It’s crunch time…we’ll be entering the critical 24 hour period (to get snow in the lowest elevations) soon. Here’s our forecast, which will probably the last one for this event. I think by Thursday evening it’ll all be over as the cold and dry air starts moving in from the north.
Note that I haven’t really changed anything. Still think 1-3″ is most likely for most of us. That leaves either a pitiful 1″ or a lucky 3″. If we don’t get a widespread 1″ across the Metro area, that’ll be considered a BUST to me. Hope for a cluster of heavy showers tonight or tomorrow! This forecast is also for Salem, Vancouver, Astoria, Longview…really any area west of the Cascades at the lowest elevations. A bit more is likely on the hills, but I doubt anyone below 1,500′ would get more than 5″. More like 3-5″.

Kelso washington we have 4 inches and its stil coming down heavy. melisa in kelso
So from my driving around, about 2″ here just 1/2″ in Ilwaco, probably 4-5″ up near Oysterville.
Currently snowing moderately after a heavy graupel shower earlier.
What’s the latest forecast?
Just testing an html photo insert. My 4 year old making do with what snow we had.
Ok…that didn’t work.
I’m guessing we are totally done with snow up here. It’s been very quiet on the radar for about five hours now. I’m above my forecasted high of 35 today, so I guess that means I’m an over achiever
Still plenty of snow to play in, but with it warming up I’m not sure how long it will last.
In 1.5 hours the temp went from 32.1 to 44.3 THIS SUCKS
Thats all folk
Glad that we finally got snow! Mark did a great job on calling the snow and how much we would get. Hopefully we will see a few more snow showers throughout the day.
Sun out, up to 34.5 road just wet
35.1
We went from 32.6 to 32.2 with the sun out! Kinda strange… But anyway the snow is melting some, but it’s still PLENTY white out. We apparently were hit harder then quite a few, we always are it seems. I love it!
Me too!
We have almost three inches at my house. Did you get about that too?
Other thing to note…looking at water vapor imagery…there is a fast moving but weak shortwave in jet a few hundred miles offshore…this may actually interact with the ULL, keeping it from progressing much farther S….hanging up the low somewhere off SW Washington or NW Oregon coast…..perhaps…PERHAPS…we might get a stalled arctic boundary with more snow for someone a bit lucky. We have had more or less steady, light to moderate snow in Eugene for the past 2 hours or so.
Temp currently 32.9…slowly rising….could use a solar eclipse that lasts all day.
It appears that the showers are winding down. Hopefully the sunbreaks will generate some activity. 1/2 inch in Molalla, 34.5 deg
went from 32.1 to 37.1 in a one hour sun break…all the snow melting
now 39.6
Around 4pm outflow from gorge should begin. Being colder, drier air, it will lift whatever less cold, more moist air there is at spreads west and south. I suspect that that the Hillsboro/Forest Grove effect will be in play here as the upslope flow will add to the lift, aiding in precip. Same goes for Dallas area late this evening (around 10pm). Eugene does not get the arctic air until 1 am.
The mesoscale models do not show much if any precip associated with the interface of arctic air and maritime cold air. Common sense suggests we might get an additional 1/2 inch or more from this.
Tillamook has gone from 36 , 37 back down to 32
Just remember, as frustrating as this snow event may be for some; remember this little nugget. Usually, once we get into the cold air, models have a hard time getting rid of it. We get any east wind at all with this new system modeled for Saturday and it COULD be interesting. Need the low to track south of us and induce those east winds…model trend has been to keep moving it south over time.
It looks interesting

New to the blog-thing. How does one insert a pic/or vid into a reply post? Thanks in advance.
You can link pics via a hosting site like: tinypic.com or photobucket.com. Video can be a copy/paste from youtube or vimeo, etc..
jab you’ll want to register at:
http://en.gravatar.com/
then upload your picture there. Most blogs have gravatar avatars enabled, so when you post a comment, it will use that picture on those sites.
oops thought you meant an avatar, mis-read it. But yeah wherever you can host pics like ocpaul said, you can then just link the images’ url here.
Thanks guys! Oh, and Larry in Gresham, I wondered that as well but forgot to ask so I appreciate the heads up on it.
Has been snowing very hard in Mill City and Gates the past two hours. Have close to 5 inches.
Is this IT for snow today?
This “snowstorm” is very much a boom vs. bust scenario that is entirely dependent on location.
you ready for the video ben?!
I don’t know but go for it
In western WA, locations showing precip on radar now line up almost exactly with the 24-hr snowfall projection from the latest NAM… impressive.
Wow snowing pretty hard again.
Been coming down moderately to hard at campus for the last 45 minutes or so
It is deeead here. Even got good parking and everything. :-O
QUESTION FOR ROB:
WHAT TIME DO YOU EXPECT THE “ARTIC FRONT” TO PUSH
THROUGH PORTLAND. AND AT THAT POINT, WILL THERE,
INDEED, BE A “COMPRESSION” EFFECT THAT WILL PRODUCE A
PERIOD OF MODERATE SNOWFALL?
THANKS!
I wish I could answer this, but I am exhausted in no condition to think let alone give analysis or …. yeah think. brain is shutting down:) be back later.
I don’t think I am going to warm up much past 34 today. I am back down to 33.6.
(Forgive possible redundancy, I don’t think my
previous post made it through.)

Please refrain from yelling at Rob.
Hey Rob… did you go out and make your snow boob this morning?!
Take a look at the cameras on TripCheck – looks like snow on the Astoria bridge, plus Seaside and Lincoln City. I also see that temps in the Blue Mtns are in the teens – so some cold air has made it past customs!
12z GFS says -8c over Troutdale and 519 thicknesses early next week. The fun may continue!

I am intrigued.
Interseting
.. And cautiously optimistic.
Sitting on Lake Coeur d’Alene with 15″ of light, powdery snow — w/ high winds and snow drifts everywhere. Very pretty. . . from the comfort of a fireplace.
Kind of funny that PDX gets a bit of blast also! My PDX neighbors say they got about 3″ on the ground. . . .
? You did move to Idaho then? Snowy!
My parents are 4 miles from the ID border in Liberty Lake, WA north of I-90. They have a view of Mt. Spokane, Mica Peak & a beauitful view of the start of the north Idaho mts. I know they got a good snow this am & it’s cold.
At 136th and Mill Plain: 32deg with 2″ on the ground, maybe 2 1/2″ on grass. Melting fast under sun break. It was fun while it lasted.
anything coming in now off the Coast looks pretty weak. Not sure much in store rest of today. We’ll see.
BEN I HAVE A VIDEO FOR YOU SOON!!!
how dare you ben!!!
Hard to believe it’s snowing at the beach in late February. Thanks.
Nice job!
Usually Coast will get nailed first when the storm is coming from the west.. But forecast seems right on!
I enjoy your updates Ben.
We’ve officially had winter! Thought this would be a year where it just wouldn’t be our year, but glad I was wrong! Is there more snow coming today or was that band the last of it?
Yes more is coming as the low drops south. Its gonna be a good day.
Do you think it would be a good idea to drive to portland from Longview today? I wouldn’t be heading back home until three thirty. Im worried about getting caught in tricky conditions. I am the winter driver everyone yells at. Lol.
Had a couple of road reports from hwy 30, guess it’s slow but not really that bad.
