11:30pm Wednesday 11/30 – Not So Alone

Looks like Rod over at KATU and Jeff at KOIN are heading towards no sticking snow, especially Rod.  But KGW is going full speed snowstorm ahead…

I’ll admit I’m nervous…and probably a sleepless night ahead!  But TTD (Troutdale, I’m going to use those identifiers in this blog since lots of you are really weather saavy folks) is now up to 41 degrees and E 17 mph.  That is definitely NOT chilly air pouring out of the Gorge.  I think the only way we could get snow in the morning is an hour or two of very heavy, sustained precip as the east wind dies down.  It’s happened before, but I still don’t think the precip will be heavy enough.

By the way, we tried something new tonight on the newscast.  Actually it was Wayne’s idea.  Take all the other forecasts in town and stack them up.  Very interesting to see other weather folks on my station.  Like a little weather family reunion eh?  Any thoughts on that?  Otherwise it’s home for a short night of sleep.  Mark

Thanks for the good job you do–as several of these have said, KPTV is always my news of choice.
I’ll be the contrarian (as I usually seem to be). Showing the review of other news concerns is OK as long as it is rare. It just seems to add to the confusion and the one-upmanship. What did it really add to our useable knowledge? It just seemed to add to the confusion. In a big weather event like this, it is cute, but not all that informing. Keep up the good work.

I thought this was a great idea, and in what I imagine is kind of a “tight” media market I thought it was a great idea….provided community service and in my opinion elevated you guys above the rest by your “out of the box” thinking….thanks for the idea and going with it!!

I think showing a comparison of the different forecasts is a great idea. Thanks of doing it.

I LOVED the weather compare last night…I stayed up just to watch that segment of the news.
Channel 12 is the news of choice in my home. Morning and Night.
Keep up the good work guys.

    Mark,
I really appreciated your forecast last night…it was an honest and dignified report….not like the other guys that try to hype up the weather needlessly. I especially liked seeing what everyone else was forecasting all in one place.
Thanks..your station is now my primary source for TV weather.
    Cheers!

LOVE this new blog!! I’ve got the RSS feed so I can keep tabs on it during the day. GREAT IDEA! And thanks for the honesty in your forecast. I remember Bosley saying, “Well, the computer models say this. As someone who’s lived here for a long time, I think this is going to happen. But this is Portland so who really knows? All I can give you is my best guess.” I watched him because he was honest, and his gut was right a lot more than the computer models.
I didn’t see the news last night (I was asleep by then), but cool idea to compare each others forecasts. I just saw a national weather service announcement that the warning is now back down to an advisory. Looks like 3 out of 4 weather guru’s were right. 🙂
    Thanks again for the blog!

    Mark,
I did not get to see the new forcast with the other guys in there but I like the idea. You should have a graphic with their names/photos and a follow up the next newscast showing if they were right or wrong. Who knows maybe this will make everyone conscience of what they say and each one of you will give a similar forcast.

    Hello Mark
I really like that you showed the other weather people… It really saves me time because I am the snow person who turns it to each ch for the forcast so you made my life easy ; }… I just wish you would all say what ch 8 is saying LOL… I jsut dont understand why theres a weather warning for snow and at the same time you guys are all saying no snow ??? Keep up the good work..

I hope your wrong about tomorrow. There is nothing prettier than snow in Portland.
I thought that adding in the other forecasts was really nice. It’s iterestingto see all of the different opinions. Thanks

Well I missed your forcast trying to get kids to bed but I love the idea….maybe to add to it grade them on their forcast or something like that. Or a right or wrong check box with their names since you probably cant use their pics. Just a thought.

I was impressed that you guys did the segment on the other stations forcasts. It seems that the media always acts like there the only one doing a story, for the viewers eyes. Like at crime scenes looks like there only reporter at the seen mean while all the other news reporters are just to the left or right of him. I think it took a lot of courage to broadcast that segment, and I was suprised to see it. Seeing a new station talk about other news station on the news, to me, I thought it just wasnt done. I was glad to see it.
