anything but I would expect some t-storms to pop up tomorrow. The lift index looks to be just below zero as well which is good for t-storms. We will have the southerly flow we need and this system looks cold aloft which should all work together to fire up some storms. BTW where is everybody??
Yeah nothing today. If we get good clearing tomorrow it could really get interesting in the afternoon hours.

Looks like once this front passes through tomorrow we should have some good opportunites again for some thunder. My prediction is tomorrow evening, nothing but light rain today, nothing severe.
You know..if somebody wanted to give me their password and username or whatever you need for vaisala you could do that. lol Thats probably illegal though.
I rely more with what the meteorologists are saying. But then again, they need to have a radar to tell us what will happen. Occasionally I look at a radar for info so it still is important to weather for me.
I agree on that, I’m blind without the radar. lol Hopefully some good action, hail, lightning, etc. I feel pretty good about calling that earlier. Although it would be nice to have just one nice sunny 70 degree day before we go back to run of the mill rain.
